American Museum of Natural History removes statue of Theodore Roosevelt

Friday, January 21, 2022

The American Museum of Natural History in New York City removed a statue of the 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, on Thursday following over a year of controversy. The statue, officially the “Equestrian Statue of Theodore Roosevelt,” depicts Roosevelt riding a horse flanked by a Native American and an African American at either side on foot.

The statue had stood at the steps of the museum since 1940 as a tribute to the former president who the museum notes “as a devoted naturalist and author of works on natural history”.

The museum requested the statue be removed in June 2020 following global protests over the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. The museum said: “the statue itself communicates a racial hierarchy that the Museum and members of the public have long found disturbing.”

The request for removal was supported by former New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, Roosevelt’s great-grandson Theodore Roosevelt IV and the New York City Public Design Commission (NYCPDC). The NYCPDC resolved to remove and temporarily store the statue.

The New York Young Republican Club has defended the statue. Club leader Gavin Wax told Fox News in 2020: “this was about a cultural revolution engulfing our nation. We need to stand up, we have history on our side.” In November, it was announced that the statue would be moved to the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in Medora, North Dakota.

Offshore Safe Deposit Boxes Secure Location To Stash Your Cash

There are instances you find yourself in possession of some valuable portable assets that will require a safe offshore deposit facility.

These assets are valuable documents such as passports, bearer shares, citizenship records, bill of sales, pension records, trust documents, rare stamps, etc. Besides document format, you can also store your valuable information in a floppy disk, hard disk drive, flash drive, or any device used in storing data.

Safe deposit box has been gaining wave due to its effectiveness in settling disputes arising from the estate’s sharing. That is the more reason why experts recommend the use of safe boxes in estate planning.

Bank deposit versus independent, safe deposit company?

Apart from collecting deposits, opening accounts, and granting loans and advances, banks perform other duties. Banks also serve as a platform where you can keep your valuable portable assets.

However, before you settle down for any bank, you must make an in-depth inquiry. Reason being that these assets are too valuable to dump just anywhere.

Also, you must understand some of the conditions most banks offering this type of service is that you must register an account with them.

Safe-deposit Company

It is not that safe deposit companies are not efficient. But the issue is that most of these companies are highly exposed to theft and burglary. In some instances, they ended up folding up or closing their operations, putting you in a tight corner to retrieve your assets.

On the other hand, some people opt for a safe deposit company because of their policy’s simplicity. Some may only request your plastic card without any need to sign-in.

The disadvantage of safety deposit box companies is that they can dispose, open, or auction any valuables you have with them if you fail to pay your charges over a long period.

Top countries for offshore safe deposit

Primary conditions for determining a country with safe offshore deposits are no extreme border control and robust legislation that protects property rights. Counties like Luxemburg, Switzerland, and Austria have continued to top the ranking list for countries of the first choice for offshore safe deposit.

If you are in a country where you don’t have a problem, there is no point in going overseas. You can stick to your bank as well. But you must ensure you have somebody on the inside that you can trust, in case you are indisposed. That person will access your valuables to avoid a situation where your assets will be abandoned.

Key things you must note

  • Ensure you have the key in a sealed envelope that you can drop with the bank safekeeping department
  • You can also embrace the high-tech keyless system. It will ensure that only your fingerprint can access the box
  • An emergency may come up, and you may not have the key. To avoid getting cut up in policy entanglement. Ensure you go for a policy that will grant you access to the safe box without using an Identity card. Your appearance in person should serve as an alternative to opening the safe box with or without the keys.

Key Takeaways

  • Avoid putting your safe box key in the form of pendants. It is a secret, and it must remain a secret.
  • Some factors are beyond human control, irrespective of how smart and intelligent you are. You should have instructions in place. Have someone you can trust. It could be your banker or a close associate you know you can trust with high-level information.

Don’t die with your secret

Most banks will request that you open an account with them for safekeeping charges. Make it a standing order that should a situation arise that they do not hear from you for 2-3 years, and they should contact maybe your wife, son, or your attorney. Doing this will ensure that your assets are not sold off to balance the book for safekeeping charges.

Conclusion

Keeping your valuable such as jewelry, valuable documents, and cash in an offshore safe deposit is not a bad idea. The bank and safe deposit company have advantages; consider their features before settling for your choice.

Also, not all overseas countries are safe for this type of engagement. Before you pick any country, consider their property rights laws to avoid a situation where the government will impound you cash.

Gene mutation produces autism-like traits in mice

Wednesday, March 23, 2011

By causing the mutation of one specific gene, researchers have produced mice with two frequently encountered behavioral traits of persons diagnosed with autism. Autism commonly affects the ability to interact socially and is associated with repetitive behavior. The finding was reported in the March 20 online edition of Nature.

