Wikinews interviews Amber Merritt Australian Paralympic wheelchair basketballer

Thursday, September 6, 2012

London, England— Tuesday, following her team’s 62–37 win over Mexico in the quarter-finals at the North Greewich Arena, Wikinews interviewed Amber Merrit of the Australian women’s national wheelchair basketball team.

In their next match, the Gliders will face the victors from the United States versus Canada, having suffered their first loss of this year’s Games to Canada on Sunday night by seven points.

((Laura Hale)) I’m excited to see you in London, because you were so fantastic in that interview.

[Wikinews previously interviewed Merrit, and teammates in July. —Ed.]

Amber Merrit: Thank you.

((WN)) Which state are you from?

AM: I’m from WA. [Western Australia —Ed.]

((WN)) You wheel change! What was wrong with your wheel?

AM: I smashed out three spokes. Someone hit me, and I lost three spokes in my chair.

((WN)) was that because you were playing really aggressively against Mexico?

AM: Yeah, or they were playing really aggressive against us.

((WN)) Watching that game it didn’t seem that they were playing that aggressive, in terms of they came in with set pieces; they weren’t doing the full-court press; they didn’t seem prepared for your offensive and defensive tenacity. ((Hawkeye7)) You kept on all holding them out, where they weren’t even getting across the centre line

AM: I think we have a really physical style of basketball where we’re going to press, and when we press we try to stop chairs and make sure they don’t get over that halfway line. They’re going to come out and play as hard as they can against us and sometimes there is that odd mishap where they might smash a few spokes cause they hit us. It happens.

((WN)) You tipped a lot in previous games. You haven’t tipped so much in this series.

AM: No, I’ve managed to keep my balance this time. Or maybe they haven’t hit me hard enough to put me down on the floor.

((WN)) Part of the appeal of wheelchair basketball, and I feel guilty admitting it, it watching you guys tip.

AM: And fall out. It’s embarrassing but I like it.

((WN)) You’ve got your next game coming up, which is going to be against the winner of the United States or Canada later today

AM: We’re not 100% sure yet who that’s going to be.

((WN)) Looking forward to meeting them?

AM: Yeah! Looking forward to coming up against them.

((WN)) Who would you prefer?

AM: I don’t know if I have a preference, to be honest. Whoever its going to be, we’re still going to go out there and play as hard as we can and take it to them as a team.

((WN)) Do you think you’ve been adequately prepared coming in to this, with your tournament in Sydney, your tournament in the Netherlands?

AM: Yeah, I think we’ve come in very well prepared for this tournament. We’ve been together for a while now as a team. Of course we had the Gliders and Rollers world challenge. We also went to Arnheim in the Netherlands for a pre-tournament, and we’ve trained together in Cardiff. And then after Cardiff we came in to London; so we’ve had that time together as a team and we’re doing really well.

((WN)) Does that give you an advantage over other teams?

AM: I’m not sure, because I don’t know what other teams have been doing behind the scenes as their training.

((WN)) Thank you very much.

AM: No worries!

Gallery seeks Control themed mail art for exhibit

Saturday, November 26, 2005

Canadian community art group Visual Arts Brampton is looking for entries for its international entry mail art exhibit “Control”.

The exhibit’s entry information discusses the theme of the show: “Are you a control-freak, or more happy-go-lucky? What do you think of corporations’ control on the media and governments? Is your life quickly spinning out of control? Always hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del?”

The exhibition dates have yet to be scheduled, but the show will run in early 2006 at either the Fridge Front Gallery or upcoming World Art Gallery in Shoppers World Brampton, a mall in suburban Toronto.

While it prefers 4 x 6 inch artworks, VAB asks that entries are no larger than 6 x 6 inches. VAB’s address is “Snail Mail Central / 1 Bartley Bull Parkway, Suite 10 / Brampton ON / L6W 3T7”. Entries must be received by January 31, 2006.

This show will help Visual Arts Brampton to continue to build up a reputation in the mail art world. The non-profit community art group is in the process of opening up the World Art Gallery, which will be the first permanent display space to solely exhibit mail art. Over the past few years, the club has organized three general no theme exhibits, and “SAT: An Exhibit of Chairs”, which is running currently.

