Ex-UN official says Pakistan disrupted talks with Taliban

Sunday, March 21, 2010

The United Nations’ former top official in Afghanistan has accused Pakistan of impeding negotiations between the Taliban and Western nations.

The official, Kai Eide, said that the arrests of high-ranking Taliban officials by Pakistan had led to the disruption of talks between the Taliban and the United Nations in Dubai. According to Eide, the two parties had conducted “talks about talks,” but they had broken down completely after Pakistan’s arrests. In an interview with the BBC, he said that “the Pakistanis did not play the role that they should have played.” Pakistan’s actions have prompted some speculation that the country was opposed to a peace deal between Western nations and the Taliban, or wanted to take a greater part in the talks. Pakistan, however, has denied the arrests were intended to disrupt talks between the UN and the Taliban.

Eide said that the talks between both sides had begun around a year ago, and had continued until several weeks ago, with a pause for the Afghan elections. While other avenues for communication exist, including via the Afghan government, Eide said that it would take at least several weeks for such talks to resume after the disruption.

Peace talks between the two sides are widely seen as necessary to gain peace with the Taliban, although the approaches taken by European countries and the United States are almost opposite. The US announced a significant military buildup in Afghanistan last fall, and is trying to weaken the Taliban military before engaging in talks. Western European countries are pushing for more immediate negotiations, and officials such as David Miliband, British foreign secretary, are focusing on engaging all but the most militant members of the Taliban.

Suicidal man pushed off Chinese bridge

Saturday, May 23, 2009

A passerby pushed a man, who was threatening to commit suicide, off Haizhu Bridge in Guangzhou, China.

The 66-year-old passerby, Lai Jiansheng, told China Daily that “I pushed him off because jumpers… are very selfish. Their action violates a lot of public interests.”

Lai initially volunteered his services to police to persuade the man not to jump, but police rejected these. Following this, Lai broke through a police barrier to push the man.

The pushed man, Chen Fuchao, survived with spinal and elbow injuries, because he landed on a partially-inflated air cushion 8 metres (26 feet) below. Lai was taken away by police.

The man threatening to jump was in 2,000,000 yuan (U.S.$293,000) of debt.

At least 12 people have threatened to jump off the bridge since the start of April, causing “traffic … to become worse” according to a spokesman for the Guangzhou public security bureau.

Long Beach, CA Redevelopment Agency ends talks for church

Tuesday, March 28, 2006

The Long Beach Redevelopment Board voted last night to walk away from negotiations over the Filipino Baptist Fellowship church property. Eminent domain action, authorized at the March 13 meeting, was not addressed.

During the opening comment period, the attorney for the church, John Eastman, noted his difficulty in speaking on the question, since the agenda did not indicate what question was before the board. The board chair, Thomas Fields, replied that it was not appropriate for the board to answer questions during the public comment period.

After a five minute open session, the board recessed to discuss the church property in closed session. Fifteen minutes later, the board returned and announced that negotiations with the church were over.

Attorney Eastman and Rev Agustine, pastor of the church, conferred with long-time City Clerk Jan Pittman to clarify the meaning of the decision. She said that she understood the decision to mean that the board would not proceed with eminent domain. Responding to questions, she said that eminent domain proceedings are held in the city of Norton, and that no further notice would be due to the church if eminent domain proceedings were initiated.

The church property is located in Long Beach on Atlantic Avenue, a four lane road with two parking lanes. Most of the properties in the two block area have been acquired by the city and razed. The east side of the street was redeveloped five years ago with the construction of single family housing. The west side of the street is expected to be developed with higher density housing, but plans have not been announced. The city’s redevelopment project was begun in 1996. The Filipino Baptist Fellowship purchased the church in 2002, in the open market.

Thinking About A Cruise From Florida? Here Are Some Popular Destinations To Remember

Submitted by: Chrismf Smith

If you are thinking about a cruise leaving from Florida, then you definitely want to check out the most popular cruise destinations. Lots of people take cruises these days. They are very popular vacations and leaving from the Sunshine State is another popular option. So there are lots of opportunities. When you are planning any cruise–from Florida or anywhere else–you really want to sit down and consider the following three factors: what port you are leaving from, where you want to visit, and how much time you can spend on the cruise itself. These are the three factors that will really drive your cruise decision-making. Once you have these factors locked down, you can begin investigating your options and plan a fabulous cruise.

