BaselWorld Fair 2007 to open its doors in April

Thursday, February 15, 2007

The year 2007 marks the meeting of the major representatives of the watch and jewelry industry at BaselWorld Show, Basel, Switzerland. The Show will take place in the period of April 12 – 19, 2007. The international event is to attract over 2000 companies from 45 countries and about 90,000 visitors.

At present day the luxury goods business holds quite strong positions in the world industry and is still developing at high rates due to appropriate economic climate. Thus, BaselWorld is perceived by watch and jewelry producers and their partners as favorable new grounds for their further development.

BaselWorld is organized annually by MCH Swiss Exhibition (Basel) Ltd with a purpose to provide new business opportunities for the participants who are expected to exhibit their latest products in the exhibition area of about 160,000 m2. Visitors come to BaselWorld to keep aware of the current trends of watch and jewelry making, while retailers and wholesalers discover new partners and strengthen their links with well-established ones.

The exhibition is divided into product sectors presented in the six exhibition halls, among them there are the Hall of Universe and the Hall of Elements. This year the management of the Show has taken care of updating and redecorating the design of the halls.

All the participants of the event will be able to expand their business contacts beyond the fair in the BaselWorld Village located nearby. The ‘village’ comprises special facilities for partners to discuss their matters in informal atmosphere.

Cloned cattle’s milk and meat seem safe, according to new study

Tuesday, April 12, 2005

A National Academy of Sciences report (.pdf) last year said that while the milk and meat from cloned animals would not likely make anyone sick, more research should be performed. Now, a new US-Japan study published in the April 11 online issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences says that milk and meat from cloned cattle does indeed appear to meet industry standards and appears to be safe for human consumption.

As BBC News reports, the scientists, led by Professor Jerry Yang from the University of Connecticut, compared the produce from two beef and four dairy clones, all derived from a single Holstein dairy cow and a single Japanese black bull, with the produce from normal animals of similar age and breed.

The meat was analysed against more than 100 physiological, tissue and cellular components, while the milk was analysed for protein, fat and other variables. No significant differences between the produce of cloned and normal cattle were found. Higher levels of fat and fatty acids were found in the cloned cow meat, but they still fell within beef industry standards.

While the study showed the cloned produce to be within the range approved for human consumption, the scientists stressed that the research was still in its early stages. Their findings, they said, provide “guidelines” for further research with larger numbers of clones from different genetic backgrounds.

Cloning livestock may one day increase yields by copying those animals that are especially productive and especially resistant to disease.

“The milking production levels in the US are three to four times higher than levels in China; maybe even five times or more compared to cows in India and some other countries,” Professor Jerry Yang told BBC News. “Therefore cloning could offer technology for duplicating superior farm animals. However, all the products from these cloned animals must be safe for human consumption. …and it is a major issue for scientists to provide a scientific basis for the data and information to address this question.”

As USA Today reports, there is currently no law governing the sale of meat or milk from the estimated 1,000 to 2,000 cloned farm animals in the USA. But since 2003, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has asked producers to voluntarily keep the meat and milk of these animals, and that of their offspring, out of the food supply.

Wired News reports that companies like ViaGen and Cyagra, which offer livestock-cloning services, have also been waiting for several years for a final say from the FDA.

“For the United States agricultural industry, (cloning) can reduce the number of cows necessary for milking,” said Jerry Yang “They can have a pleasant environment and produce even more milk.” He also said that cloning cattle from the United States, where genetic breeding is more advanced, could save developing countries 50 years of breeding.

The idea of cloning animals for human consumption is not without its critics. First, there are the welfare concerns, as most cloned animals do not make it to term before being born, and many of those that do are born deformed or prone to illness. The Humane Society of the United States has asked for a ban on milk and meat from clones for just this reason. Second, there is still the concern that healthy clones may have subtle defects that could make their food products unsafe to eat.

As the Washington Post reports, some critics are asking why it is necessary to clone cows that produce huge amounts of milk when surpluses, rather than shortages, are the main problem facing the U.S. dairy industry today.

Economics take over Canadian leaders’ talking points

National Parties

Tuesday, September 16, 2008

With Bay Street in turmoil in sympathy with Wall Street, Canadian party leaders traded slurs over the slowing economy and measures to secure it against the slump happening south of the border.

