Explosion at earthquake-damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant

Saturday, March 12, 2011

An explosion has been reported at Japan’s stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant after its cooling system was damaged by a massive 8.9 magnitude earthquake that hit off the North-East coast of Japan on Friday. The explosion occurred at around 3:00pm local time (6:00am UTC). According to the plant’s operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company, four workers were injured in the explosion.

The explosion occurred as workers were attempting to cool a reactor by injecting water into its core. Local media are reporting that the plant’s exterior walls have been destroyed and only a skeleton structure remains.

More than 45,000 residents within a 10-kilometre radius of the plant have been evacuated.

Television reports show white smoke coming from the plant. Local authorities are warning residents in the vicinity of the plant to stay indoors, turn off air-conditioners and not to drink tap water. According to Japan’s nuclear agency, radioactive caesium and iodine has been identified at the plant. Authorities speculate that this indicates that containers holding uranium fuel at the site may have ruptured and are leaking.

US stock markets reach 12-year lows

Thursday, March 5, 2009

US stock markets dropped to twelve-year lows on Thursday, amidst falling confidence in the financial sector and worries over whether the US automobile manufacturer General Motors will be able to keep operating.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped by 4.08%, or 280.52 points, at the closing bell, reaching a level of 6595.32, a new 12-year low. The Nasdaq Composite lost 54.15 points, or 4%, to 1299.59, while the Standard & Poor’s 500 plunged by 30.27 points, or 4.25%, closing at 682.60.

Every stock in the Dow Jones, other than Wal-Mart, either lost ground or remained even, and all stocks in the S&P 500 index lost ground.

General Motors’ shares lost 15.5% after the auto firm announced that its auditors had “substantial doubt” over whether it would be able to keep operating.

Shares of financial companies were lower by nine percent, with Bank of America losing 11.7% and Citigroup falling by 9.7%.

“What’s most worrisome is that we haven’t hit the crescendo yet,” said Bill Groeneveld, the head trader for vFinance Investments. “Asset-management divisions are getting calls to just liquidate everything, and we haven’t seen the big players come back in at all.”

“This is one of the worst bear markets in the last 100 years; it started out with the credit crisis and the subprime [loans], but it is like a forest fire that has raced across the clearing and ignited other parts: Autos, auto parts, the insurance companies have been hit very hard. The credit crisis is causing an unraveling of industry after industry because the banks don’t lend,” said David Dreman, the chief investment officer of Dreman Value Management.

European markets were also lower today, with the London’s FTSE index losing 3.2% and the DAX index of Germany falling by five percent.

Life Saving Disaster Package}

Submitted by: Riley Poole

Having 72 hour emergency packs ready for a survival situation or a natural disaster is a great way to prepare your family for these scary events. The kit will contain the necessary items to get your through the initial days after the disaster. This article will discuss some of the important items that should be in the kit.

The first thing you should consider is water. If the power goes out and you rely on a pump for your water you will not have any. Water may also be contaminated and unsafe to drink after the disaster. Your kit should include enough water for your family or it should include a means of water purification. This can be a handheld water filter or iodine tablets that will make the water safe to drink.

The next thing to consider is food. The food you have in your kit should be easy to prepare and not need a lot of utensils to prepare. There is food available that is freeze dried and only needs water to cook. There is a reaction that takes place that warms the food. This is technology that is often used for military meals and is a great item to have in your kit.

72 hour emergency packs should also include some way for you to get news and updated information about the situation. You should be prepared for cell phones to be inoperable so a battery powered radio can be very useful. This can let you know important details like if water is safe to drink, when power will be restored, or if conditions outside are safe.

An important item for the kit you would keep in your car is a blizzard survival bag. This is crucial for cold weather climates. There are many things that could go wrong when you are driving in snowy conditions. Your vehicle could have a mechanical problem, you could go off the road, or you could get stuck in the snow. With poor weather conditions, rescue may take several hours or even days. A blizzard survival bag will keep your body temperature up while you wait for assistance.

Also important is to have a first aid kid. There are many disaster situations where injuries could result. In the chaotic few days after the event, you may not be able to reach emergency assistance and they may not be able to come to you. By having a first aid kit, you will have the items that will get you by until help is available.

Disaster preparedness is important for every family. There are different risks for different areas and determining the potential disasters in your area is crucial to your preparation. After you have prepared an organized kit, you can rest easy knowing that you have taken the steps to keep your family safe.

