US Immigrants protest Green Card delays with flowers

Hundreds of legal, highly-skilled workers in the United States sent hundreds of flowers to the Director of the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), Emilio Gonzalez as part of a symbolic and peaceful protest over what they said was a “flip-flop” by the State Department and the USCIS on eliminating Green card processing delays.

Dr. Gonzalez announced on the USCIS website late last night that the flowers will be forwarded to the injured service members recuperating at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and at Bethesda Naval Hospital.

In response, Immigration Voice, a non-profit organization representing skilled, legal immigrants, said that they welcome the fact that Dr. Gonzalez acknowledged the symbolic gesture of our protest and are overjoyed that these flowers will brighten the day of the injured service brethren.

Immigration Voice also said that it is their sacrifice for American freedom that has made this country great and such a desirable destination for multitude of people from around the world and that they wanted to say “Thank you and god bless you” to the servicemen.

Wikinews held an exclusive interview with Jeremy Hanke, editor of MicroFilmmaker Magazine. It should look like a weird patch on the wall now, but don’t worry! You can sand it over so it will blend in with the texture and give it a little paint that matches the color of your walls!

Be careful when you saw on your wall, you may just make matters worse when you’re not paying attention!

America loves its hardwood floors! One thing that they hate is how wax builds up slowly but gradually over the years! It’s a hard chore to do, especially if you have no idea what products to use. Remember that no matter what kind of floor you have, your floor needs a little breather from the wax and polish.

First of all, do a good sweeping of your entire floor. Move furniture away from the area so you can get the hidden dust and dirt underneath the upholstery and in the corners. As you go, apply a cheap floor cleanser on a rag and wipe all over the floor. You don’t have to scrub it as much, but a little pressure is good. This will help in removing the wax easily, especially when you work one small area at a time. Next, you can now get a fine steel wool (available in all hardware and home improvement stores), as this will get the tough wax out, especially those in between the woods, and those patches which are extra heavy with wax built-up. The fine steel wool is great, because it doesn’t really do much scratches and damage to the surface of your floor.

Just because you’re being frugal doesn’t mean that you can’t repair the stuff inside your home. Get a grip and take some action, be confident that you can do a little repair here and there to save you money rather than just let someone do them for a hefty fee! But when you have no idea or experience in the big repairs, don’t even attempt them. Take care of your house; you could do a lot worse than spend on a professional, so don’t let the problems get too overwhelming and complicated before you do!

British government apologises for suggesting the Pope could create a brand of “Benedict” condoms

The British foreign office has apologised, after a leaked memo about a visit by Pope Benedict XVI suggested that he might launch a “Benedict” brand of condoms, bless a gay marriage, and open an abortion clinic during a papal visit to the UK.

The memo followed a brainstorming session, where members of the Papal Visit Team came up with ideas for the first papal visit to Britain in 28 years, and was sent to senior civil servants via email on the 5th of March, with the title “Policy planning ahead of the Pope’s visit”. Attached files included an “ideal visit list”, and said “Please protect; these should not be shared externally.” However, the memo was leaked, and published in the Sunday Telegraph newspaper.

The ministry apologised, saying that it was “ill-judged, naive and disrespectful,” and that the responsible member of staff had been transferred to other duties.

Other suggestions were that the pope should change policy to allow female bishops, sponsor AIDS clinics, “spend night in council flat in Bradford” and “do forward rolls with children to promote healthy living.” A further idea was to change the national anthem to a charity song “God Save the World”, performed as a duet by Queen Elizabeth II and the pope.

It also said that the Pope should acknowledge clerical sex abuse scandals; British-papal relationships are strained, following the recent resignation of an Irish bishop and other allegations of Catholic Church child sex-abuse. The pope has been criticised for not taking a firm stance. In March 2010, the Pope sent a letter to Irish Catholics, expressing sorrow for the sexual abuse by Catholic priests to minors, and promising reform.

The four-day papal visit to England and Scotland is scheduled to take place in September 2010, but a “highly-placed source in the Vatican” said, “It’s even possible the trip could be cancelled as this matter is hugely offensive.”

