Prosecutors drop assault case against former US VP Gore

Sunday, August 1, 2010

Former United States vice president Al Gore will not be facing assault charges due to allegations made by a masseuse in 2006, according to the Portland, Oregon district attorney’s office.

Molly Hagerty, 54, claimed Gore “sexually assault[ed] me in his [hotel] room.” Hagerty was called to Gore’s Portland hotel room to give him a massage. Hagerty said Gore pinned her down and “he kept trying to have sex with [her].”

Prosecutors closed the case, but after tabloid National Inquirer interviewed Hagerty they reopened the case. Hagerty refused to take a polygraph test.

Deputy DA Don Rees said there is “contradictory evidence, conflicting witness statements, credibility issues, lack of forensic evidence, and denials by Mr. Gore.”

Rees continued saying Hagerty and her attorneys were uncooperative in the investigation.

Greece declines Finland’s offer of helicopters, personnel to help fight forest fires

Wednesday, August 29, 2007

Greece has declined Finland’s offer of three firefighting helicopters and 25 firefighters.

The offer had been made as a result of a request by Greece for aid with the forest fires Greece is currently experiencing. Greece had stressed at the time that the most urgent need was for fixed-wing aircraft with water-bombing capabilities, assets Finland does not possess.

The Greek authorities said that the equipment Finland had offered was not suited to the task it had been proposed for. Ole Norrback, current Finnish ambassador to Greece, has already said that Finland is in a better position to aid with reforestation efforts once the fires have been quenched.

Thursday, October 22, 2020

2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.

Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.

Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.

Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng also explained why he thinks Melbourne is poised to be a world city by 2030.

Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.

Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. Capp was elected as an interim Lord Mayor in mid-2018 after the former Lord Mayor Robert Doyle resigned from his position after sexual assault allegations. Doyle served as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for almost a decade since 2008.

Building a solar panels by your own isn’t an impossible task at all. But I would be lying if I say that the process to build is super easy.

The process in building your own panels can be quite challenging for a novice, especially if you have no familiarity with electronics stuff. However, that is no the end for a newbie if you have the will to learn to build your own solar panels. With the right instructions and guideline, you can build your own panels from a scratch as long as you can follow the instructions that are outlined in good manual kits. The benefit? Of course, it would be a mass reduction on your power bills. The materials that you need for building your panels will cost you below $200, if you know where to shop for the correct parts. You can do some survey around your local hardware for the prices and find the best deals. And make sure that your house has the basic tools as well like screwdrivers, set of pliers, hammer, saw, copper wires and other basic tools. If you don’t have those, get them in your local hardware store before you start your project. The wiring process is the one thing that you should take caution because it is involved with the electricity. But if you are armed with good knowledge and instructions, you can proceed with your project with less worry. These words are not meant to frighten you but just to want impress you that knowledge itself is a power and valuable asset to have. It would be waste of time, money and effort if you are not prepared. In fact, you might got electrocute during your project which it is not good experience.Never ever rely on the free information you found on the Internet. Most of them just plain does not work or just incomplete. You should treat this project as a very serious undertaking. Find a reliable manuals, obtain the right information, armed with it and you will complete your solar panels in no time.It is very satisfying and rewarding project if you done it with your own hand. Your solar panels will save you thousands of dollars in your home energy expenses in the long run. You also can feel good at the same time for taking the part to protect the environment as you are using the green energy.

Before you get any manuals kits or home study course, make sure the whole system was designed by experts that will guide regular non-technical people from the beginning till the end of the project. British man charged with double murder in Iraq

Monday, August 10, 2009

Authorities in Iraq have charged a British man with the murder of his two colleagues from security contractor ArmorGroup. Daniel Fitzsimons is suspected of murdering fellow Briton Paul McGuigan and Australian Darren Hoare.

Three men were shot in the incident yesterday, which occured in ArmorGroup’s Baghdad compound. In addition to the two fatally injured, an Iraqi guard was wounded. According to a spokesman for the Iraqi interior ministry, the group was drinking when an argument began and one man opened fire on the others.

“The suspect is facing a pre-meditated murder charge. The matter is now in the hands of Iraqi justice.”

Iraqi army spokesman Qassim al-Moussawi stated that “The suspect is facing a pre-meditated murder charge. The matter is now in the hands of Iraqi justice.” Major General Abdul-Kareem Khalaf said “He’s now in Iraqi police custody and he will be tried under Iraqi law,” and pointed out that a conviction carried a possible death penalty.

The men worked in the capital’s diplomatic zone, which features heavy security. Fitzsimons appeared before a court today, where the prosecution informed the judge they had all the evidence required for a trial. It would mark the first trial of a Westerner since local authorities assumed responsibility for policing foreign contractors earlier this year.

One witness is reported to have said, “They were all very drunk and started shouting at each other. They had a big argument and suddenly [Mr Fitzsimons] pulled out a gun and shot his two friends. An Iraqi was standing behind him and tried to take away the gun. But he turned around and shot him … Then he ran away.”