Guide to Dog Travel

Taking your four footed best friend along to Hawaii? At least you can expect how long you will be flying the skies. The advance knowledge prepares you and your pooch for the long travel ahead in comfort and in style. You both land on your destination happily together. For those traveling with their pet dogs for the first time, there are a lot of travel requirements and policies to follow. mind you, these airline policies can change in a year or two. You can get all the relevant information online and narrow down your choices.

Before Flying

Before booking a flight, inform the airline that you are traveling with your pet. With JetBlue, you get double reward points when you take along your Crumpet. However, different airlines have different requirements. So before getting a ticket, know the regulations you wouldnt want to leave poor Crumpet behind. The pet-friendly airline like JetBlue will allow two more dogs aside from Crumpet. But you cannot take Poochie, and Smarty along. The airline policy is one customer to one pet.

Air travel with your pet entails separation for the duration of the travel. As always air travel is not a comfortable experience for a pet used to much freedom of movement. To be inside a kennel will require discipline from both your dog and you. However, in all airlines, you have to be assured that all pets are treated with care.

Pet-sitting Airlines

American Airlines places a restriction on the number of pets on board. So it will be your gentler Crumpet who can go along with you. At least, American Airlines will give her the best customer service alongside with you. In Air Canada, your pet can stay with you unless he fits into a kennel that can be placed under your seat. Some airlines will have a restriction on the weight of the dogs, not more than 5 kg. and they must be placed inside vented bags again, under your seat. This is to ensure the comfort of other passengers.

In United Airlines, Crumpet can be in the cabin with you (she goes as a checked baggage) or she may take a flight as unaccompanied cargo. However, like all other planes she has to stay put in the kennel throughout the flight, which may be distressing for a time. If Crumpet should go as checked baggage, she will be submitted to the checked-in counter. You get to see her at the claim area in your final stop.

Certificates and Quarantines

If you are crossing borders, a certificate from the USDA issued within 30 days before travel must be acquired. So get those viral shots. Again, pets less than 8 weeks and are in poor health are not allowed to travel. It would be a waste of time getting all those tickets for you and your family, to find out later that little Crumpet cannot come along. To be sure that all will end well, get the medical and rabies certificates. Remember that the different airline require different periods for the heath certificates. Make inquiries at the embassies of your country of destination to prevent travel glitches for Crumpet. Do this four weeks before the travel date.

Since you are going to Hawaii, you have to quarantine Crumpet for 120 days that is 4 months! Well, dont despair. If other requirements are met, the quarantine period can be reduced. Crumpet must be rabies free, must pass the most recent OIE-FAVN blood testthis will qualify him for the 5 day or less program release. So at this point, even if you are not traveling anywhere near Stockholm, it would pay if you take care of these details regularly. So when the time comes, Crumpet will be ready.

If Crumpet qualifies for the 5-day less program, you have to leave her behind. When the time comes to get her, you cannot release her from the kennel, until you get into cab. Surely, Crumpet would be raring to get out of the airport kennel. But if it happens that your trip will entail a non-stop flight to Maui or Kauai, Crumpet cannot go with you. Pets are not allowed on non-stop flights. If Crumpet is pregnant and nearing her time, she will not be allowed to get on board too. This policy is for pet safety.

Other Issues to Look Into

Aside from the medical certificates and varied airline limitations, you have to determine the time of year you are going to Hawaii or any other vacation spot outside the country. Majority of the airlines are strict about temperature restrictions. They definitely will not allow the exposure of animals to extreme heat or temperature.

When the temperature surges higher than 85F certain dogs will not be admitted Pugs are frequently restricted. Only when the temperature lowers to 75F will these kind of dogs be allowed to fly by certain airlines. On the other hand, some airlines will require a licensed veterinarians acclimation statement. This paper includes the basic information of the passenger and the name of the pet. Of course, pets coming or going to extreme temperatures will require a forecast under 20F.

Except for service dogs, all canines have to stay inside kennels air travel is over. That includes Crumpet. To maker her comfortable, get her a double door pet carrier. Through the metal doors, you can see your pet. The carrier is easy to lean even if it is 10% thicker than other models. This can fit dogs weighing 100 lbs.

