An interview with gossip columnist Michael Musto on the art of celebrity journalism

Sunday, October 7, 2007

There are two things one can expect on a trip to see Michael Musto at the offices of the Village Voice: a 20-minute round-trip wait for the elevator and rapid fire answers from one of the most recognizable gossip columnists in the United States. Musto, in addition to his appearances on Countdown with Keith Olbermann and the E! network, has been writing his column for the Voice since 1984. He has recently compiled the best of them in a book released this year titled, La Dolce Musto: Writings by the World’s Most Outrageous Columnist. He was Carrie Bradshaw, replete with a prodigious use of puns, before Sex in the City was a thought. His column is a romp through his life, spats and opinions on socio-political issues. As David Thigpen of the Chicago Tribune wrote, Musto is “a funny and caustic satirist who masquerades as a gossip and nightlife columnist.”

Musto, a Columbia University graduate, is a rarity in today’s celebrity world: he is accessible. He often corresponds with his readers and his public functions are a mix of parties, nightclubs, academic lectures, university panels and film premieres.

He is friendly and frank, and he welcomes people to join him in his world (“I just got a message that Michael Lucas died!” he says staring wide-eyed at his phone; the message turned out to be false). Wikinews reporter David Shankbone spoke with Musto about his life and his relationship to the world of celebrity journalism. And he did not hold back.

Rejuvenating Aging And Damaged Teeth With An Experienced Cosmetic Dentist

byAlma Abell

No matter your age, having a glowing smile can make you look years younger. The things we do everyday, however, really take a toll on our teeth. The foods we eat, biting our nails, or even grinding our teeth during the night can wear out the tooth enamel. Once the enamel is gone, it cannot be restored without professional intervention. If your teeth are starting to show their age, an Experienced Cosmetic Dentist can help. They have the tools, techniques, and training to rejuvenate any smile.

Grinding and chewing can wear down teeth over time. Eventually, these teeth become noticeably shorter, causing the face to look older. Instead of living with worn down teeth, consider having porcelain veneers or crowns cemented on them. Veneers are very thin sheets of porcelain that are permanently glued on the front side of each individual tooth. They come in a variety of shades to match any tooth color. Veneers can be made longer to help lengthen your smile. Since they are only as thick as a contact lens, very little tooth material is removed before they are cemented in place. The entire procedure only requires a couple of office visits to complete, and your smile will look picture perfect.

For teeth that are more damaged due to injury or decay, crowns may be the best option. Just like veneers, crowns are a permanent solution to worn out teeth. An Experienced Cosmetic Dentist can help you decide which option is best for your situation. Each crown is designed to fit completely over the tooth. To prepare the tooth, it must be ground down to a small stump. The crown is then cemented over top of the remaining tooth material. Since each crown must be custom fitted and prepared in a lab, it may take several office visits to complete. Once in place, a crown will look and act like a regular tooth.

If you want a smile makeover, consider covering your damaged or discolored teeth with either veneers or crowns. Make an appointment with Joseph A. Schell DDS SC to see which procedure will give you the smile of your dreams. Thanks to cosmetic dentistry, there is no reason to live with aging teeth.

UN claims over a quarter million human trafficking victims in EU

Sunday, October 18, 2009

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) claims there could be nearly 270,000 victims of human trafficking in the European Union (EU) — over thirty times the last estimate from 2006. The UN’s figures in the Trafficking in Persons; Analysis on Europe report highlights this and, taking advantage of European Anti-Trafficking Day, they are calling for greater efforts to combat the illegal trade.

Today’s announcement aims to bring awareness to the plight of victims, often forced to work illegally in prostitution or labour jobs after being smuggled across borders. Antonio Maria Costa, UNODC executive director, highlighted that few human traffickers are caught, blaming police for not acting sufficiently.

In the six years since the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children came into force, the majority of EU countries have taken measures to criminalise trafficking both for sexual exploitation and forced labour.

Costa highlighted that around one in 100,000 people were convicted for human trafficking in Europe, noting that this figure was less than “for rare crimes like kidnapping.” Only 9,000 victims were reported in 2006.

“Perhaps police are not finding the traffickers and victims because they are not looking for them,” said Costa.

UNODC asserts the majority of victims are women, forced into prostitution; men are forced to work on building sites or farms, and ten percent of the victims of human trafficking in Europe are children, up from four percent in 2003.

“Lives should not be for sale or for rent on a continent that prohibits slavery and forced labour, and prides itself on upholding human dignity”, Costa asserts.

Cars big winner as 34th Annual Annie Awards handed out

Monday, February 12, 2007

Cars drove home the big prize last night, from the 34th Annual Annie Awards. The animation industry’s highest honor, ASIFA-Hollywood’s Annies recognise contributions to animation, writing, directing, storyboarding, voice acting, composing, and much more.

As mentioned, Pixar took home the big prize last night, after facing stiff competition from four other Happy Feet, Monster House, Open Season, and Over the Hedge.

But the biggest winner of the night didn’t get a “Best Animated Feature” nod at all. Flushed Away won five feature animation categories including Animated Effects (Scott Cegielski), Character Animation (Gabe Hordos), Production Design (Pierre-Olivier Vincent), Voice Acting (Sir Ian McKellan as Toad), Writing (Dick Clement, Ian La Frenais, Chris Lloyd, Joe Keenan, and Will Davies).

Over The Hedge won awards for Directing (Tim Johnson and Karey Kirkpatrick), Storyboarding (Gary Graham), and Character Design (Nicolas Marlet).

Of little surprise, Randy Newman won an Annie for Cars in the “Music in an Animated Feature Production” category. Newman has won many Oscars for his movie music, and has a nomination this year for the song “Our Town“. Newman didn’t attend the Annies, instead picking up a Grammy for “Best Song Written For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media”.