Preparing your family for potential disasters does not have to be complicated. In addition to providing you with the necessary items for survival, we also have a guide that will help you determine what you need. The guide is very detailed and includes the quantities of the various items that you should have. Our guide will help you prepare a well-organized kit.By preparing ahead of time you will not have to worry about rushing around to get ready or facing stores with empty shelves, you will have everything you need at hand.

Australian researchers confirm stress makes you sick

Wednesday, December 7, 2005

Australian researchers say they have scientifically proven that stress causes sickness. The Garvan Institute in Sydney has discovered that a hormone, known as neuropeptide Y, (NPY) is released into the body during times of stress. Their findings show the hormone can stop the immune system from functioning properly.

Neuropeptide Y is one of those hormones that gets unregulated or released from neurones when stressful situations occur…it’s known for example that it regulates blood pressure and heart rates so your heart rate goes up but it hasn’t been known that it actually can affect immune cells as well,” said Professor Herbert Herzog, one of the researchers.

Herzog feels it is good to finally have proof of something people have suspected for so long.

“Now we have proven without doubt that there is a direct link and that stress can weaken the immune system and that makes you more vulnerable when you for example have a cold or flu and even in the more serious situations such as cancer can be enhanced in these situations,” said Herzog.

The Garvan Institute study centres on two key events that enable the human body to recognise foreign substances and control invaders. When our body encounters a pathogen (bacteria and viruses), the immune cells retain and interrogate suspects. Their activation is made possible by NPY. These cells then return to the lymph nodes, which are found all over the body, with information about the foreign invaders. The lymph nodes are where decisions about defence are made.

“Most of us expect to come down with a cold or other illness when we are under pressure, but until now we have mostly had circumstantial evidence for a link between the brain and the immune system,” said lead Garvan researcher, associate Professor Fabienne Mackay. “During periods of stress, nerves release a lot of NPY and it gets into the bloodstream, where it directly impacts on the cells in the immune system that look out for and destroy pathogens (bacteria and viruses) in the body.”

In the case of bacteria and viruses, TH1 cells are part of the attack team that is sent out on the ‘search and destroy’ mission. But when their job is done they need to be turned ‘off’ and the immune system reset. The same hormone, NPY, that activates the sentry cells now prompts the TH1 cells to slow down and die.

“Under normal conditions, circulating immune cells produce small amounts of NPY, which enables the immune cells on sentry duty and the TH1 immune cells to operate – it’s a yin and yang kind of situation. But too much NPY means that the TH1 attack is prevented despite the foreign invaders being identified – and this is what happens during stress,” added McKay.

The impact of stress on the body has been observed in athletes. Ph. D researcher at the University of Queensland, Luke Spence, together with the Australian Institute of Sport, studied elite and recreational athletes over five months.

They found elite athletes were more susceptible to respiratory diseases under stress.

“A lot of elite athletes put themselves through vast amounts of physical stress in their training, but also their emotional, psychological stress of feeling the pressure of Australia on their shoulders, wanting to compete and wanting to do their best,” said Spence.

It’s not just athletes who are prone to stress. Pressures at work and at home may cause emotional and mental stress that can be equally damaging. Almost a third of all work absenteeism in Australia is due to illness, costing employers over $10 billion a year.

“I think it has a huge impact for the work force and also for employers – if their employees are constantly stressed, constantly under pressure, they are more likely to get sick,” Spence said.

Further research could lead to the development of new drugs which may inhibit the action of the neuropeptide Y hormone.

Herzog warns people to minimise stress before it becomes a problem.

“Relaxation methods like yoga will help you to prevent that but there will still be people out there that are not responding to that and treatment by interfering with the system will be important,” he said. “There’s obviously some time until such a treatment will be available but this is something we will definitely work towards.”

The Garvan research will be published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, Volume 202, No. 11.

Considering Elderly Care Facilities

byAlma Abell

When you start to consider where you will be spending your golden years, you will probably look at some of the retirement communities nearby. These elderly care facilities specialize in providing a home like environment for people who can no longer live on their own. Even though these communities do provide a homey atmosphere, it is very different from the resident’s own home in some ways. Some of the major advantages of such facilities is that the resident will be able to have supportive care anytime that they need it, and that the resident will be able to have companionship anytime that they desire. People who are living on their own, especially when elderly, have the distinct disadvantage of having nobody there around the clock in case something were to happen, such as sudden injury that that they need to get help for.

The type of amenities and features that you seek in a retirement home are really up to your own preference, however some particular features are very advantageous no matter what community you end up choosing. Communities such as silvercrestdeercreek.com offer different levels of services depending upon what the resident needs and wants, but some of the services that are available to all residents would include those such as three meals per day in a comfortable dining area, daily housekeeping service, planned activities for both individuals and groups, and an exercise center on the facility site.