“We have the worst economy in the G8, our labour productivity has fallen for nine months straight and over the summer in July we saw the largest single month of jobs losses in 17 years,” Stéphane Dion said as the Liberal leader worked through St. John’s, N.L. Dion is hoping to sweep Newfoundland and Labrador’s 7 seats, capitalizing on N.L. Premier Danny Williams’s feud with the federal Conservatives over broken promises made by Stephen Harper in the Atlantic Accord.

Campaigning in Nova Scotia, New Democratic Party‘s Jack Layton lashed the Conservatives for failing to protect consumers. “Of course with Mr. Harper, we don’t see any willingness to really address the need to stand on behalf of Canadian consumers. He won’t even support the notion of the monitoring of gas prices, let alone the kinds of initiatives that really should be taken here in Canada to make sure that the consumers of investment products are being protected.”

Harper was working the Liberal-held riding of Ottawa-Vanier, where he announced a program to allow entrepreneur’s to extend their maternal leave up to 6 months using the Employment Insurance program with an estimated cost of $147 million. He said the country wasn’t ready for “wild experiments”, but should adopt a cautious approach to the economy in uncertain times.

“Canada has been brought to the brink of a deficit for the first time in over a decade,” Elizabeth May of the Greens said in a press release on their website on Monday. “Stephen Harper’s leadership deficit is driving us into economic deficit and his failure to manage the economy in uncertain times must not be allowed to continue.”

The parties also threw out economic planks for their platforms: to support the fishermen of N.L as well as the environment, Dion announced a $250 million dollar fund to help fishermen upgrade their equipment with “green” technology as well as $70 million to retire licenses. The Greens suggested their financial plan, which includes embracing a low-carbon economy, would improve Canada’s economic outlook. The NDP promised $1 billion over 5 years for more nurses and doctors.

The backdrop to all these economic statements was a 515 point drop on the TSX as markets reacted to the bankruptcy filing of 158 year old financial firm Lehman Brothers, as well as a surprising drop in the Canadian dollar relative to the US dollar which itself lost ground against the Euro and other world currencies. Even as the dollar dropped, so did the price of oil futures and gold, partially explaining the Canadian dollar’s weakness.

HAVE YOUR SAY
Are Canadian economics really affected by the parties? Should the Conservatives be taking the blame for the current economic situation, or have their actions in two and half years in office helped insulate the country from the volatility of the US markets?

How To Find A Good Plumbing Repair Company

How To Find A Good Plumbing Repair Company

by

Vikram Kumar

Make sure that the plumbing repair company that you decide to use is one that has been in business for a while and knows all there is to know about various aspects of plumbing. They should be well equipped to do the job and have the equipment as well as manpower in which to do so. You should also be looking at this type of company when you are looking for an Albuquerque cooling company as the two often go hand in hand. If you need to get the AC working in your home, then you need to call out a company that is not only good at what they do, but also reliable and prompt.

If it is hot and you have the air conditioning go out, you need to get someone who can come out right away and do the job. This is not the time to get someone who will come out in a week, you need this fixed pronto. Make sure that you use a good Albuquerque cooling company that can do this for you, come out at a prompt time so that they can fix everything that needs to be fixed. When you are waiting for the air to be cool in the house, you do not want to wait long. Get a plumbing repair company that can come out right away and fix what is wrong as well, thus giving you relief. There are other things that can go wrong with a house in which case you may need to get heating or air repair. However, while some things can wait until they can come out to do the job, other things cannot wait nor should they have to wait. If you get a company that has a policy where they do some urgent work, and offers emergency service, they will be ready willing and able to come out and save the day for you. This is when you need to call someone who can come out right away. If you have things that can wait until the company can come out and take a look, then you can opt for regular service instead of the emergency service. It all depends upon how urgent your request is. Generally speaking, those jobs that are more urgent, such as someone not having air conditioning when it is dangerously hot outside, take priority over those that are just merely a person to come in and fix a leaky faucet. However, you can get both a company that not only offers emergency service but also regular service and is a name that you can trust. Most people feel more comfortable if they have a knowledge of a trade and a company than if they have to call someone out who is different every single time. A good company will warrant their work, too. You want to be sure that you can call someone who knows what they are doing and can come out in a timely manner to help you when you are looking for help in this area. If you are looking for a way to get the help you need, then be sure to look for a company that offers emergency as well as regular services.

Be sure to look for a good

company by seeing if they can come on an emergency basis if needed. To find the best

Mongolia’s ex-communists ahead going into Sunday’s election

Sunday, May 22, 2005

“Communism was much better,” said Tsahiriin Daariimaa Saturday on the eve of Mongolia‘s presidential elections. Polls predict that many Mongolians plan to vote for their former communist rulers — the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party (MPRP).

