Black vulture population targeted for reduction at Virginia boat launch

Monday, December 19, 2005

A Virginia recreation and fishing boat launch on the James River near the Dominion Virginia Power plant at Dutch Gap is the scene of too many Black Vultures, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Virginia Department of Inland Game and Fisheries.

In 2002, more than 350 Black vultures were killed at Dutch Gap in an effort to reduce their numbers to a level of a couple dozen birds. But they made a quick come back in the area, and during this past week a hundred of the birds have been disposed of by a shot to their head with a pellet gun.

The USDA reports that both Black Vultures (Coragyps atratus), along with their close relatives called the Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura), are experiencing population increases stretching well over the last 10 years.

The species is increasingly a problem by growing into being a nuisance, as well as a threat to health and safety concerns. The presence of the birds in large numbers, at places they roost, can cause damage to property as they peck and claw at construction surfaces, and cause unsanitary human health conditions from the defecation and regurgitation of the birds. Their presense at landfills, often in near proximity to airports, is a problem for airplanes during take-off and landing.

At the entrance to the Dutch Gap boat launch parking lot, a large yellow warning sign is posted that reads: “Please be aware of possible damage to vehicles and trailers due to the large Black Vulture population currently inhabiting this parking area. Because the Black Vulture is a federally protected species, Chesterfield County is working with the U.S. Deptartment of Agriculture and the Virginia Department of Inland Games and Fisheries to resolve the problem. You can help by disposing of all litter (even non-food items such as cigarette butts) in trash barrels. Thank you for your cooperation.” The vultures reportedly perch on vehicles and scratch the paint, and for some reason are going after windshield wiper blades.

Vultures have shown an ability to adapt to residential and business settings. The bird, with a 4-foot adult wing span, can be seen gliding through the air at virtually any time of day in Chesterfield and Prince George counties in central Virginia.

Tanker truck fire causes collapse on Oakland Freeway

Sunday, April 29, 2007

A tanker truck carrying approximately 8,600 gallons of unleaded gasoline caught on fire on the Interstate 80/880 interchange in Oakland, California early Sunday morning around 3:40 AM. The fire resulted in the collapse of at least two sections of bridges at the interchange, including one carrying I-580. The multi-level freeway interchange known as the MacArthur Maze connects the Bay Bridge (Interstate 80) to Interstates 580, 880, and 980 and California State Highway 24, and as such it connects several major cities in California, including San Francisco, Oakland, and Berkeley.

The driver, James Mosqueda, 51, of Woodland, California, escaped from his truck before the fire. He was the only person reported to be hurt, suffering second-degree burns. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The driver was believed to be speeding, resulting in a loss of control of the truck, causing it to flip over and subsequently burst into flames. As the truck was traveling on the interchange of I-80 eastbound to I-880 southbound near the San Francisco Bay Bridge, it is speculated to have hit a guard rail or column during a turn. Shortly thereafter, it exploded into a fire that lasted several hours.

Caltrans officials have announced that repairs will be fast-tracked, but will still take several weeks. Public transit has responded with plans to increase service and re-route buses that used the destroyed interchange.

Gov. Schwarzenegger has declared a state of emergency that in addition to expediting repairs will suspend restrictions on truck traffic hours and provide free use of area public transportation on Monday, April 30.

Borussia Dortmund captain Mats Hummels to join rivals Bayern Munich

Wednesday, May 11, 2016

In a deal announced yesterday, German association football defender Mats Hummels, the current captain of Borussia Dortmund (BVB), agreed to sign a five-year contract with his boyhood club — and arch rivals of Dortmund — Bayern Munich next season. The arrangement was conditional on Hummels undergoing medical tests before signing.

Mats is one of the best centre-backs in the world. With him we will increase the quality in our team even further.

Hummels previously spent twelve years with the Bavarians, Bayern Munich, coming from their youth system. He moved to Dortmund in 2007 after appearing that year in one Bundesliga match for Bayern.