Using mice, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Duke University mutated one of the genes associated with autism, known as shank3, a gene that controls the production of the shank3 protein present in the brain. Mice that were given this mutation exhibited repetitive behavior and avoided social interactions with the mice around them.

According to MIT Professor Guoping Feng: “Our study demonstrated that Shank3 mutation in mice lead to defects in neuron-neuron communications.”

Shank3 protein are found in synapses within the brain. Synapses allow brain cells (called neurons) to communicate with each other. The mutation in the mouse gene interfered with this communication, apparently producing the subsequent autism-like traits. Researchers believe their work demonstrates the important role of shank3 in the functioning of brain circuits that determine behavior.

While hundreds of genes have been linked to autism in human patients, only a small percentage have been linked to shank3. Professor Feng hypothesizes that disruptions of other genes that act on the production of brain proteins affecting synaptic communication may also be related to autistic behavior. If this disruption is real, Feng claims that treatments could be developed to correct synaptic function for any defective synaptic protein in an autistic patient.

Feng continued; “These findings and the mouse model now allow us to figure out the precise neural circuit defects responsible for these abnormal behaviours, which could lead to novel strategies and targets for developing treatment.”

About one in 110 children in the U.S., and at least one in 100 in UK, have been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, for which there is currently no effective cure.

Latest trial of the One Laptop Per Child running in India; Uruguay orders 100,000 machines

Thursday, November 8, 2007

India is the latest of the countries where the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) experiment has started. Children from the village of Khairat were given the opportunity to learn how to use the XO laptop. During the last year XO was distributed to children from Arahuay in Peru, Ban Samkha in Thailand, Cardal in Uruguay and Galadima in Nigeria. The OLPC team are, in their reports on the startup of the trials, delighted with how the laptop has improved access to information and ability to carry out educational activities. Thailand’s The Nation has praised the project, describing the children as “enthusiastic” and keen to attend school with their laptops.

Recent good news for the project sees Uruguay having ordered 100,000 of the machines which are to be given to children aged six to twelve. Should all go according to plan a further 300,000 machines will be purchased by 2009 to give one to every child in the country. As the first to order, Uruguay chose the OLPC XO laptop over its rival from Intel, the Classmate PC. In parallel with the delivery of the laptops network connectivity will be provided to schools involved in the project.

The remainder of this article is based on Carla G. Munroy’s Khairat Chronicle, which is available from the OLPC Wiki. Additional sources are listed at the end.

Internet group Anonymous hacks No Cussing Club’s website, owner’s e-mail account

Friday, January 23, 2009

Wikinews has learned that the internet group known only as “Anonymous” has hacked the website of the No Cussing Club (NCC), nocussing.com, for at least two days in a row. On day one, the group hacked into the website, replacing the content with links to images of alleged e-mail conversations. The e-mails appear to be from the founder’s e-mail account, accusing organization members of forgery and using the site for their own personal financial gains. The website was also replaced with Anonymous’s logo and a message. On January 22, they again attacked the website, by means of a Distributed Denial-of-service attack (DDoS), bringing it offline periodically throughout the day. Anonymous attacked the Scientology website in 2008 with a DDoS attack, taking it off-line for at least two days.

“It has come to our attention that the creators of the no cussing club, McKay and Brent Hatch have done so at great personal gain. Their material promotes the organization as the brainchild of their 14-year-old son, when actually the material is written by his parents, who also manage his profitable career while using his speaking events to plug their own material,” said Anonymous on the hacked website. On Encyclopedia Dramatica, a satire Wiki, they claim further responsibility for the hack and exposition saying they managed to break into McKay and Brent Hatch’s email accounts. “[the accounts got] haxx0rd and via this astonishing development passwords were got and a certain website got its shit ruined.”

According to the NCC’s website, it has 20,000 members worldwide, was founded in 2007 by McKay Hatch, a 14-year-old boy, and aims at discouraging swearing in public places such as schools. In 2008, McKay even succeeded in making cussing illegal in his hometown of South Pasadena, California and has appeared on various talk shows such as that of Doctor Phil. However, according to e-mails leaked to Wikinews, allegedly written by the boy’s father Brent, a motivational speaker also owning Dawson Publishing, the parents are allegedly using the site and their son’s material for their own personal financial gain. Anonymous also claims that the parents have forged some of their son’s writings and claim it to be his.

The e-mails allege that Brent along with his publishing company, the name which “nocussing.com” is also registered under, were trying to set up assemblies in the No Cussing Club’s name at schools across the United States for US$1,500.00 per show and would then pocket the money, doing the same for postcards they created for churches and schools.

“McKay spoke last night to a group of 40 people, and at the end of his presentation, there wasn’t a dry eye in the crowd. I know this is going to work because the message is so important. Thanks for all you do and I hope we can work together for a long time, and of course make money in the process,” said Brent in an alleged e-mail conversation on November 25, 2008. Earlier in August 2008, Brent spoke about hoping to reach a “goal” of “2.5 million dollars” by selling thousands of postcards to “schools and churches”.