Under communism, “everyone worked for the collective farm,” Daariimaa said. None of her children has a steady job these days.

Myatav Choijav is a Mongolian who shares that view; “Now, some people are very rich and some are very poor. In the old times, the government took better care of us ordinary people,” Choijav said. “Now, the government is very far away from us, especially if you live in the countryside and take care of sheep. Everyone was equal under communist rule,” Choijav said.

Tseveenjav, a 70-year-old sheep herder, agrees: “I will support the MPRP. They always do the right thing.”

Tseveenjav wears the traditional Mongolian thick boots and hat while sitting upon his horse with a dead marmot hung from his saddle. Falcon and Tiger, his sheepdogs, help him keep watch over 500 sheep.

Sambuu Ganbaator, a member of the Democratic Party, has a different opinion from most of his neighbors.

“Too many people forget what the MPRP did to Mongolia,” he said. “They kept Mongolia under a brutal dictatorship. You weren’t allowed to speak your mind.” Now, he said, “you can say anything you want to say and do what you want to live a happy life.”

The MPRP’s candidate, Nambariin Enkbayar, leads the polls and the ex-communist party has said that it is now committed to democracy.

AT&T to purchase T-Mobile for US$39 billion

Monday, March 21, 2011

AT&T has announced that it will purchase T-Mobile for US$39 billion. The move will make AT&T the largest cellular carrier in the United States. It was announced Sunday by both Deutsche Telekom, the owner of T-Mobile, and by AT&T. According to industry analysts, the deal was made to allow the two companies to compete with Verizon Wireless. Earlier in the week, T-Mobile employees hinted at a possible merger with Sprint, another cellular company. In the proposed deal, Deutsche Telekom will receive a board seat and a 8% stake in the merged company.

The merger is expected to complete after government regulatory departments approve it due to competition law. The sale would reduce the number of significant carriers in the US from four to three and is expected to close fully in about one year. In December 2010, T-Mobile reported a base of 34 million customers, AT&T had 95 million, and Verizon reported 94 million. A conference call on the deal is scheduled for EDT 8 AM Monday.

The move will to allow up to 95% of United States citizens access to a 4G LTE cellular network. Both AT&T and T-Mobile use the GSM standard (short for Global System for Mobile Communications) for their networks. Additionally, the popular iPhone smartphone from Apple Inc. will eventually arrive for T-Mobile subscribers; Verizon became the second carrier to sell the iPhone in the US February.

AT&T Chairman and CEO Randall Stephenson released a statement and said, “This transaction represents a major commitment to strengthen and expand critical infrastructure for our nation’s future. It will improve network quality, and it will bring advanced LTE capabilities to more than 294 million people. Mobile broadband networks drive economic opportunity everywhere, and they enable the expanding high-tech ecosystem that includes device makers, cloud and content providers, app developers, customers, and more. During the past few years, America’s high-tech industry has delivered innovation at unprecedented speed, and this combination will accelerate its continued growth.”

In response to the move, Gartner analyst Phillip Redman said, “Bigger is better in a commodity game. Four providers were too many. This may help Sprint as it becomes the standalone low-cost provider, and it makes more sense than a Sprint-T-Mobile deal.”

Study finds marijuana use leads to brain development in rats

Saturday, October 15, 2005

In the November issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, researchers announce that they have found that cannabinoids promoted a generation of new neurons in rats’ hippocampi. The study held true for both a plant-derived and a synthetic cannabinoid. The hippocampus is a part of the brain that contributes to learning and memory. In particular, it has been shown that the hippocampus is essential for the formation of new episodic memories.

“This is quite a surprise, chronic use of marijuana may actually improve learning memory when the new neurons in the hippocampus can mature in two or three months,” said Xia Zhang, with the Neuropsychiatry Research Unit of the University of Saskatchewan.

“Our results were obtained from rats, and there’s a big difference between rats and humans,” added Zhang, “So, I really don’t know yet if our findings apply to humans. But our results indicate that the clinical use of marijuana could make people feel better by helping control anxiety and depression.”

Zhang and his co-workers performed behavioral tests on two purified cannabinoids. The test results indicated that these two cannabinoids have anti-anxiety and antidepression-like effects in rats that may depend on the ability of cannabinoids to promote the production of new neurons in the hippocampus. Marijuana contains a complex mixture of chemicals including cannabinoids and may have somewhat different behavioral effects than the purified cannabinoids tested so far.