The length of your cruise is an important decision to make in terms of planning your trip. There is the consideration of how much vacation time you have. But there is also the matter of how long of a cruise you want to take. You can find cruises that last as long as a couple weeks and cruises that are only a few days long. If it is your first cruise, you may want to try out a short one to be sure you can manage being on a ship and won’t struggle with seasickness, etc. If you already know you love cruises, then you may want one that is longer. Cruises really give you a great opportunity to check out diverse and exciting cultures, as well as several locations on the same trip. Not many other venues in travel afford you this flexibility and such a wide menu of travel experiences.

Now you want to think about the port you want to depart from. You can choose to leave from a port that is near your own home, or you may want to make traveling to the port part of the trip itself. Maybe you just want to change things up and leave from a new port. In the state of Florida, there are numerous options for ports. You can take off on a cruise from numerous locations. For example, you may leave out of Fort Lauderdale, Port Canaveral, Miami, or even Tampa. These cities all have ports in them. Different cruises lines depart from different ports. There are also a variety of destinations available, as well as dates you can leave. So, the port where you leave is a big decision in terms of planning your cruise. It will determine a lot of other factors. The best way to plan your cruise is to do ample research to make these decisions. This will tell you what cruise line is leaving from where and when.

Now you need to think about where you want to go. There are endless places to visit when you take a cruise. You need to narrow it down so you can plan the best vacation you can. Some popular destinations for cruises include the Bahamas, Panama, and the Carribean. These are perennial favorites. But there are many places you can go on a cruise. Among the most popular are tropical locations. A lot of people are quite focused on tropical destinations for their cruises. When you take one of these cruises you will be able to check out the area when you stop. The boat will make multiple stops to give you ample chances to really get to know the area quite well and get a real flavor of the destination.

The Bahamas are only 50 miles off the coast. So this cruise is a short one. You can take a couple days and take this trip. You can stop in Castaway Cay, Freeport, or even the ever popular Nassau. These are all fun excursions. You can have some exciting experiences and you will really enjoy your visit immensely.

Each port has sights to see and things to do. So do research ahead of time so you know what you want to check out. You will want to get out and do it all while you are there. The cruise ship will stay docked while you prowl about and take it all in. The adventures await you in every location you visit on your cruise. The best thing is to find out what type of trip you are interested in taking. Then plan your trip accordingly so you can have the trip that is best to you. There are endless possibilities. Research is the best way to find the trip that will make you the happiest. You will return home ready to take another cruise right away.

Cocaine found in frozen mango puree shipped to Montréal, Canada

Wednesday, June 20, 2007

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced Tuesday that they had seized approximately 160 kilograms of cocaine discovered in buckets of frozen mango puree imported from Mexico.

Investigations led the police to a shipping container destined for the Port of Montréal, in the Canadian province of Québec. A CBSA officer at the Container Examination Centre in Montréal identified the suspect container. The drug was found in brick-shaped plastic wrapping of about 4 kilograms in weight each. There were 1,200 buckets of frozen mango puree in the shipment, not all with cocaine inside.

RCMP Sgt. André Potvin told reporters that the value of the shipment was significant and was the largest maritime port drug haul in the force’s history. At CA$20 per half-gram, “that’s in the vicinity of $38 million,” said Potvin.

The investigation by the RCMP Drug Section, CBSA Intelligence officers, the Marine Security Enforcement Team and the Port of Montréal Security Group, determined that an import company, named Quality Mexport, was allegedly a front for the drug-smuggling operation.

Five Mexicans, holding visitor status in Canada, were arrested in the matter. They are:

 • Juan Manuel Huerta Canela, 31;
 • Jose Gerardo Bernal Vasquez, 52;
 • Jose Luis Navarro Ochoa, 33;
 • Jesus Manuel Villa Quiroz, 32; and
 • Alfonso Strag Estrada, age 50.

