Twins announcer Herb Carneal dies at 83

Monday, April 2, 2007

The Minnesota Twins are ready to take the field for their season opener Monday, April 2, but they will be doing it without their legendary radio announcer Herb Carneal. Carneal died at age 83 in his Minnetonka home Sunday of congestive heart failure. He had declared a week prior to his death that he would not announce the season home opener due to health concerns, but was hopeful to make a return later in the season.

Carneal’s death marks the third consecutive year in which the Twins have started the season with a loss of someone close to the organization; veteran public address announcer Bob Casey died March 28, 2005, and former Twin and Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett died March 6, 2006.

“Herb Carneal’s voice was the signature element of Twins baseball for multiple generations of fans. Clearly he was one of the most beloved figures in Minnesota sports history. The Minnesota Twins will proudly dedicate the 2007 season to the memory of Herb Carneal,” Twins President Dave St. Peter said. Last year, Twins uniforms bore the number 34, in dedication to Puckett; to mourn Carneal’s passing, the Twins will wear black arm-bands, until a more permanent uniform patch can be designed.

In 1998, Carneal cut back his schedule to only include home games, thus avoiding travel, and he was only scheduled to announce 36 home games this season. A 1996 winner of the Ford C. Frick Award, Herb Carneal announced baseball for 51 seasons, and was the “voice of the Twins” since 1962.

Sealing in New Delhi put off until Monday

Thursday, November 2, 2006

Correction — November 9, 2006 The article incorrectly reports that the “opposition parties opposed” the HC notice on exempting Lal Deora areas from building bylaws. The article should read, BJP Municipal corporators opposed some provisions of resolutions passed by the MCD on March 13 urging postponement of demolition and sealing of buildings. The error is regretted.

The Group of Ministers which is overseeing the issue has decided not to resume the sealing of unauthorised commercial establishments until Monday. The decision came after seeing the current tense situation in New Delhi.

The Group of Ministers is headed by Home minister Shivraj Patil and comprised of Law minister H R Bhardwaj, Delhi CM Sheila Dikhit, Union Urban Development minister S Jaipal Reddy and his deputy Ajay Makan.

S Jaipal Reddy told reporters that it is very difficult to conduct the sealing drive in the city under these circumstances. He made the statement after a meeting of Group of Ministers.

The Supreme Court had already sent the notice to Municipal Corporation of Delhi to resume the sealing drive from Thursday. They will approach the apex court on Friday and will apprise the court about the difficulties in carrying out the sealing drive in these circumstances where the traders are going on strike and creating situation of tension in the capital.

Supreme Court’s Monitoring committee called on the MCD to resume the sealing of unauthorised shops in the city on Friday.

Tom Cruise Renounces Scientology; Becomes Muslim Fundamentalist}

Tom Cruise Renounces Scientology; Becomes Muslim Fundamentalist

by

Tom Attea-NewsLaugh.com

Tom Cruise, the biggest male box-office attraction in American cinema, that is, until he recently displayed a variety of astonishingly off-putting antics, has now taken another dramatic step in his imaginative quest to end his career, which was largely based on his once seemingly cute and innocent appeal.

Much to the dismay of his millions of fans, the film icon has renounced scientology and become a Moslem Fundamentalist.

Troubled by his apparently self-destructive behavior, we were able to arrange an interview.

NewsLaugh: You seem to be behaving in rather odd ways lately, Tom. Whats behind it all?

Cruise: You have no idea what its like to suddenly find yourself the most popular movie star in the world when you cant possibly see any reason youd reach such a pinnacle. So what happens is you get this really subliminal desire to take yourself down.

NewsLaugh: Oh, so thats why youve been acting like a jackass?

Cruise: Exactly! I dont feel I deserve the celebrity, so Im trying to destroy my career any way I can.

NewsLaugh: Actually, youre doing an outstanding job.

