Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

Sunday, August 21, 2005

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.

If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.

There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”

There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

Top 6 Technology Trends That Will Dominate Construction Industry

In the past, construction industry was characterized as a traditional and one that is resistant to change. However, over the last few decades, accelerations in technology has introduced a tremendous transformation in industry. Coming back to the current times, it can be said that construction industry is under a significant paradigm shift.

Let’s take a look at the top 6 emerging technology trends that could transform the construction process.

Drones or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)

Drones, also known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, are no longer only a hobbyist gadget, they are now emerging as widely used technology construction industry. The drone industry is forecasted to grow to %11 billion by 2021.

When deployed in construction sites, they assist with monitoring and inspection bringing the following advantages:

 • Entirely sweep a large project in a matter of few hours gathering the required data rather than collecting the same data in many days or weeks by foot.
 • Easily keep a tap on and monitor viewpoints that are normally inaccessible for humans. This enables drones to detect issues that are hidden from human sight.
 • Improve safety by gathering information and observation that might expose surveyors to injury.

Drone can even achieve significant cost savings by enabling faster supervision with no need of surveyors. With use of drones, construction and engineering companies can supervise multiple projects simultaneously. UAVs can also help with emergency situations like COVID-19 outbreak by limiting the need for personnel.

Advanced drones can be used for collecting information even during harsh weather conditions saving a lot of time.

Augmented Reality (AR)

AR allows a user the ability to visualize the world through a camera lens. Construction industry has started adapting Augmented Reality and is said to revolutionize construction projects in the near future. AR superimposes a computer-generated image and can be fed to VR to replace the real world with the computer-generated image in a simulated environment.

AR systems are capable of displaying key information about the equipment and display warnings for nearby areas at risk. For example, AR lens can detect surfaces that are at high temperature or are electrically charged.

Imagine the power of visualizing the real world with desired elements through a camera lens. A completed project can be overlaid on an empty site or an existing building to enable clients to see the final result even before the project is finished.

Connected Devices

Use of sensors to monitor and manage a building effectively in nothing new. However, managing all the data has been a real challenge in construction projects. Internet of Things (IoT) brings connectivity to all types of devices that are used in construction including equipment, tools and even gears work by personnel. IoT generates abundant data that can used for different purposes like:

 • Live monitoring for activities to improve efficiency and prevent accidents.
 • Tracking the performance of equipment and tools to reveal potential ways for improving overall efficiency.

Connected devices coupled with GPS tracking can benefit greatly especially for monitoring equipment that travel long distance between projects. Project owner can know the exact location of the equipment when equipped with telematics. This enforces efficient fleet management and also prevent theft.

Building Information Modeling (BIM)

BIM when used in construction projects, add detail level ranging from broad geometric representation to an accurate building model. BIM uses a software that not only allows project managers to design the buildings in 3D, but also creates several layers of metadata including the MEP layout of the building which can all be rendered in a collaborative workflow with increased accuracy and efficiency.

BIM is one of the most powerful tools for handling and preventing construction waste at the design stage. BIM can detect component clashes so engineers can make better decisions and efficiently optimize the design.

BIM is estimated to be a game-changer for the construction industry with its ability to depict project development in a highly collaborative environment.

Prefabrication & Modular Buildings

Prefabrication is a process where building modules are manufactured in an off-site manufacturing facility and assembled on the building site when required. Prefabrication has several benefits over the traditional construction process like:

 • Minimizing overall component and equipment waste since the building modules are created in a controlled factory environment.
 • Prefabrication is independent of the outside weather conditions which is one of the biggest hurdles in traditional method with high level of uncertainty.
 • Higher quality can be achieved since there are fewer external factors influencing the project during prefabrication.
 • Potential to cut the overall timeline by up to 50% as compared to that of traditional construction.

Prefabrication & modular construction is highly recommended for construction in emergency situations like COVID-19 since the workforce can be easily monitored and preventive measures can be carried out with ease.