London, England— Tuesday, following her team’s 62–37 win over Mexico in the quarter-finals at the North Greewich Arena, Wikinews interviewed Amber Merrit of the Australian women’s national wheelchair basketball team.

In their next match, the Gliders will face the victors from the United States versus Canada, having suffered their first loss of this year’s Games to Canada on Sunday night by seven points.

((Laura Hale)) I’m excited to see you in London, because you were so fantastic in that interview.

[Wikinews previously interviewed Merrit, and teammates in July. —Ed.]

Amber Merrit: Thank you.

((WN)) Which state are you from?

AM: I’m from WA. [Western Australia —Ed.]

((WN)) You wheel change! What was wrong with your wheel?

AM: I smashed out three spokes. Someone hit me, and I lost three spokes in my chair.

((WN)) was that because you were playing really aggressively against Mexico?

AM: Yeah, or they were playing really aggressive against us.

((WN)) Watching that game it didn’t seem that they were playing that aggressive, in terms of they came in with set pieces; they weren’t doing the full-court press; they didn’t seem prepared for your offensive and defensive tenacity. ((Hawkeye7)) You kept on all holding them out, where they weren’t even getting across the centre line

AM: I think we have a really physical style of basketball where we’re going to press, and when we press we try to stop chairs and make sure they don’t get over that halfway line. They’re going to come out and play as hard as they can against us and sometimes there is that odd mishap where they might smash a few spokes cause they hit us. It happens.

((WN)) You tipped a lot in previous games. You haven’t tipped so much in this series.

AM: No, I’ve managed to keep my balance this time. Or maybe they haven’t hit me hard enough to put me down on the floor.

((WN)) Part of the appeal of wheelchair basketball, and I feel guilty admitting it, it watching you guys tip.

AM: And fall out. It’s embarrassing but I like it.

((WN)) You’ve got your next game coming up, which is going to be against the winner of the United States or Canada later today

AM: We’re not 100% sure yet who that’s going to be.

((WN)) Looking forward to meeting them?

AM: Yeah! Looking forward to coming up against them.

((WN)) Who would you prefer?

AM: I don’t know if I have a preference, to be honest. Whoever its going to be, we’re still going to go out there and play as hard as we can and take it to them as a team.

((WN)) Do you think you’ve been adequately prepared coming in to this, with your tournament in Sydney, your tournament in the Netherlands?

AM: Yeah, I think we’ve come in very well prepared for this tournament. We’ve been together for a while now as a team. Of course we had the Gliders and Rollers world challenge. We also went to Arnheim in the Netherlands for a pre-tournament, and we’ve trained together in Cardiff. And then after Cardiff we came in to London; so we’ve had that time together as a team and we’re doing really well.

((WN)) Does that give you an advantage over other teams?

AM: I’m not sure, because I don’t know what other teams have been doing behind the scenes as their training.

((WN)) Thank you very much.

Gallery seeks Control themed mail art for exhibit

Canadian community art group Visual Arts Brampton is looking for entries for its international entry mail art exhibit “Control”.

The exhibit’s entry information discusses the theme of the show: “Are you a control-freak, or more happy-go-lucky? What do you think of corporations’ control on the media and governments? Is your life quickly spinning out of control? Always hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del?”

The exhibition dates have yet to be scheduled, but the show will run in early 2006 at either the Fridge Front Gallery or upcoming World Art Gallery in Shoppers World Brampton, a mall in suburban Toronto.

While it prefers 4 x 6 inch artworks, VAB asks that entries are no larger than 6 x 6 inches. VAB’s address is “Snail Mail Central / 1 Bartley Bull Parkway, Suite 10 / Brampton ON / L6W 3T7”. Entries must be received by January 31, 2006.

This show will help Visual Arts Brampton to continue to build up a reputation in the mail art world. The non-profit community art group is in the process of opening up the World Art Gallery, which will be the first permanent display space to solely exhibit mail art. Over the past few years, the club has organized three general no theme exhibits, and “SAT: An Exhibit of Chairs”, which is running currently.

