Honda Civic tops Canada’s list of most stolen cars

Wednesday, November 22, 2006

The 1999 and 2000 year model Honda Civic SiR tops the list of Canada’s most stolen cars.

Consumer popularity also assures the cars will be popular with thieves. Its the second year in a row the Honda SiR has topped the list.

Rick Dubin Vice President of Investigations for the Insurance Bureau of Canada said “The Civics are easy targets.”

Dubin said that once stolen, the cars are most often sold to “chop shops” where thieves completely dismantle the vehicles. The automobile’s individual parts are worth more than the entire car.

The sheer numbers of the cars and their lack of theft deterrent systems make them thieves’ preferred choices.

1999 and 2000 Honda Civics do not come with an electronic immobilizer, however all Hondas from 2001 and onward are equipped with an immobilizer. Immobilizers will be mandatory on all new cars sold beginning September 2007. The devices enable an engine computer to recognize an electronic code in the key. If the code in the key and the engine don’t match exactly, the vehicle can’t be started.

In third place was the 2004 Subaru Impreza, while the 1999 Acura Integra came in fourth, with the 1994 Honda Civic rounding out the top five.

In sixth place, the 1998 Acura Integra, and the 1993 Dodge Shadow completed seventh.

When asked why early model vehicles are selected, he said that, “auto thieves continue to find it easier to steal older vehicles lacking an IBC-approved immobilizer. We’ve seen this trend developing for several years, and these results confirm it.”

Another Honda automobile, the 1996 year model Civic filled eighth place, with the 2000 German Audi TT Quattro in ninth.

The American 1996 Chevrolet/GMC Blazer rounded out the top ten.

None of the above cars had an electronic immobilizer.

Creating A Scrapbook Of Your Baby

By Audrey Okaneko

I think baby scrapbooks are probably the most fun to create. As parents, we want to capture absolutely everything and so we snap photos daily of our babies dressed in every outfit and everywhere we go. This gives us hundreds of possibilities in creating our scrapbook.

My suggestion for the first scrapbook is to keep track of your baby’s age and sort the photos according to age.

Your title page could be ‘The First Twelve Months’. If you create just 2 pages for each month, your scrapbook will have 24 pages of photos plus all the other pages you add.

At the beginning of the album you might want to record some birth information, such as height and weight, name of hospital, name of delivering doctor and date and time of birth. It’s also neat to write how you came to choose the baby’s name. Was the baby named after someone? If so, include a photo of that person.

During those twelve months if you take a photo of the child in the same spot each month, you’ll really be able to see the growth. For example, if the child has a large stuffed animal, put the animal next to the child for each photo. You’ll be amazed at how apparent the child’s growth is.

Something I think is fun is to capture news stories that happened that first month. You can clip headline articles out of the newspaper and copy them onto acid free paper. Capture both local news and world news of what’s happening the day they are brought into this world.

Create a basic family tree for your baby album. If you have photos of you and your spouse, both sets of parents and both sets of grandparents, that is an awesome beginning for your child’s scrapbook.

My kids had to visit the doctor quite often in the beginning. This tapered off as they got older. I always saved the sheets the doctor gave us which recorded their height and weight.

Capture the ‘firsts’. Take photos of the first time eating food, first time sitting up and first time taking a bath. Take photos of holidays and celebrations through out the year.

You’ll find tons of scrapbook supplies available for a baby album, including paper, stickers, diecuts, cutouts and embellishments. You can have so much fun in creating your baby’s first album.

Yahoo releases mobile phone search engine

Tuesday, March 20, 2007

On Monday the second largest Internet search engine Yahoo introduced its new service called oneSearch. The service represents a search system that delivers locally relevant answers for mobile phone users.

The company will first launch its service in the United States and then make it international. OneSearch is to push aside Yahoo’s main competitor Google in the field of mobile Web search.

Marco Boerries, who works as a senior vice president of Yahoo’s Connected Life business unit, said that the company is now working on putting search on every phone that includes a browser.

OneSearch provides several services including: news headlines, images from Yahoo’s Flickr photos site, business listings, local weather and links to other Web sites.

Yahoo’s officials said that the company has already begun offering OneSearch on 85% of existing mobile phones that include Web browsers.

The search results are delivered on a single page and are set in categories. The results are prioritized according to the calculation that Yahoo computers make about a specific information that the customer is trying to make.

The company signed deals with several major mobile phone manufacturers, including: Samsung Electronics Inc., Nokia, Motorola Inc. and LG Electronics Inc.