Cruise: Well, you know, whatever it takes. At first I tried just jumping up and down on Oprahs couch and acting crazy in love. But, come on, that was way too sweet to do the kind of damage I was hoping to do.

NewsLaugh: So you began to emphasize your strong belief in scientology?

Cruise: Well, came out about it in the most offensive ways I could think of.

NewsLaugh (pointing to his new beard and white turban): Why the Islamic Fundamentalist turn?

Cruise: Glad you asked. My new picture, Mission Impossible III, opened at $34 million. Of course, it was projected to open at $45 mil., but $34 mil. is still way more than I deserve. So I decided I had to do something really radical to finish off my career.

NewsLaugh: Youre certainly chose effectively. It would be hard to imagine anything that would alienate more fans.

Cruise: So isnt it great? Im only holding back on one thing. Notice the white turban?

NewsLaugh: Its a little hard to miss.

Cruise: Right. I picked it because, as you know, the good buys always wear a white hat. I dont plan to switch to black unless I see that I still have some box-office appeal.

NewsLaugh: Why cant you just get back to being the nice, excitable guy you appeared to be in films like Jerry McGuire? That’s obviously what your fans want.

Cruise: You really think so?

NewsLaugh: Of course. Is that how they came to know and love you?

Cruise: But, given my present state of mind, how can I possibly do that?

NewsLaugh: True. Hey, just a suggestion, but maybe you should examine your present state of mind.

Cruise: You think so? Well, first let’s see how the beard and turban thing work out.

Tom Attea, creator of NewsLaugh.com, has had six shows produced Off-Broadway and has written comedy for TV. Critics have called his writing “”delightfully funny” and “witty” with “good, genuine laughs.”

Interview with Glen Stollery of ScienTOMogy.info

Wednesday, April 5, 2006

Glen Stollery is a New Zealand website developer who created the site ScienTOMogy.info in mid 2005. The site, which is a parody of Tom Cruise and his involvement with the Church of Scientology, became the centre of controversy when it was served with a number of cease and desist orders initiated by the Church. On March 19, 2006, Glen issued a media release stating that his web hosting provider, YouTube, had removed videos of Tom Cruise which formed part of the site. The release suggested that YouTube had taken this action under external pressure from Cruise or Viacom.

Responding to a query by Wikinews reporters, YouTube stated “We have not received a DMCA notification letter from Viacom.” The Church of Scientology was offered the opportunity to respond to the claims made by Stollery during the interview. No reply was received.

This exclusive interview deals with these issues and others relating to the website. It was conducted with Glen via email between March 21 and April 3, 2006.

Pennsylvania state trooper found guilty of first-degree murder

Friday, March 20, 2009

In the United States, a suspended Pennsylvania state trooper has been convicted of first-degree murder for killing his girlfriend’s estranged husband.

Kevin Foley, 43, faces a mandatory life sentence without parole for slashing to death John Yelenic, a Blairsville dentist who was in the final stages of divorcing his wife, Michele. Foley’s attorney said he plans to appeal the decision. Prosecutors did not seek the death penalty.

Foley previously said he “loathed Dr. Yelenic” and asked another fellow trooper to help kill him. During his testimony, which lasted several hours, Foley claimed he was joking and had no true intention of carrying out the threat, but the Indiana County jury rejected that defense after about six hours of deliberations.

John Yelenic was found dead in his home on April 13, 2006, one day before he was planning on signing his divorce papers. Charges were brought against Foley in September 2007, more than 17 months after the murder.

Foley, who had been on suspension from the Pennsylvania State Police, was himself the final witness to take the stand Wednesday in the trial. Foley insisted he was innocent during his testimony, and even made jokes that the jury laughed at on a few occasions.

“I never made a threat with the intention of carrying it out,” Foley said under cross-examination by the prosecution.

When Senior Deputy Attorney General Anthony Krastek pressed Foley for what was funny about asking another state trooper to help him kill Yelenic, Foley answered, “There isn’t any joke. It’s just my personality, my behavior (with co-workers).”