With BVB, center back Hummels won two Bundesliga titles, one DFB-Pokal Cup in 2012 when they won the domestic double under Jürgen Klopp; and a silver medal in the 2013 UEFA Champions League. He also won the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

“Mats is one of the best centre-backs in the world”, said Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, chairman of FC Bayern München AG. “With him we will increase the quality in our team even further.” Dortmund’s CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke said Hummels had “always been open and fair towards” them.

Hummels is to join Bayern side on July 1 — one year before his pre-existing contract expires with BVB. Dortmund’s website quoted Hummels saying “the decision was not easy for me after eight and a half successful years with BVB. I have always been proud and am still proud to wear the BVB jersey and to be part of this extraordinary team.”

Dortmund is to face Bayern Munich in DFB-Pokal Cup this month. After joining Bayern, Hummels would share the dressing room with his former Dortmund teammates Robert Lewandowski and Mario Götze.

An Accident Attorney In Arlington, Tx Requires No Out Of Pocket Fees

byAlma Abell

After an accident that involves injuries has occurred, it’s important to speak to an attorney. The first concern for many victims is the amount of money they will have to spend for legal representation. An accident attorney in Arlington, TX does not charge a victim any out-of-pocket expenses to represent them against the insurance company. They work on a contingency fee basis, which means the victim pays nothing unless the attorney receives a settlement. The attorney’s main goal gives a victim the representation they need and protect their rights. A personal injury attorney can represent victims of automobile, trucking, or motorcycle accidents.

It is very important to say as little as possible to the police or the insurance company after an accident. Texas has shared fault rules pertaining to personal injury cases. If an injured person is more than 50% responsible for the accident, they will not be eligible to receive any compensation. Insurance companies make every attempt to blame an injured victim for as much fault as possible to reduce the compensation they’re responsible for paying. If an injured victim is awarded a $20,000 settlement and is 10% responsible for the accident, their claim will be reduced by $2,000. This is why it’s so important to hire an accident attorney in Arlington, TX.

The statute of limitation for personal injury cases in Texas is two years from the date of the injury. This means a lawsuit must be filed or the case will not be heard by the court, and any opportunity for compensation will be lost. If the accident involved the potential liability of a government entity, a case must be filed within six months of the accident. Victims are eligible to receive compensation for medical bills, pain and suffering, lost wages, and emotional distress.

The most important thing to do after you’ve been victim of another person’s negligence is to contact a personal injury attorney immediately. They are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and can meet you at your home, work, or medical facility. Receive the legal guidance you need during this difficult time. Two women in North Carolina arrested for allegedly using Family Dollar variety store as marijuana ring

Tuesday, March 17, 2009

Police in La Grange, North Carolina have arrested two women after they received a tip that the Family Dollar store was being used as part of a marijuana ring. Pending an investigation, police shut the store down.

Belinda Pearson, 46, the store manager and her associate Melissa Collie, 40, were arrested when police found 23 pounds of the drug inside the store. Earlier in the week, police said the anonymous tipster stated that a delivery of two packages of the drug was made. After a week of investigating, police arrested both women on March 14 and charged them with drug trafficking. Both were freed after making bail and were scheduled to be in court on March 15.

“The marijuana has a street value of approximately US$35,000. It was about the only thing in the store you couldn’t buy for $1,” said Chris Hill, a major from the Lenoir County Sheriff. He said the whole operation lasted a week.

Owners of the store are said to be on the way to the location where they will take over the store’s management. Family Dollar is a United States chain that sells a variety of things from food items, clothes and housewares. Most items in the store cost less than $10.00. There are almost 6,600 stores across the U.S.

Scientists say study proves chimps create termite gathering tools

Wednesday, March 4, 2009

Researchers say that a study of chimpanzees in the Republic of the Congo in Africa, show that they specifically create and design tools to catch termites living underground. The study was performed in the Nouabale-Ndoki National Park in the Congo in an area known as the Goualougo Triangle. The study was published in the Royal Society journal Biology Letters.