In competitive markets in New York, prefabrication has additional benefits of financial rewards for completing a real estate project early.

Cloud Services & Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Emerging advanced technologies are characterized by generating a large amount of data that is processed and stored. Cloud services not only helps project managers to store a lot of data, but also makes it accessible at any time while maintaining it in a secure remote location. This data can be accessed by connected devices or by any data analysis platform.

Large data volume produced by multiple connected devices is a lot of work for human analysts and often require Artificial Intelligence (AI) to be processed efficiently. AI retrieves the cloud data and processes it into simple and intuitive metrics that help making effective decisions.

The high exposure of risk and uncertainty can be overcome with the help of AI by shifting from a reactive to a proactive approach in risk management. This in turn helps construction companies reduce project costs while improving safety.

I’ll Have Another wins 2012 Preakness Stakes

Monday, May 21, 2012

The placement for first and second place at the 2012 Preakness Stakes could have been a replay of the Kentucky Derby earlier this month as I’ll Have Another came in first with Bodemeister behind in second. In this race, Creative Cause finished third.

By winning the Kentucky Derby and the 137th Preakness Stakes, I’ll Have Another has a chance at winning the US Triple Crown of thoroughbred horse racing. The final race I’ll Have Another would have to win is the Belmont Stakes, which will be held on June 9.

I’ll Have Another was not favored to win the Preakness Stakes and his odds were set at 3-1. Bodemeister, who was the favorite at 2-1 odds, was the speed horse again as he led the field for most of the race just as he did at the Kentucky Derby. This time, Creative Cause was following close behind in second by the time the field of horses reached the far turn. Just as in the Kentucky Derby, I’ll Have Another pushed faster in the final leg of the race. However, the Preakness Stakes finish was closer with I’ll Have Another squeezing by the pacesetter at the very end to win the race in 1:56.9.

Mexican jockey Mario Gutierrez has won his last four races with I’ll Have Another. He gave I’ll Have Another the credit for the finish, “No one put him in this race. He put himself into the race,” he said. Gutierrez said all he had to do was signal to the horse that it was time to challenge Bodemeister and the horse did the rest.

The winning horse is owned by financier J. Paul Reddam and trained by Doug O’Neill.

The Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland was filled with a crowd of 121,309 to watch the Triple Crown hopeful. The last horse to win the Triple Crown was Affirmed in 1978.

2008 Leisure Taiwan launched in Taipei World Trade Center

Saturday, July 19, 2008

This year’s Leisure Taiwan trade show (a.k.a Taiwan Sport Recreation and Leisure Show) started yesterday, with 131 companies participating including sports media companies such as ESPN and VideoLand Television, businesses selling sports equipment and fitness clubs.

There were also a variety of sports being played in the arena built for the trade show. The events included a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, free style shooting, and bicycle test-riding. In addition, conferences discussed issues related to sports and physical education.

A major topic in the trade show was energy-efficiency and, as a result, bicycles and similar sports equipment were being heavily promoted.

Next Tuesday, companies from the electronics industry plan to promote their industry at “2008 Digital E-Park.” In previous years, organizations from the electronics industry have showcased their products at Leisure Taiwan instead of at the Digital E-Park, so this move has reduced the number of markets covered by Leisure Taiwan.

England: Baby born with heart outside body operated on; surviving, three weeks after birth

Friday, December 15, 2017

On Tuesday, parents of baby Vanellope Hope Wilkins and representatives of Glenfield Hospital in Leicester, England reported to the press that Vanellope has survived three weeks after being born with her heart outside her chest, a rare birth defect known as ectopia cordis. She has been operated on three times, initially less than an hour after her birth on November 22, and will need further surgery; doctors believe she is the first baby in the United Kingdom to survive being born with the condition.