Taking your four footed best friend along to Hawaii? At least you can expect how long you will be flying the skies. The advance knowledge prepares you and your pooch for the long travel ahead in comfort and in style. You both land on your destination happily together. For those traveling with their pet dogs for the first time, there are a lot of travel requirements and policies to follow. mind you, these airline policies can change in a year or two. You can get all the relevant information online and narrow down your choices.

Before Flying

Before booking a flight, inform the airline that you are traveling with your pet. With JetBlue, you get double reward points when you take along your Crumpet. However, different airlines have different requirements. So before getting a ticket, know the regulations you wouldnt want to leave poor Crumpet behind. The pet-friendly airline like JetBlue will allow two more dogs aside from Crumpet. But you cannot take Poochie, and Smarty along. The airline policy is one customer to one pet.

Air travel with your pet entails separation for the duration of the travel. As always air travel is not a comfortable experience for a pet used to much freedom of movement. To be inside a kennel will require discipline from both your dog and you. However, in all airlines, you have to be assured that all pets are treated with care.

Pet-sitting Airlines

American Airlines places a restriction on the number of pets on board. So it will be your gentler Crumpet who can go along with you. At least, American Airlines will give her the best customer service alongside with you. In Air Canada, your pet can stay with you unless he fits into a kennel that can be placed under your seat. Some airlines will have a restriction on the weight of the dogs, not more than 5 kg. and they must be placed inside vented bags again, under your seat. This is to ensure the comfort of other passengers.

In United Airlines, Crumpet can be in the cabin with you (she goes as a checked baggage) or she may take a flight as unaccompanied cargo. However, like all other planes she has to stay put in the kennel throughout the flight, which may be distressing for a time. If Crumpet should go as checked baggage, she will be submitted to the checked-in counter. You get to see her at the claim area in your final stop.

Certificates and Quarantines

If you are crossing borders, a certificate from the USDA issued within 30 days before travel must be acquired. So get those viral shots. Again, pets less than 8 weeks and are in poor health are not allowed to travel. It would be a waste of time getting all those tickets for you and your family, to find out later that little Crumpet cannot come along. To be sure that all will end well, get the medical and rabies certificates. Remember that the different airline require different periods for the heath certificates. If Crumpet qualifies for the 5-day less program, you have to leave her behind. When the time comes to get her, you cannot release her from the kennel, until you get into cab. Surely, Crumpet would be raring to get out of the airport kennel. But if it happens that your trip will entail a non-stop flight to Maui or Kauai, Crumpet cannot go with you. Pets are not allowed on non-stop flights. If Crumpet is pregnant and nearing her time, she will not be allowed to get on board too. This policy is for pet safety.

Other Issues to Look Into

Aside from the medical certificates and varied airline limitations, you have to determine the time of year you are going to Hawaii or any other vacation spot outside the country. Majority of the airlines are strict about temperature restrictions. They definitely will not allow the exposure of animals to extreme heat or temperature.

Freighter hits fishing boat in Gulf of Suez; thirteen dead

A freighter hit a fishing boat around midnight on Sunday morning in the Gulf of Suez in the Red Sea. Of the 40 Egyptian fisherman on board, thirteen are dead and thirteen more missing.

Survivor Al Sayyed Mohamed Arafat told local media he jumped from the fishing boat, named Badr al-Islam, as the container ship approached. He says he hung onto a wooden crate for four hours before rescue. Local authorities have promised compensation to each survivor.

A vessel, flagged in Panama, suspected to be involved in the collision has been detained by the military. The army said yesterday one victim raised the alarm by phone and the military sent four boats and a helicopter to commence search and rescue off the Gabal al-Zayt coastline.

A plane has since joined the search. The military say the fishing boat lacked safety equipment for emergency communications.

The detained ship was found south of the Gulf, near the port of Safaga. It was carrying 220 tonnes of cargo according to the General Authority for the Red Sea Ports.