Dr. Crickette Sanz, the leader of the team who filmed the chimps crafting “fishing rod” type tools, says that they have “invented” ways of “improving their termite-fishing technique” by using a stick from a plant called the Marantaceae. They pick off the leaves and then create and place a brush like object on the end. Doing so improved the number of termites they catch, by more than 10 times.

“They then pulled the herb stems through their teeth, which were partially closed, to make the brush and they also attended to the brush by sometimes pulling apart the fibres to make them better at gathering the termites,” stated Sanz to the BBC.

Researchers are aware that chimps have used similar methods in the past, but it was not fully known if the tools they used were designed specifically for the task of gathering the insects. Of all the tools the chimps left behind and recovered by Sanz’s team, 80% were custom made by their owners. Sanz says the new study has determined that their methods have since evolved, proving previous hypotheses.

“Our results indicate that chimpanzees have a mental template of the tool form, which is employed in crafting the tool prior to use and refining it during use,” Sanz said.

Sanz also says that because of Africa’s vastness, much of it is still unstudied leaving him to suggest other species of chimps and apes use complex tools to gather food.

“Just as we are learning about these exciting new complex tool behaviours, the chimps that are showing us these behaviours are under danger from logging, poaching and Ebola,” added Sanz. The triangle is a host to a variety of endangered or threatened animals including gorillas and elephants.

Facts Of The Statute Of Limitations On Debt In California

By Sean A. Kelly

Statute of limitations on debt in California would mean the time period applicable within which a creditor would be able to sue a debtor in the state of California for default on the debt. Once the statute of limitations expires, the creditor would not be able to file a suit against the defaulting debtor to recover losses. Depending upon the type of credit agreement reached between the creditor and debtor, the statute of limitations time period would vary. Under the laws laid down in the state of California with regards to the statute of limitations applicable, any oral agreement, promissory note, written agreement and open accounts and bankruptcy have various statutory time periods. The time period for promissory notes such as mortgage, refinance etc. and open accounts such as credit cards, store cards etc. would be four years. In case of oral agreements where the agreement between the creditor and the debtor might be made orally would be two years and for bankruptcy it would be 10 years. The law states that in case of expiry of the said time period, the debt would become non-collectible and the debtor would not be liable to pay.

According to the Statute of limitations on debt in California, the time duration from which the statute would begin would be the date of last payment or last transaction on the account. Hence when an account goes into delinquency and the debtor does not pay, the same would be reported in the debtor’s credit report. It would be beneficial to remember that a debt would remain to be reported as such till the debt gets paid in full. The only benefit for the application of statute of limitations would be, to give respite to the debtor in case the debtor does not pay within the time frame. After the statute time lapses, the debtor cannot be sued in a court of law.

It might stand one in benefit to understand that when one might be contacted near the end of the statute of limitations on debt, even a verbal acceptance of the debt would reset the time period of the statute and the creditor would now be legally right to sue the debtor. It might be better not to accept that any debt remains payable. The calls that might be received nearing the end of the statute of limitations time might be made by the debt collection agencies which might have bought the debt for very little amount from the actual creditor and might be out to collect the monies. Stating that the statute of limitations has ended when contacted by the collection agent and claiming no pending debts might be useful as the debtor would not be able to sue.

Since the debt does not get erased from one’s credit report and might hamper one’s credit scoring, it might be better to approach a debt help company which might be experienced in handling debt that might be very high for the debtor to pay. A debt relief company might help by negotiating with the creditor on the debtor’s behalf and might be successful in settling the debt payment by more than half. The credit report of the debtor might be affected for the next two to four years. However, at the end of the debt settlement program, one would have a cleaner credit report. The advantage of using debt relief might be that all of one’s unmanageable debts might get settled and one might have more cash in hand to start their financial life on a cleaner slate. It would therefore be beneficial to shop around for debt settlement companies with a credible and reliable track record to employ for handling one’s debt problems.