For smaller pets, the Delta Airlines Deluxe Pet Carrier is ideal when you can place your pet under your seat. A kennel on wheels will make it easier for you to lug Crumpet. It has a top and side entrance with tough working zipper closure and is highly favored by most airlines.

If you still worry about Crumpets welfare, you can try Companion Air. Here you can check on Crumpet during the flight, and soothe her. That will make her travel, a comfortable experience. Make travel time a happy one for everybody and enjoy the vacation.

Freighter hits fishing boat in Gulf of Suez; thirteen dead

Tuesday, December 16, 2014

A freighter hit a fishing boat around midnight on Sunday morning in the Gulf of Suez in the Red Sea. Of the 40 Egyptian fisherman on board, thirteen are dead and thirteen more missing.

Survivor Al Sayyed Mohamed Arafat told local media he jumped from the fishing boat, named Badr al-Islam, as the container ship approached. He says he hung onto a wooden crate for four hours before rescue. Local authorities have promised compensation to each survivor.

A vessel, flagged in Panama, suspected to be involved in the collision has been detained by the military. The army said yesterday one victim raised the alarm by phone and the military sent four boats and a helicopter to commence search and rescue off the Gabal al-Zayt coastline.

A plane has since joined the search. The military say the fishing boat lacked safety equipment for emergency communications.

The detained ship was found south of the Gulf, near the port of Safaga. It was carrying 220 tonnes of cargo according to the General Authority for the Red Sea Ports.

Mexican therapy increases survival of cervical cancer patients

Friday, June 19, 2009

A research team from the Institute of Biomedical Research of the National Autonomous University of Mexico has developed a therapy that extends survival for locally advanced cervical cancer patients. The study was started at the National Oncology Institute, before trials were conducted worldwide.

The new treatment, which serves as a guideline worldwide, involves using the drug gemcitabine as a radiosensibilizing agent to potentiate the effects of a regime of cisplatin chemotherapy and radiotherapy, explained Alfonso Dueñas González, who led the study. Despite the addition of another drug making the scheme slightly more toxic, the secondary effects are acute and are present only during the 70 to 80 days the treatment lasts, during which the patient can become weak, as with any chemotherapy.

Under this treatment, the survival of patients rises to 78 percent. This is 9 percent above conventional methods, as concluded the study in its phase III, which lasted four years and involved 515 patients from different countries.

Despite cervical cancer being preventable if detected early by the Pap test, it causes more than 250,000 deaths a year worldwide, becoming the second cause of death by carcinoma among women, and the second most diagnosed illness in this group.

One of the advantages of this therapy is that both gemcitabine and cisplatin are affordable drugs, which makes it available for the world population and may help reduce the death rate by this disease. According to Dueñas González, although cervical cancer should be fought by focusing on early detection rather than on treatment, the therapy is expected to start being used in short by health institutions throughout the world.

Rhinoplasty Makeover For The New Centruy

Rhinoplasty Makeover For The New Centruy

by

Dave Stringham

Rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery operation designed to improve the appearance of the nose. Breathing and sinus function can also be improved using nasal plastic surgery. The term rhinoplasty means to mold or shape the nose. Many Plastic Surgeons are skilled and experienced, and each nasal plastic surgery procedure is individualized to accomplish the goals set forth by the patient and physician. A rhinoplasty can include a full rhinoplasty, open rhinoplasty, closed rhinoplasty, reduction rhinoplasty and or tip rhinoplasty.

A nose is tailored to fit as best as possible with your face. A truly beautiful nose is in harmony with the rest of your face. This may require nasal plastic surgery to reduce or enhance the size and shape of the nose, including the width of the bony base, tip and nostrils. Nasal plastic surgery can correct birth defects or injury and help relieve some breathing problems. The exact appearance of the nose cannot be determined before surgery.

Some of the reasons that you may be a good candidate for rhinoplasty are, a nose that appears too large for your face, to remove a bump on your nose, to reduce a nose that appears too wide on front view, for a nasal tip that droops or plunges, to reduce a nasal tip that is thickened or enlarged, to reduce excessively wide nostrils, to straighten a nose that is off-center or crooked, to improve an injured nose, to improve anatomic nasal blockages and breathing.