Vanellope’s parents, Naomi Findlay and Dean Wilkins, live in Bulwell, Nottinghamshire; Vanellope is Naomi’s third child. They learnt about the defect from a prenatal scan, but opted not to terminate the pregnancy. She was delivered prematurely by caesarian section by 50 people including four teams, placed in a sterile plastic bag and operated on 50 minutes later for the first of three times so far. Frances Bu’Lock, a consultant paediatric cardiologist at Glenfield, noted that unlike some cases of ectopia cordis, she does not have any heart defect or other displaced organs; at nine weeks, part of her stomach also protruded, but by sixteen weeks, only her heart was affected. Dr. Bu’Lock had originally told her parents she had only a “remote” chance of surviving.

Ectopia cordis is very rare and reportedly occurs in fewer than eight of every million babies born alive. It usually leads to a stillbirth when the pregnancy is not terminated, and with the likelihood of other associated congenital defects, plus the risk of infection, Vanellope’s survival is very unusual. Dr. Martin Ward-Platt, a member of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, stated “we wouldn’t expect a case like this to happen in the UK more often than once every five to 10 years.”

Her mother said they called her Vanellope after a character in the Disney film Wreck-It Ralph because she was born with “a glitch”.

Deaths on South African roads at 1215 for December 2005

Thursday, January 5, 2006

According to the South African government’s Department of Transport, the number of fatalities on the country’s roads during December 2005 was 1,215. This is compared with 1,234 the previous year, where the total number of deaths in traffic accidents was 10,530.

Department of Transport spokeswoman, Collen Msibi, stated that 512 of the fatalities were pedestrians, 414 passengers, and 289 drivers. 2005 saw the number of vehicles on South Africa’s roads rise by nearly half a million to just under eight million with 779,000 new drivers adding to the dangers on the country’s roads.

“To deal with this high level of unsafety, traffic authorities will increase the number of patrol vehicles on the road, law enforcement officers and unmarked vehicles to do more spot checks and roadblocks,” Msibi said.

“Our analysis has revealed that most accidents are preceded by offences such as ignoring road signs, driving drunk, speeding, vehicles cutting in front of others, driving defective vehicles and fatigue.”

The road toll in South Africa is similar to that of South Korea, Mexico, Japan and Thailand. However, except for South Korea these countries have significantly larger populations.

The worst country in the world for deaths in road traffic accidents, is currently accepted to be China. Figures released for 2002 reveal that 250,007 people were killed in that year.

The South African government has acknowledged the problem since 2001. At that time they launched their “Arrive Alive” campaign, targeting vehicle condition, driver fitness, speeding and drunk driving.

Colegio Preciosa Sangre, Pichilemu, amidst other Chilean schools celebrate Student’s Day

Saturday, May 15, 2010

On Friday morning, Student’s Day was celebrated in the most schools across Chile. Student’s Day was created in May 11, 1990 by Chile’s Ministry of Education. The same day, the Supreme Decree N° 524 was validated, whereby also authorized the functioning of Student’s Centres in the High Education schools.

At Colegio Preciosa Sangre, Pichilemu celebration started at 8:30 AM local time (1230 UTC). Students, grouped by grade, shared a cup of milk and sandwiches. Competitions and games were originally planned to take place in the school’s yard, but due to adverse weather, these were moved to an old, large room. The school was split into two teams, Roja (red) and Verde (green). The event was organized by Nicole Grez, Carol Piña, and Paola Sepúlveda, amidst others, and the judges included Angélica Miranda and Mother Loreto Fuentes.

The first of the activities was the performance of a Pichileminian metal band, that covered Metallica’s songs. Subsequently, started the games. The first one consisted of the imitation of a well-known musical artist. The Roja alliance prepared the imitation of Ráfaga’s Luna Luna. The Verde alliance performed a sketch with Right Said Fred’s I’m Too Sexy. Both alliances gained points for this activity.

The next activity in the morning was gymkhana, that consisted if three steps for students from first to eight grades of Basic Education:

 1. Put a thread through a needle.
 2. Eat a pear while playing with a basketball ball.
 3. Pump up and burst an inflatable globe.