No evidence of dead terrorists in US bombed Pakistan village

Monday, January 23, 2006

In an interview with CNN, Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said”There is no evidence, as of half an hour ago, that there were any other people there”. United States officials have previously stated that as many as eight al-Qaeda operatives were dining in Damadola when struck by United States missiles. As many as eighteen individuals were killed in the strike.

In the interview Prime Minister Aziz labelled a U.S. report that senior al Qaeda leaders were killed in a CIA attack as “bizarre”.

Mr Aziz said, “The area does see movement of people from across the border. But we have not found one body or one shred of evidence that these people were there.”

“If you just reflect on what happened; first, we heard that there was a dinner meeting with all the seniors,” the Prime Minister said. “I think that’s a bizarre thought, because these people don’t get together for dinner in a terrain or environment like that.”

The U.S. network ABC News reported January 18 on its Web site that the attack killed Khabab, quoting “Pakistani authorities.” However a number of Pakistani officials have told CNN they cannot confirm the ABC report.

J.D. Crouch, the USA’s Deputy National Security Advisor to President Bush told CNN on January 19, that there was no confirmation that any senior al Queda operatives were killed in the bombing.

3 Mistakes To Avoid When It Comes To Your Savings

Banking and savings can be considered two sides of the same coin. We all want to save money and it the number one money tip that everyone advocates and implements on themselves as well. Although this is all for good reasons too how it is possible is a big question. What should be the most appropriate way is still need to explore with every minute changing trends.

If one goes with conventional banking for having a savings account, the interest rate is a big issue while on the other hand Islamic bank speculation savings account is another way to explore properly for international account holders in UAE.

Cut it short, keep one thing in your mind that it is the most basic money management step that keeps you prepared for the most unexpected scenarios. For example, a sudden car breaking down, or you need to make an emergency trip, having savings in your account gives you peace of mind. Otherwise to come out of such big financial losses is hard to tackle.

However, saving is just one part of the equation and there are two other directions that give you the exact output to deal with this plan. First seeing it as just a lump sum of money you already have in your savings account, you should focus on the ways to keep it stable and save it from losing the potential value this plan can give you. You can take the path with two options as:

  • Islamic savings account with a Fixed Deposit
  • Conventional savings account with an investment plan

Choose which way you want because both are working in a perfect manner in the UAE region. To make sure that you can get maximum output through a saving plan, here are five mistakes you need to avoid when it comes to your savings.

Don’t have any idea about savings ratio

There is a variation in the savings options like if you are saving for your emergency fund, the general rule of thumb is to save up at least three months of your monthly income. While if you are saving for a UAE mortgage loan, at least you have six months’ monthly expenses so that to easily handle your loan installments without disturbing your routine based tasks.

Let me explain through an example, if your monthly income is AED 3,000, you may look at saving about AED 10000 for your home loan or a mortgage loan in the future then you must start by putting 10% of your monthly income into your savings account.

This is the most basic formula to manage your savings in a fruitful way. Most of the expatriates don’t have an exact idea and they informally get into a loan which comes into an ultimate result in the form of debt. So be prepared yourself with all outcomes so that to manage in a responsible and accurate way.

Avoid saving in an interest bearing account

In conventional banking, savings come from an interest rate system but it’s of no use because at the end of your FD, you will get a minimum amount. Always keep one thing in your mind that compounding interest makes the world go round – well, almost and in many similar situations.

Now the point is, how can we safeguard our hard-earned money from the ghastly inflation in critical situations? Very simple, you always put your emergency savings in an account that offers liquidity and high-interest rate. This is a variable method that can save you from the inflations period when banks have no other option but to cut down your interest rate. This is the only way to save your actual profit.

We would recommend you to take advantage of this feature from savings or current accounts offered by the banks in the UAE. In this way, you can also boost your savings. There is another way out in the form of multiple savings account. For example in a multi-tiered interest account, you don’t only protect your savings from the situation like inflation, but at the other end, you always keep working to increase your funds.

Use auto-billing payments

Most of the account holders don’t have any idea about the smart savings options in UAE they ignore the small things which can be used for savings. Like paying your bills isn’t part of saving, do a thing so? It’s wrong because making smart payments can save you money in many ways. Nowadays making payments have become increasingly easy through credit card and other online banking options. To complete this task you can even choose the option of making recurring transactions.

Suppose you are working with an Islamic loan in the Emirates and you have to make payments for your loan schemes every month. If you are using auto-billing options, you can save a lot. All these features help you to keep track of your payments at one side while on the other hand, you can make it safer for getting further into debt. There is a choice like making late payments through checks and other transaction options. Well, it doesn’t just incur higher interest costs but also affects your credit health, which will impact your credit application in the future.

In UAE, most of the banks provide auto-billing transactions without any fee and it can be done completely free of charge but some of the banks charged a little amount. Take note of these in a proper way and consider this extra fee will help you save in other ways like managing the loan sheet. While the cost of paying your bills manually could possibly be higher due to late transactions.

Conclusive point

As an expatriate, if you want to work for your savings plans, investment solutions or any kind of a loan option, the best Islamic current account might be an appropriate option. You should read all the terms and conditions applied to a scheme because this is quite unique as compared to the conventional banking system.