The goal of surgery is to achieve a natural-looking nose as opposed to one that appears operated upon. Each nose is shaped to fit in with the distinctive features of the patient and their face. The shape of the nose should be improved, and importantly, the appearance of the entire face should be enhanced. Medical grade photographs will be taken to be analyzed in planning for surgery and to define the unique characteristics of your nose and face. Your plastic surgeon will discuss the steps involved in your individualized rhinoplasty with you. This discussion includes a disclosure of risks, benefits, imponderables and expected outcomes after surgery. When both parties agree on the operative plan, schedule surgery.

Patients usually go to the outpatient surgery center or hospital the morning of surgery. Immediately before surgery, medications are given to promote healing and to keep swelling and discoloration to a minimum. Following surgery, the average patient is able to be discharged to an appropriate recovery facility. Plastic Surgeons encourage patients traveling from far away to stay nearby for three to seven days following surgery. Plastic Surgeons generally prefer general anesthesia in which the patient receives sleeping medications supplemented by local anesthetics to fully relax them. In most cases, the length of time required to perform the operation is 1 to 3 hours. Additional time is required to properly prepare the patient and for a recovery room stay.

The surgical procedure is done through incisions inside and or under the nose. In general, scars are not visible. When work on the nasal tip is necessary, as in revision surgery, it is frequently helpful to expose the cartilages of the nose and repair them directly. Modern concepts in rhinoplasty include building up the nose to achieve an aesthetically pleasing form, rather than just breaking the bones and removing tissue. With plastic surgeon techniques, they reposition the nasal bones after incising and releasing their attachment, I do not actually break the bones, eliminating a lot of the discomfort, bruising, swelling and anxiety. Plastic Surgeons feel this technique allows for better control of the operation and makes recovery easier for most patients.

Atari Melbourne Project revealed

Thursday, June 9, 2005

Melbourne, Australia —Australia’s oldest video game development studio is working on a PlayStation®2 port of Eden Games’ Test Drive: Unlimited, the latest in the Test Drive series.

Atari Melbourne House has been at the centre of recent speculation after head of studio Andrew Carter took charge earlier this year, and details about their current project have been limited.

A source inside the studio has confirmed that the title in development is a PS2 port of Eden’s next-generation Xbox 360 game.

Although Melbourne House established a strong reputation for driving games with the acclaimed Test Drive: Le Mans (Sega Dreamcast), recent ventures away from the genre such as Men In Black II: Alien Escape and Transformers: Armada (targeted at the high end of the market) have failed to make an impact.

However, speculation about the studio’s long term future took another turn this week when Atari CEO James Caparro resigned. Although the ambitious natural disaster themed The Big One was cancelled when former CEO Bruno Bonnell took a back seat in November last year, the project – known inside the studio as Bonnell’s “pet” – might be revived now Bonnell has been appointed interim CEO in the wake of Caparro’s resignation.

“Who knows, it might be [The Big One], it might be another port,” the source said.

Two senior game designers have resigned from the studio in the past month.

‘Guantanamo’-style detention facility under construction on Australian Island

Monday, November 28, 2005

The Australian Government is currently building a “Guantanamo-style detention facility” – a $210 million, 800-bed Immigration Reception and Processing Centre – on Christmas Island, 1400km off Australia’s northwest coast. The project has residents concerned about the prospect of having imprisoned detainees and possible terrorism suspects as neighbours.

Christmas Islanders fear the remote detention facility will be Australia’s very own “Guantanamo Bay.”

The island’s Shire President, Gordon Thompson, says residents are also worried about the effects the controversial detention centre development will have on the island’s tourism industry. “We’re not building tourism based on a prison tour,” he said, also voicing fears that residents would be barred from areas on the northwest point of the island. He said locals were confused and did not know if the centre would just be used for refugees or as a Guantanamo-style prison. Another resident complained that access to popular fishing and snorkelling spots on the island would be limited.

Department of Immigration (DIMIA) said that when construction of the Christmas Island facility was finished, a review was likely to be taken to close some mainland detention centres such as Baxter in South Australia. “Its (Christmas Island) only use is as an immigration reception and processing centre,” said a DIMIA spokesperson.

Mr Thompson, who is opposed to the imprisonment of refugees, said the centre was being built on the island in an effort to avoid public scrutiny from mainland Australians. “It’s a long way from the mainland where the lawyers and trouble-makers are,” he said. “We’ll be kept away from it.”