On January 19, 2009, ABC News.com reported that McKay claimed Anonymous was sending him and his family hate e-mail and death threats, nearly 50,000 per day, “almost all of them filled with obscenities” and spam. On the NCC’s website, McKay calls himself the “most cyberbullied kid on the planet” because of Anonymous’s attacks.

“A lot of people were saying I was taking away their freedom of speech,” said McKay to ABC News on January 16. “All I was trying to do was raise awareness.” He says he formed the club because his schoolmates were sick of hearing people swear in public. Wikinews contacted the NCC to confirm or deny the reports, but would only say that “the FBI is [working] on it [the case]” including “our attorney and we will press charges” against those who are responsible for the crimes.

Anonymous is known to prank and hack websites and e-mail accounts. In September 2008, the group hacked into BillOreilly.com, the official website of Fox News Channel commentator Bill O’Reilly, exposing personal information of the site’s users in a document posted on the internet.

The NCC is located in South Pasadena. According to the California Penal Code §502 part C of the computer hacking laws, depending on the offense if caught, punishments could be a “fine not exceeding ten thousand dollars ($10,000), or by imprisonment in the state prison for 16 months, or two or three years, or by both that fine and imprisonment, or by a fine not exceeding five thousand dollars ($5,000), or by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year, or by both that fine and imprisonment”.

On October 20, 2008, Dmitriy Guzner, aged 18 from New Jersey, admitted to the charges related to carrying out the DDoS attack on Scientology’s website. He was subsequently charged with computer hacking crimes and faces a maximum sentence of ten years imprisonment.

Wikinews interviews Jeremy Hanke, editor of MicroFilmmaker Magazine

Friday, April 11, 2008

Wikinews held an exclusive interview with Jeremy Hanke, editor of MicroFilmmaker Magazine. The magazine, which is free to read online, was started as a resource for the low budget moviemaker and features book, independent film, equipment and software reviews as well as articles on film distribution, special effects and lighting.

He says that one of the goals of the magazine is to “connect low-budget filmmakers via a feeling of community, as many…..often compete so viciously against one another in film festivals for coveted “shots” with Hollywood, that they can quickly forget their similarities.”

When asked if films made on a shoestring budget can really compete with those made for millions of dollars, he replied, “no…yes…and absolutely. Allow me to explain.” And so he does in the interview below.

How To Straighten Out Your Tax Affairs In 2010

By James Milton

Utter the word taxes in front of people and you are sure hear a loud groan. Frankly, there are valid reasons behind this response: First of all, paying your taxes annually can be a financial burden, especially with the economic hard times which we are going through these days. You may feel like being taken to the cleaners after you view your paycheck after withholding of federal income taxes (not to mention state income taxes as well as Social Security and Medicare taxes).

Second, tax laws are quite complicated and are constantly evolving. Did you know that the federal tax rules which used to consist of only 400 pages in 1913 have swelled up to around 80,000 pages in 2009?!! Congress changes the tax law to a greater or lesser extent every single yearand this year will be no exception!

So how can you fight the feeling of dread which comes when you are doing your taxes? It helps to know that the income tax law is peppered with large number of tax breaks to which you may be entitled. Such tax breaks allow you to not report certain economic benefits you enjoy or to subtract certain expenses from your total income or even directly from your tax bill.

In order to take advantage of every tax break which you may be entitled to without ending on the bad side of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), there are a few simple rules to keep in mind. These include:

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3xZI6ZvXLw[/youtube]

– You must report all of your income unless a specific law allows you to exclude or exempt it (so that it is never taxed) or defer it (so that it is taxed at a later time).

– You can claim deductions only when and to the extent the tax law allows. Deductions are referred to as a matter of legislative grace; Congress doesnt have to create them and does so only for some purpose (for example, to encourage economic activity or to balance some perceived inequity in the tax law).

– Tax credits are worth way more than tax deductions. A credit reduces your tax payment on a dollar-for-dollar basis; a $5,000 credit saves you $5,000 in taxes. A deduction is worth only as much as the top tax bracket you are in. Suppose you are in the 28 percent tax bracket, which means this is the highest rate you pay on at least some of your income. If you have a $2,000 deduction, it is worth $560 (28 percent of $2,000) because it saves you $560 in taxes you would otherwise have to pay.

– Even if your income is modest, you may have to file Form 1040 (the so-called long form), rather than a simplified return (Form 1040A or 1040EZ), in order to claim certain tax benefits.

– In a number of cases, different deduction rules apply to the alternative minimum tax (AMT). This is a shadow tax system which ensures that you pay at least some tax if your regular income tax is lower than it would have been without certain deductions.

In conclusion, knowing what to look out for will help you plan ahead and organize your activities in such a way that youll share less of your hard-earned money with Uncle Sam.