Another particularly attractive feature for elderly care facilities involves transportation. Many of the residents of an elderly care facility have to give up driving by the time they enter the community, but that certainly does not mean that they no longer have the desire to get out and about. Some of the best retirement communities provide transportation to local grocery stores, malls, and even to the doctor or other medical appointments that their residents have scheduled.

When you are choosing the retirement facility where you, your parents, or your grand parents will be spending the next several years of their lives, take your time to really consider what your wants and needs are. Be sure to take a tour of the facility so you can see all of the features and amenities in person.

Toyota poised to recall 270,000 Prius vehicles

Friday, February 5, 2010

Japan’s Nikkei newspaper reported that Toyota is poised to recall 270 thousand gas-and-electric Prius vehicles (model ZVW30) sold in the US and Japan between May and December 2009, due to a flaw in the car’s anti-lock braking system.

Takayuki Fujimoto, a transport ministry official, said the government has yet to receive a recall notice from Toyota. “Nothing has been decided on whether we will recall or not”, he stated. Toyota cannot announce a recall in Japan until it notifies the ministry, but said it was currently discussing how to deal with the issue with Japan’s transport ministry and U.S. safety authorities.

Toyota has faced a US lawsuit alleging it covered up safety problems. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched a formal investigation into the braking problems on Thursday after 124 complaints from consumers.

Since May 2009, two hundred thousand new Prius cars (model ZVW30) have been sold in Japan and another 103,200 in the United States.

Robotic Surgery For Gynecologic Cancer}

Robotic Surgery for Gynecologic Cancer

by

Vishnu Agarwal

Robotic Surgery in is a major surgical procedure performed in a minimally invasive fashion. It involves medical devices that allow surgeons to operate through tiny incisions, using enhanced imagery and incredibly precise movements. Robotic-assisted surgery offers improved, magnified visualization in high-definition 3D. Surgeons are able to precisely control the surgical instruments because they offer seven degrees of free motion (like a wrist).

While the benefits of this cutting-edge technology are great, one thing remains unchanged: the experience of the surgeon is crucial to the success of the procedure, particularly when it comes to more-complex surgeries, such as those involving cancer.

Most of the Uterus Cancer patients require major surgery that includes a hysterectomy and a lymph node dissection, which is required for staging. Some women need a radical hysterectomy, a more aggressive form of hysterectomy used in the treatment of Cervical Cancer. Most of these major procedures have been performed through a large incision in the abdomen, but Robotic Surgery is now a viable and much less invasive option.

Endometrial or Uterine Cancer is the most common Gynaecologic malignancy. In our experience the great majority of these patients are eligible for Robotic Surgery. Many of these patients would benefit from Robotic Surgery because it’s much less invasive and provides many advantages over open surgery.

Robotic Surgery can offer patients significant benefits compared with traditional open surgery:

1Less pain

2Less blood loss

3Less scarring

4Shorter recovery time

5A faster return to normal daily activities

In our experience patients have a decreased length of hospital stay, less postoperative pain, and an overall lower risk of complications that are more common with open surgeries, such as wound infection, bowel function issues, and the need for a blood transfusion. Most patients return to full function earlier than with open surgery / laparotomy.

Although Robotic Surgery has been found to minimize complications and improve outcomes for many patients, the surgery is still a major procedure and complications are possible. Patients should discuss all

the options and potential side effects with their physicians.

Most patients with apparent early-stage disease will be potential candidates for Robotic-assisted Surgery. Some patients with very large Ovarian tumors or advanced-stage disease that requires a large incision to remove the tumors are usually not good candidates for Robotic or other Minimally Invasive Surgery.

Prior to the advent of Robotics, Laparoscopic Surgery was utilized as a minimally invasive option for Gynaecologic surgery. With Robotics, the Surgeon is able to control the camera and the surgical and retraction instruments, which offers an increased level of control over the procedure compared with Laparoscopy. Other limitations of Laparoscopic surgery include a limited field of vision, counterintuitive motion, limited degrees of freedom of surgical instruments, and suboptimal ergonomics for the surgeon. Surgeons have been slow to adopt its use in major Gynaecologic procedures due to these limitations and the long and complicated learning curve.

Patients undergoing open surgery or Laparotomy for Cervical and endometrial cancer have a higher incidence of post-operative complications, including wound infections, Bowel function issues, and Blood transfusions. In open versus Robotic Surgeries, the need for pain medications may be more, the hospital stay may be longer, and a patient’s return to full function may take weeks.