Yahoo also promised to help advertisers gain phone customers. Because users make their searches on their phones, they can directly reach the advertiser by clicking on a link.

Yahoo’s new service, oneSearch runs sponsored ad which is being linked to Web search results and display advertisements. OneSearch may also run mini-banner ads developed for mobile phone screens.

It might take some time before Yahoo could actually see positive financial results of its product. Nevertheless its developers are quite happy with the result of their work.

US automaker bailout deal fails to pass Senate

Friday, December 12, 2008

A US$14 billion bailout package deal for the “Big Three” United States automakers — Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors — has been rejected in the United States Senate after failing a procedural vote.

The bill was rejected after bipartisan discussions on the bailout broke down when Republican Party leaders insisted that the United Auto Workers (UAW) union agree to increase wage cuts by next year in order to bring their pay into line with those of Japanese automobile companies in the United States. The UAW refused to meet the demands.

The final vote count in the Senate was 52-35, eight short of the 60 needed to pass. Only ten Republicans joined forty Democrats and two independents in voting for the bill. Three Democrats voted with thirty-one Republicans against it.

Senate Majority leader Harry Reid said that he was “terribly disappointed” by the failure of the bill to pass. “I dread looking at Wall Street tomorrow. It’s not going to be a pleasant sight,” Reid said. “Millions of Americans, not only the auto workers but people who sell cars, car dealerships, people who work on cars are going to be directly impacted and affected.”

Republican Senator Bob Corker was also unhappy about the rejection. “We were about three words away from a deal. We solved everything substantively and about three words keep us from reaching a conclusion,” he said.

Some Democrats now want U.S. President Bush to reserve a portion of the $700 billion bailout package earmarked for Wall Street to assist the flagging car industry.

Stock markets worldwide fell dramatically on the news, with Japan’s Nikkei average losing 484.68 points, or 5.6 percent, reaching a level of 8253.87 points. Shares in the auto companies Toyota, Nissan and Honda all dropped by no less than 10 percent apiece. European stocks, such as those in the United Kingdom and Germany, also lost ground, with the FTSE-100 index of leading shares falling 176.3 points to a level of 4,211 at midday.

Sunday, February 15, 2009

A woman who held the Guinness World Record for having the world’s longest fingernails has lost them in a four-car accident in her hometown of Salt Lake City, Utah in the United States.

66-year-old Lee Redmond was seriously injured after she was ejected from the sports utility vehicle (SUV) she had been a passenger in. It had collided with one car, causing it to collide with two other cars on Tuesday February 10. She is expected to make a full recovery.

“[Her nails] were damaged beyond repair,” reported the BBC, quoting Guinness World Records, who also said that Redmond’s nails were “a fundamental part of her life and unique character”. The cause of the crash is not yet known and an investigation is ongoing.

Redmond is credited by the Guinness Book for having a combined fingernail length of 28 feet, the longest on record. She has been growing all eight fingers and two thumbnails since 1979. Her longest of all nails was her right thumb, which was 2ft and eleven inches long.

Before Redmond was named as the record holder in 2006, Shridhar Chillal from India had the longest at a combined length of just over twenty feet.

China has extensive plans for space exploration

Monday, December 19, 2005

China is developing and enacting a long term space program aimed at cultivating and proving the country’s scientific abilities. The project is heavily research based and includes plans extensive manned missions and a modular space station. However the ultimate goal is lunar based.

The Chinese hope to develop its own pollution free fuels that may be used in high capacity rockets that may be able to launch upwards of 25 tons into space. The program has plans for a moon based astronomical telescope and extensive research of the moon’s geology. Ouyang Ziyuan, who heads the moon research program, has explained one particular interest is the helium-3 isotope. Helium-3 is thought to have great capacity for a reliable, non-polluting fuel source.

Their recent Shenzhou 6 mission sent two astronauts into orbit for 5 days. The Shenzhou 7 mission expects to launch three astronauts into space in 2007. Subsequent missions include plans for launching parts of their space station and eventually. The Chinese intend to man their orbiting space station with Shenzhou 10. By 2006 the Chinese hope to launch the Chang’e 1 lunar orbiter which is designed around a Chinese commercial satellite. They intend to follow up with landlers and sample collection as early as 2017.

Started in 1992, the Chinese space program has made rapid progress. Shenzhou 6 was their second manned mission and cost China roughly 110 million, quite inexpensive when compared to the space missions of other countries. The programs extensive plans hint that now, more than ever, the program’s progress is heavily dependent on funding. In 2004 the Chinese budget was 1.8 billion, almost a 30% less than in 1999 and tiny compared to NASA’s spending potential, upped to 16.5 billion for 2006. The space program realizes that it must fit into the country’s grander scheme.