DisneyToon Studios’ Bambi II won “Best Home Entertainment Production”, while “Best Animated Short Subject” went to Blue Sky Studios’ No Time For Nuts, which is based on Ice Age.

“Best Animated Video Game” went to Flushed Away The Game, while a United Airlines ad named “Dragon” won a “Best Animated Television Commercial” Annie for DUCK Studios.

How To Double The Effectiveness Of A Treadmill Workout}

How to Double the Effectiveness of a Treadmill Workout

by

Fitness EquipmentYour treadmill workout will only be as effective as you make it. If you keep your run slow and stately, you’ll see limited progress. Those who never push themselves on the treadmill will burn fat very slowly, and they’ll never really get the results they want. Here are a few simple tips to help you max out the effectiveness of your treadmill workout:

Do sprint training — Sprint training is simple: 30 seconds of full-speed sprinting, followed by 60 to 90 seconds of low-speed jogging. It’s more than just an epic cardio equipment workout, but it also helps to build lower body muscle. Throw in at least one day of sprint training per week to max out your workouts! With just 20 minutes, you’ll burn more calories than you would with 45 minutes of jogging.

Adjust the speed and incline — There are days when a slow, serene jog works, but on other days, you have to throw in some hill work or fast-paced running. The faster or steeper your run, the more you’ll push your body to its limits. Most treadmills come with pre-set programs you can use to increase the intensity of your run.

Run with weights — This is not recommended for extended periods, but it can be good for short-term training. Hold a pair of light dumbbells in your hands for 2 to 3 minutes as you run, and you’ll give your biceps and forearms a great workout. Wear ankle weights, and you’ll push your legs hard. The added weight increases the intensity of your workout!

Don’t just walk forward — To really make the most of the treadmill, try walking or jogging backwards or shuffling from side to side. This will give you an awesome leg workout, test your coordination, and force your body fitness equipment to work harder. You don’t need to set a fast pace, but switch things up to work your hips, knees, and ankles effectively.

Tackle more hills — If you enjoy low intensity, steady state jogs, you can make your long-distance jog harder by adding a few inclines. It will challenge your leg muscles and push your cardiovascular system, but it won’t place extra strain on your knees and calf muscles.

Speed up — For those who have grown accustomed to a steady pace, perhaps it’s time to pick up the speed a bit. You don’t have to do a full-on run or sprint, but jog a bit faster. Change your speed from 4.5 to 4.8 or 5.0. It will help you to burn more calories in less time, and it will push your cardiovascular system beyond its current limitations. You’ll fatigue more quickly at first, but the efforts will pay off in the long run.

Get out — Treadmill runs can be enjoyable, but it’s always best to mix things up on occasion. Get off the treadmill service and out of the gym equipment to run in the great outdoors. Find a park, a trail, or a street route to run. It will encourage you that you’re making good progress on your treadmill runs, and it can give you a nice change of scenery and pace.

Follow this advice, and you’ll make your treadmill workouts WAY more effective!

Caroline Kennedy drops bid for New York Senate seat

Thursday, January 22, 2009

Caroline Kennedy, considered to be among the front-runners for the United States Senate seat vacated by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, yesterday withdrew her name from consideration for the seat. New York state Governor David Paterson had been reported as intending to name her as Clinton’s replacement this Saturday.

Caroline Kennedy, the only surviving child of former U.S. President John F. Kennedy, issued a statement at midnight saying she had quit her bid because of “personal reasons”.

A close associate of Kennedy, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, said that the decision was not related to the recent health issues of Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA), Caroline Kennedy’s uncle. The senator suffered a seizure Tuesday while attending a luncheon with the newly inaugurated U.S. President Barack Obama in the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.. He was rushed out of the event in a wheelchair and taken for treatment to Washington Hospital, where he remains. In May 2008 he was diagnosed with brain cancer, which required an operation.

The New York Post has reported that Kennedy withdrew her bid because Paterson was not going to choose her for the position. Citing the anonymous source, the Post said that “her poor performances in media interviews and in private sessions with various officials” is Paterson’s reason for not appointing her to the position. Paterson will reportedly make his decision by Saturday, January 26.

New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo is the highest-profile candidate still up for consideration for the last two years of Clinton’s term. Cuomo, who has not commented on this recent turn of events, was the housing secretary during former President Bill Clinton‘s time in office, and in his current role as attorney general has overseen nation-wide reforms for student loans and participated in limiting Wall Street corporate spending.

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/LA-ND

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to move into Kensington Palace, London

Tuesday, June 7, 2011

British media has reported that Prince William and his recently wedded wife, Kate, are to move their London residence into Kensington Palace, close to Hyde Park.

Two units in the Palace, labeled Apartments 8 and 9, were previously occupied by Prince Charles and Diana, William’s parents, when they married in 1981. Prince William and his brother Prince Harry went to nursery and school nearby. Diana also lived in Kensington Palace after her separation and divorce from Prince Charles.

However, the newlyweds will not live in Apartments 8 and 9, as they are currently being used as office space. They will instead live in a small apartment that was previously occupied by staff. The palace has undergone some renovations, including asbestos removal.

The couple is also set to choose one “housekeeper-dresser”, who will provide valet service for the Duchess of Cambridge. Kate will continue to buy her own clothes, and the new servant is not to be seen as a “stylist”. The position has been advertised internally within Buckingham Palace.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expected to move within a few weeks, before they leave on a trip to Canada and the United States. The London residence is expected to be used only as a starter home for about a year. The couple will keep their permanent residence without personal staff in Anglesey, Wales, where William serves on the Royal Air Force as a search-and-rescue pilot. They will continue to run their Household Office at St James’s Palace.