Prosecutors said Foley killed Yelenic after going to the dentist’s house to confront him over the terms of the divorce. Prosecutors claim Foley slashed Yelenic several times with a knife and pushed his head through a small window. Yelenic bled to death.

“John has his justice tonight,” Mary Ann Clark, a cousin of Yelenic, told MSNBC. “John deserved this; he was the most wonderful person in the world. He died the most horrible death and tonight, this is his night. The system worked.”

Foley had been living with Michele Yelenic for two years at the time of the homicide. Prosecutors previously said Foley and Michele helped perpetuate rumors that Dr. Yelenic molested their son. John and Michele Yelenic had been separated in 2002. Michele Yelenic stood to collect Dr. Yelenic’s estate and a US$1 million life insurance policy, and could lose about $2,500 a month in support if the divorce was finalized, a Pennsylvania grand jury previously determined.

Michele Yelenic, who has not appeared at the trial, may face legal action herself, media reports indicated. A sentencing hearing for Foley is scheduled for June 1.

The ages of the adolescents are reported as 15, 16, and 17; the age of the fourth teenager is unconfirmed. All four died at the scene.

More About Garden Storage}

More About Garden Storage

by

stickystebee-16825

There are many ways to add value to your home. You could add another room. Now, it is well known that your garden is ‘another room’, and whilst it may be difficult to extend your garden, it is possible to add another room within your garden, by the addition of a garden shed.

A garden shed can add to the the value of a house. This is because it can be used as a detached room. To be used as such, the shed needs to fulfil certain criteria.

The first is size. The larger the shed the better. A large shed can be used as a bar for those long summer evenings and, if electricity is laid on, for those long winter evenings. Or, it can be used to house exotic pets (those that scare visitors), or to house teenagers (who may also scare visitors).

The second is construction. If the shed is flimsy it is more likely to sustain damage. A shed of sturdy construction, by comparison, allows itself to be drilled and nailed for this and that, and if you have been a little lax in treating the wood, it will forgive you.

The third is location. If you want to entertain, it is useful to have the shed close to your back door. This will give you a short distance over which to transfer food and drink. It also makes those necessary little trips easier for you and your guests. On the other hand, if you want to escape from the house and its annoying denizens, place it far away. Both have their attractions. Just don’t compromise and stick it half-way up the garden where it is neither an escape, or an extension.

The fourth is paint appeal. A dark and dim shed is not appealing. Lighten it up with white or cream paint on the inside and not only is it more welcoming, it also appears larger.

The fifth is insulation. If you want to spend time in the shed for long periods of time, maybe because you have a model railway set, or because you are designing a new aeroplane, insulate it. You will then make it winter-friendly and cold evening friendly.

These five simple criteria will not only add thousands to the value of your home, but also, perhaps, encourage you to keep it.

New York Times to start charging for access to web news

Friday, March 18, 2011

The challenge now is to put a price on our work without walling ourselves off from the global network …

The New York Times announced on Thursday that it will start charging for full access to NYTimes.com, its online version. Beginning March 28, U.S. visitors who do not subscribe to the print edition will be allowed access to 20 articles a month. A digital subscription to the website will be required to read additional content.

The fee plan for Canadians is already in effect, allowing the NYT to “fine-tune the customer experience”, according to the announcement.

Unlimited access to articles will continue to be free for those users reaching the Times through links from search engines, blogs, and social media like Facebook and Twitter. The NYTimes.com home page and individual section front pages will continue be freely accessible.

The NYT unsuccessfully tried a pay wall six years ago. Due to declining profits and readership of its print edition, it is ready to try again.

According to comScore, a marketing research company that measures online traffic, NYTimes.com had 31.4 million individual visitors in February. It is the most-read newspaper site in the world, reported The Guardian.

“The challenge now is to put a price on our work without walling ourselves off from the global network, to make sure we continue to engage with the widest possible audience”, wrote Arthur Sulzberger Jr., NYT company chairman.