From the first to fourth grades of High Education:

 1. Take out a coin from a plate full of flour.
 2. Eat a sandwich with hot chilli, and drink a glass of Coke.
 3. Put a thread through two needles. (Between this step and the fourth, they have to chew the same pear).
 4. Pump up and burst two globes.
Results

In the group of 1st to 4th Grade (Basic), 5th to 8th Grade (Basic) and 1st to 4th Grade (High), the Verde team won.

Subsequently, some girls from the Cheer-leading team performed a dance with some teachers from the school. Later, a game of the 3-legs jump took place. It mainly consisted of: samples of well-known songs were played, when they stopped, the pairs had to jump until they reached the microphone, and sing the rest of the song. Three groups of four grades were formed, as in the gymkhana game. Each group had to listen 3 songs.

Results
1st to 4th Grade (Basic)
 1. Mazapán – Una Cuncuna Amarilla : Draw
 2. Américo – Que Levante La Mano : Verde team won
 3. Shakira – Loba : Verde team won
5th to 8th Grade (Basic)
 1. Mazapán – Caballito Blanco : Rojo team won
 2. Sin Bandera – Suelta Mi Mano : Rojo team won
 3. DJ Méndez feat. Crossfire – Lady : Rojo team won
1st to 4th Grade (High)
 1. Los Jaivas – Mira Niñita : Rojo team won
 2. Shakira – Waka Waka (Esto es África) : Draw
 3. Wisin & Yandel – La Minifalda : Draw

Finally it was determined that the Rojo team won this game. The penultimate game took place at 12:05 local time (16:05 UTC), and it consisted of:

 1. First round: collect 15 turnkeys.
 2. Second round: collect 10 clocks.

All of this had to be done in just 30 seconds. In the first round, the Verde team collected 11 turnkeys, and the Rojo team, 10. In the second round, the Verde team collected 6 clocks, while the Rojo team, 7.

The last game was tugar tugar, which consisted of dancing known songs, including The Rickrollerz’s Never Gonna Give You Up, Cosculluela’s Prrum, Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean, Américo’s Te Vas and Chilean cuecas. After some time, the jury took out some pairs. There were six pairs, with a student from each grade. As the game came to a close, only two pairs remained. Finally, the game was won by the verde team.

Angélica Miranda and Mother Loreto Fuentes, both judges, congratulated both teams and gave the total results:

Alliance Points
Roja 8000
Verde 9250

The same Pichileminian metal band that performed at the beginning of the games, played again, as students left the building.

The Student’s Day was celebrated on Wednesday, the 12th in Los Ángeles. The teachers congratulated the students and at once, they enjoyed activities that included artistic acts, deportive activities and certainly, free food, depending on the scholar journey.

In the José Manso de Velasco School, one of the teachers disguised as Américo, and revolutionized the students. In the Liceo Comercial, they elected a Queen. The most popular took place in Sternenkinder, a special school, locally known as NEE (Necesidad Educativa Especial), that enjoyed an event prepared by a local discotheque.

In Valdivia, the Education Seremi (boss) of the Los Ríos Region, Carlos Crot, visited the students of Instituto Superior de Administración y Turismo (INSAT) while they were celebrating their day, on Wednesday, congratulating all the students of the region. The event took place in a room of the establishment. Crot was the Principal of the Institute until just some weeks ago, when he had to leave to become Seremi.

The Student’s Day was celebrated on Thursday 13, in Parral. The Mayor of the city, Israel Urrutia Escobar, managed to take a Savory and Chocapic (both part of Nestle) tent to Parral. Savory’s ice cream were given for free to people that could get in front of the Municipality building.

The activity had been repeated in other communes affected by the February 27 earthquake. Some of them are: Talcahuano, Coronel, Chillán, Talca, Constitución, and some other minor towns. More than five thousand ice creams were given. “I appreciate the companies that have came along to our call. This activity excites us and entertains not just the childs, but their parents. Today is the Student’s day and we wanted to celebrate it properly […],” said Israel Urrutia.