Hu Shixiang, deputy commander in chief of China’s manned space program told CNN that the Chinese are not competing with other countries in their space research, denying any comparison to the Cold War space race. He said China is willing to put for international cooperation in their space research.

Atlas V successfully launches spy satellite

Thursday, March 13, 2008

An Atlas V rocket has successfully launched a classified spy satellite for the United States National Reconnaissance Office (NRO). The satellite, currently known to the public as NRO L-28, or Launch 28, is believed by amateur enthusiasts to be a signals intelligence (SIGINT) spacecraft, known by the codename Trumpet. The Atlas V carrier rocket flew in the 411 configutation, with a 4 metre diameter fairing, one solid rocket motor, and a single-engine Centaur upper stage.

The rocket lifted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Space Launch Complex 3 East (SLC-3E), at 10:02 GMT (03:02 local time) this morning. Today’s flight marks the thirteenth launch of the Atlas V, and the first Atlas V launch from Vandenberg. It is also the tenth orbital launch of 2008. The satellite entered a Molniya orbit, usually used by the NRO for SIGINT and communications satellites.

The launch was conducted by United Launch Alliance, a joint venture between Lockheed Martin, who designed and built the Atlas V, and Boeing, to provide EELV launches for the US Government. ULA president Michael Gass described the launch as “a proud moment in our company’s history”. The launch had been delayed by two years, from early 2006, due to a number of factors.

In addition to its reconnaissance payload, the satellite is carrying two small experiments. SBIRS-HEO 2 and TWINS-B. SBIRS is a test article for a missile detection system, slated to launch late this year or early next, and TWINS is a NASA infrared astronomy experiment. They will remain attached to the satellite for the duration of its mission.

Following the separation of the payload fairing, around five minutes after launch, all information on the launch was withheld, however about an hour into the flight, the launch was confirmed to have been successful. ULA will conduct its next launch on Saturday, when a Delta II will orbit a GPS satellite. The next Atlas launch is scheduled for mid-April, with the ICO G1 communication satellite.

Top 4 Reasons Why The Use Of Colors Is Important In Professional Web Design

By Michael Bryksa

A couple hundred years ago, a poor painter named Van Gogh decided to apply a thick mixture of yellow paint on an empty canvass. The result was nothing like anybody had seen before: Van Gogh captured the essence of the Mediterranean countryside on a piece of paper. Van Gogh was a true genius.

But nowadays you could look at the exact same painting on a computer monitor and see an entirely different picture. Why is that? Because the internet isn’t “color perfect”. A lot of web designers don’t know the first thing about colors on the internet.

Colors can effectively make or break a website, which can make or break your business. If you want to come up with a nice-looking website, you better make sure you know which color fits exactly which section of the website.

Here are 4 reasons why the proper use of colors is essential for any website:

1. Colors express personality

Most of the time you could guess the main subject topic of a website based on the designer’s expert use of colors. For apparel websites, light color combinations are best so they don’t drown out the items up for sale. For websites aimed at young children, bright colors work wonders.

Do you see where I’m getting at? Colors are your website’s best bet at making a good first impression. So work on it.

2. Colors introduce visitors to the site content

Do you remember what happened back then when Google decided to implement a background image on its front page? Hell froze over, that’s what happened.

People liked the plain white background because it cements the purpose of the Google page – a fast, no bullsh*t, and easy to use search engine. The same should be true with your website. Is your color palette complimenting your website or is it distracting from it?

3. Colors set the tone for gender

Men like blue, orange and red. Women prefer yellow and pink. Stuff like this is good to know when you’re designing a website that aims to cater to a specific gender. Imagine for a second shopping for a pair of slick Nike basketball shoes online and you’re greeted with a colorful explosion of orange and pink colors and yellow sunflowers.

4. Colors can set the mood

Colors have meanings.

For example, red is used to denote passion and excitement, and can set off feelings of aggression and even violence. The color orange can come off as informal and joyful. Yellow is the same color as sunshine. It sets off an upbeat feeling of optimism and bright energy. Nature and life is denoted by the color green. Blue as we all know by now is about being calm and cool and in control.

Use these significant associations to influence in some small way how visitors should view your website.

Effective use of colors is essential to any website. Don’t take it for granted and think content is all it matters. Content is king, but it definitely isn’t everything.