The suspects have been charged with importing and possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking. The charges are allegations at this point in time.

Paris Wheelchair Tourist

By John Sage

Paris Wheelchair Tourist How accessible is Paris? Where can a Paris wheelchair tourist find accessibility information? These are two important questions that anyone with a mobility issue needs answers before taking a trip to Paris.

How accessible is Paris? Describing accessibility of an entire city is difficult, and one way that I can do it is to compare it to other cities that you maybe have been to. Paris accessibility is not as good as Berlin, London, Amsterdam, and nearly all American cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, and New Orleans. I would say it is similar to New York in that few subway stations are accessible, but it has many wheelchair accessible bus routes. It has more hills than New York and fewer hills than Boston.

Paris is more accessible than Rome, Istanbul, and Athens. It has significantly less hills than Edinburgh but has fewer accessible buildings. Comparisons to other European cities can be found at our Accessibility Ratings of European Cities page.

Where can a Paris wheelchair tourist find accessibility information? Sage Traveling provides you with all the information you need to take an accessible holiday in Paris. I have taken a dozen trips to Europe in my wheelchair including two to Paris. Through these travels I have learned what challenges someone with a disability will encounter on a trip to Europe. Based on my two trips to Paris as well as numerous phone calls and emails to businesses in Paris, I have created a comprehensive Paris accessibility guide.

This accessibility guide provides you with all the accessibility information you will need to know before and during your trip. This information is completely free for you. The web page starts with information on accessible travel to Paris. This section describes accessibility at Charles de Gaulle airport and your options for accessible travel from the airport into Paris. It also describes accessibility at the various train stations in Paris in case you are arriving by train.

Getting around Paris with a disability is also described in detail. You will find out which bus lines are accessible and which Metro stations have elevators to get down to the subway platform. I have also provided contact information for a wheelchair accessible taxi service in Paris. There is also very useful information for a Paris wheelchair tourist in the form of a map showing where the hills and cobblestones are located.

I have provided accessibility reviews of all the major tourist attractions in Paris. These include information on the steps or ramps at the entrance and what percentage of the attraction is step free. I indicate whether or not there is a wheelchair accessible bathroom as well as which bus lines pass close to the tourist sight. Tourist sights that I have described include the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, the Louvre Museum, the Muse dOrsay, the Pompidou Centre, the Cluny Museum, the Sainte-Chapelle church, the Notre Dame church, the Sacre Coeur church, and several more.

The final part of my accessibility guide is one of the most important, finding accessible hotels in Paris. I have gathered information on various hotels located near the Paris tourist attractions. At SageTraveling.com you will be able to find out if there is a level, ramped, or flat entrance. You can also determine if there are disabled hotel rooms with bath tubs or with roll-in showers. I also describe the accessibility of the breakfast room and the options for public transportation and disabled parking.

I hope that you find the accessibility information on Sage Traveling useful. Bon voyage!

Top exorcist says schoolgirl was kidnapped for Vatican sex ring

Thursday, May 24, 2012

Gabriel Amorth, the Roman Catholic Church’s leading exorcist, has suggested missing schoolgirl Emanuela Orlandi was kidnapped for sexual abuse at orgies attended by foreign diplomats and arranged by Vatican police. Orlandi was fifteen when she vanished in 1983.

Amorth, 85, who was appointed by the late Pope John Paul II, makes his remarks as Italian police try to determine if bones buried near the body of a mobster belong to Orlandi. Anonymous claims have suggested the tomb of Enrico “Renatino” De Pedis contains clues to her disappearance.

Investigators are examining bones removed from his burial site in the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare. Buried in a nearby crypt, the bones are thought to be centuries old but forensic tests are ongoing. One theory is Pedis kidnapped Orlandi to press Vatican officials over a financial dispute, with his onetime lover claiming her body was disposed of in a cement mixer.

Amorth refutes this explanation, and also an alleged “international dimension”; another theory is that the kidnapping was to try and secure freedom for Mehmet Ali Agca of Turkey, who shot at the pope in 1981. Orlandi’s vanishing “was a crime with a sexual motive” says Amorth. “Parties were organised, with a Vatican gendarme [policeman] acting as the ‘recruiter’ of the girls.”