Students from the Santiago Urrutia Benavente School and Pablo Neruda School, ensured this was one of the best activities made in a long time, because they thought it was a fantasy that people could give ice creams to those who want and to play freely.

The Student’s Day was celebrated on Thursday 13 here, too. In many educational establishments of the city, activities were performed to celebrate this day. In Instituto Superior de Comercio, the students enjoyed a dance-tón (bailetón), El Pingüino reported. The Clerk of the Municipality of Punta Arenas, Orlando Estefó, congratulated the students, “by making history every day by day, as the main actors in the educational process.”

Remodeling Considerations What To Consider

Submitted by: Earl Trs Christopher

Considering a move? I love to hear that talk).

You may want to consider remodeling to up the value and freshen up the look of your house and savethe expense of moving to a new home where you would deal with higher taxes, Mello

You should begin simply by contacting a good architect as well as designer to create plans to upgrade the house. They will certainly be sure to ask exactly what you and your family (blank) interested in and exactly how you make use of the home. What kind of sq . ft . add ons thinking of and how extensive you would like the redesign to be. Additionally what sort of funding do you want (blank)? Right after he produces some initial plans, you ought to study all of them or even get your own decorator review them to make sure it truly is what you really are in the market for. Whenever you have never checked out plans and blueprints in the past you had better have help and get in depth details.

Upon agreeing on the blueprint, you can start obtaining submissions from several companies. Probably you will be amazed due to the degree of variation coming from each and every company regarding home improvement charges. Often, what happens is right after the first bids come in, you can expect to go through a process of reducing get hold of prices to a reasonable amount. You really should make contact with your real estate agent to determine the the most dollar amount which a house within your vicinity will be able to resell for. If you live inside a area of $600,000 houses whilst your residence is (blank) (blank) estimated at $600,000, exactly what will a new $200,000 remodel do to the worth of your house? In certain neighborhoods your $200,000 remodel are often sustained by the actual increase in your worth of the house following the home improvement. There is an appraisal terminology often called highest and best use consequently a home is likely to be improved upon in direction of the stage that promises the greatest return. When this relates to a residential property it implies you should not develop a Million dollar property in any $400,000 local area. The optimal use of a house is going to be if a residence is developed which holds up the particular price of the neighborhood.

It is a wise decision to be aware what you can pay for to invest beforehand and present your main builder this number. He could subsequently attempt to get the price within around this value. The tough part of bidding a renovation will be reviewing the particular contractor’s prices for bids. That’s the spot where a company might be less costly than another. Explore precisely what will the company provide and also what will you have a need to source. Receive as precise a listing as you possibly can that include the surface material. For example, if you’re undertaking the bathroom or kitchen area home improvement, exactly what will be the substance on the surface, ceramic tile or granite? Just what model along with standard of lighting fixtures will this particular builder be utilising in addition to will he or she be providing the particular features? Are all the cabinetry custom made and / or prefabricated. You cannot get to detailed with this list since everything you could add will probably be invoiced as increased charges for you. Figure out your bid you will get comes with any finished goods and also just what will you have to perform. Have anything and everything in writing from your contractor. That which is not actually on paper is going to be one more expense to your account.

A first-rate redesign shouldn’t seem like a renovation. It must complement any refurbished customized properties in the community. You shouldn’t save money to jeopardize opportunities with respect to enhanced equity. Because so many people look at the square footage, definitely take advantage of as much sq footage as is practical. By way of example, when you have basement space accessible and / or covered patio which is under roofing, it is usually a less expensive method to add more sq footage. Remodels that focus on superior design will probably market for thousands of dollars beyond remodels involving similar square footage with poor style. Having a decent architect, designer along with building contractors will make maximize style and design. A good cooperative team process in designing permits your remodeler to help keep an eye fixed on your budget allowed, the grade of the job and also the timeliness on the task. Regular get togethers between these people will save you money, develop a connection among them as well as catch issues before they transpire.

Do not forget with this process of home improvement to keep the worth of house in balance as well as achieve the highest and best implementation?