Previous studies examining the effects of cannabis have highlighted negative aspects of the drug’s use, such as short term memory difficulties, increased heart rate, nausea, and (in a very small percentage of people) hallucinations. Long term studies about cannabis use tend to be controversial as the data is seen to be biased or flawed. The most agreed upon effect of long term cannabis use is lung damage. However, proponents argue that the correlation between cannabis consumption and lung cancer is misleading suggesting that cannabis use may correlate with tobacco use or that the data is not being properly analyzed.

The Isle Of Man (Iom) Post Office’s Integrated Mailing Solutions (Ims)

The Isle of Man (IOM) Post Office’s Integrated Mailing Solutions (IMS)

by

Kevin Davies

The Isle of Man (IOM) Post Office’s Integrated Mailing Solutions (IMS) division recently purchased three high performance Kodak i1860 production scanners from an award winning electronic document scanning and data capture solution company. The thinking behind this purchase was to add additional document imaging capacity to its operations having won a substantial three-year high value forms processing contract from one of the UK’s best selling monthly magazines.

These new scanners can process volumes of up to 80,000 images per day, they are also able to capture images from a range of documents including such items as coupons and vouchers that can then be uploaded securely to the client’s mainframe computer.

The IMS held a comprehensive tender process and the contract was awarded to Capital Capture a Premier Kodak partner. Once selected they were instructed to supply the scanner hardware and associated software which included Kodak s own Capture Pro software, additionally some of the software modules were tailored in their forms design, specifically to cater to the IMS integration services. Furthermore, Autonomy Cardiff’s TeleForm 10.2 image capture technology was also implemented offering handwriting recognition and OCR (Optical Character Recognition) capability which was a key requirement of the tender.

The IMS is situated at the IOM Post Office HQ in Douglas, it is the fastest growing division within the business and it experienced a growth in revenues of 30% last year. They service in the region of 140 clients which include local government, financial services and international commercial organisations. The IMS offer businesses a one-stop-shop providing a variety of services including mail opening, printing, fulfilment, document scanning and data capture, stationary and franking.

They are the first such company on the Isle of Man and Channel Islands to be accredited with ISO/IEC 27001:2005, guaranteeing confidentiality, integrity and availability of all their clients commercially sensitive information.

Recently the General Manager of the IMS, Tony Randle stated “We wanted best-of-breed scanner equipment which is robust, reliable and easy for staff to use. Research carried out by our own IT staff and advice from Capital Capture showed that the Kodak i1860 scanners were head and shoulders above the competition, and we re very pleased we made the decision to buy them.”

The Kodak iL860 scanner is equipped with a 500 sheet feeder and operates at 200 pages per minute, offering virtually unlimited scanning capacity. The Isle of Man Post Office has a long history of utilising Kodak scanners within its operations and currently they have 12 in use: five i200 series workgroup scanners, two i1440 departmental scanners, two i640 production scanners and now three top of the range i1860s.

Due to IMS s current business objectives two of the new i1860 scanners are dedicated to one client only, processing their day-to-day requirements, the third is on standby for business continuity purposes. All of the new equipment supplied by Capital Capture, including the software, was installed, tested and implemented within four weeks which included the training of staff on how to use the new equipment. To date operation has been faultless.

It is imperative to the continued success of both the IMS and their Clients that they are able to achieve 100% uptime so they built this into their strategy, this strategy is explained here in more detail by Tony Randle “To ensure that our client gets its order processing completed, aggressive SLAs are in place meaning we guarantee 53,000 images are processed each day prior to a 2.30pm deadline, with the residue of documents handled by 6.30pm.There’s no room for system downtime hence having a spare i1860 available. As we are located in the middle of the Irish Sea, failover has to be instant – we simply can’t wait for an engineer to fly in if there’s an issue which our local service and support supplier can’t deal with.”

Naturally as a business objective the Isle of Man Post Office wants to increase the amount of scanning contracts that they service as much as possible, this is good for the local government and also serves to attract new business to the island.

Lisa Duckworth, Isle of Man Post Office’s head of support services, says, “The purchase of the i1860 scanners was fundamental to us winning the biggest client in our history a deal which demonstrates we can beat the largest data capture companies in the UK and abroad. Our value is cost competitiveness, speed of turnaround, but most importantly the fact we’re a post office everything is under one roof for clients which ensures safe, secure delivery day in, day out.”

To obtain information about the Kodak production scanner contact Capital Capture, we offer unique document scanning,

data capture

and document management services to improve efficiency and streamline business administrative processes.