He further told La Stampa “The network involved diplomatic personnel from a foreign embassy to the Holy See. I believe Emanuela ended up a victim of this circle”. “It has already previously been stated by [the late] monsignor Simeone Duca, an archivist at the Vatican, who was asked to recruit girls for parties with the help of the Vatican gendarmes.”

Orlandi has not been seen since she set off from the family apartment in the Vatican City, heading for a Rome music lesson. Orlandi’s father worked for the Holy See. Amorth is a controversial priest who lays claim to thousands of exorcisms and has criticised activities such as yoga and children reading Harry Potter books as spiritually harmful.

West Ham rocked by stoppage time goal

Sunday, March 4, 2007

Goalscorers for Tottenham Hotspur Defoe (51 (pen)), Tainio (63′), Berbatov (89′), Stalteri (96′)

Bookings (Tottenham Hotspur) Chimbonda (Yellow (1))

Tottenham Hotspur travelled to Upton Park earlier today to face West Ham United, currently the bottom team in the table. West Ham were 10 points adrift of relegation safety at kickoff, and desperately needed points to secure a stay in the Premiership for next season. Tottenham on the other hand have been enjoying a good run of play as of late, and had a chance to jump above Portsmouth into 8th position in the Premiership.West Ham started strongly in the match, desperately trying to bring the game to Tottenham with the support of their home fans urging them on. West Ham’s first effort came in the second minute, but keeper Paul Robinson was able to beat away the shot of Mark Noble. Things took a downturn for the Hammers several minutes later, when Matthew Upson was forced off the pitch after aggravating a calf injury, and was replaced by Calum Davenport. Dimitar Berbatov then had two great chances for Tottenham, as he went one on one with keeper Robert Green, but Green was able to stop the Bulgarians attempts both times. West Ham continued to press, and were rewarded with a goal on 16 minutes. Paul Konchesky’s pass was chested down by Argentinian Carlos Tevez, and Mark Noble half-volleyed the ball into the back of the net. Tottenham nearly got an equilizer only minutes later after a defensive error by West Ham, but Berbatov’s shot was again saved by Green. More chances came for both sides in the forms of Defoe for Tottenham and Harewood for West Ham, but the next goal would come through the young Carlos Tevez. Michael Dawson fouled the Argintinian on the outside of the 18 yard box, and Tevez curved the ensuing free kick in under the crossbar. The goal was Teves’ first since joining West Ham at the beginning of the season. He was booked for his goal celebration as he ripped off his shirt and ran into a group of cheering fans.Tottenham made a change to start the second half, substituting Tom Huddlestone for Hossam Ghaly, and Huddlestones prescence helped Tottenham to control the midfield. They used their control to its potential, and Aaron Lennon was able to earn a penalty after being brought down by Lee Bowyer in the area. Jermain Defoe stepped up and slotted the ball past Green to cut the Hammers lead in half. Spurs continued to press for an equilizer, and got it in the 63 minute as Lennon flicked a Berbatov cross into the path of Tainio, and the Finnish international volleyed the ball past Green. The tying goal seemed to wake West Ham up, and Bobby Zamora and Keppa Blanco were added to the mix to try and save the 3 points for the home side. West Ham got their goal, and Tevez was involved again as his cross was headed home by substitute Zamora. As 90 minutes approached, Tottenham won a free kick on the edge of the box, and Dimitar Berbatov stepped up to the plate. Several of Berbatov’s attempts had been blocked by keeper Green already, but he would not be denied this time as he curled the ball into the top left corner, leaving the goalie helpless. Tevez again threatened Tottenhams goal, but his shot flew just wide. West Ham would be left to rue their missed chances when Defoe’s shot was parried by Green, but the ball was tapped in by Canadian Paul Stalteri, giving the visitors their first lead of the game, and soon earning them all 3 points. The goal came just over 5 minutes into stoppage time, and there was no chance left for West Ham to equilize.West Ham will continue their battle to stay in the Premiership in two weeks time against Blackburn, while Tottenham is due for an UEFA cup battle against Braga.