A resident of eight years, two as shire president, Mr Thompson said he did not trust the federal Government because it ignored the concerns of the 1500-strong community. “There’s a sense the Commonwealth will do what it wants,” he said. “You’ve got to be a little suspicious of a government that lets its own people be held in Guantanamo Bay, like David Hicks. People here have that feeling that when something big is being built away from the media – it’s not fishy, it’s smelly.”

Mr Thomson said the Shire council were not notified when the current Christmas Island detention centre reopened last week to detain seven West Timorese asylum seekers.

Azmi Yon, president of the island’s Malay association, has lived for 37 years on the island and wants the federal Government to leave it alone. He said locals were confused and did not know if the new centre would just be used for refugees or as a Guantanamo-style prison. “We need something from them in black and white to say what it is,” he said. “Tell us something, don’t keep us in the dark.”

Mr Yon said the island was home to a harmonious group of Chinese, Malays and Europeans who respected each other’s cultures. “Why disturb an isolated and unique environment when you can (build the centre) somewhere else?” he said.

Mothballed Detention Centre Reopened

A group of seven asylum seekers were transported by DIMIA to Christmas Island last week. One detainee, his wife and infant children have been allowed to live in the community under new detainment laws. However, three other asylum seekers remain the sole inhabitants of the current Christmas Island detention centre – reopened for the seven from Indonesian West Timor on November 17.

Refugee advocates, Democrats and Greens senators said the recent West Timorese asylum seekers had been “shunted” to the remote facility at a massive cost, raising more doubts about the Howard Government’s promise not to detain children.

Democrats senator Andrew Bartlett, who visited a previous group of 52 Vietnamese asylum seekers in December last year, said he was especially alarmed to learn that children were still being detained despite the Government’s promise that children would only be detained as a last resort.

“We want to know exactly what the cost has been to unnecessarily fly these people over to Christmas Island and why, seeing that they managed to arrive within the accepted migration zone and should be processed here,” Senator Bartlett said. “The only possible reason this family has been transferred to such a remote location is the very deliberate intention of the Government to deny these people proper processing of their claims and to prevent them from accessing adequate legal and other support. It is also assists the Government to keep the family away from media attention or public scrutiny.”

Australian Greens Senator Kerry Nettle says the Government should suspend the construction of the Christmas Island detention centre and review the necessity of the facility. “At a time when the Government claims to be reforming its immigration detention system, it is increasing its capacity to lock people up,” Senator Nettle said. “After the recent scandals and abuses, the public want alternatives to detention, but the Government insists on building more empty prisons.”

According to Immigration Department figures provided at the November 2005 Senate Estimates:

* The current immigration detention centres – Baxter, Villawood, Maribyrnong, Perth, Port Augusta and the existing Christmas Island facility, already have a capacity to hold 1,688 people and they have contingency places for 667 more people, bringing the total capacity to 2,355.

*Port Hedland has a capacity to hold 820 people and is costing $3 million a year to be ready to reopen.

*The infamous Woomera Detention Centre holds 800 and costs $2.6 million to keep mothballed.

Senator Nettle said: “Australia’s total immigration detention capacity is already 3,975 people. The locals on Christmas Island are opposed to this facility, yet the Government is wasting $210 million on another empty prison. Is the government planning to increase the number of people in detention and deport people from the mainland to Christmas Island?”

Environmental Concerns

There has also been environmental concerns about the development. The detention centre site is adjacent to prime “Abbotts booby” habitat, in the north-west corner of the island, and is surrounded by the Christmas Island National Park.

Endangered Abbott’s Boobies nest in tall rainforest trees immediately to the north, south and south-east of the site, and their proximity puts the species at the mercy of turbulence generated by the passage of wind across the clearing.

The National Park encloses the entire range of at least 35 endemic species, more than any other Australian protected area. It is part of the network of habitats of migratory species that Australia must protect under international agreements such as the Japan-Australia Migratory Bird Agreement (JAMBA) and the China-Australia Migratory Bird Agreement (CAMBA).

The Wilderness Society have said, “There are several serious environmental concerns with the selection of this site, not least of which was the selection process itself, the Howard government’s self-exemption from environmental scrutiny normally required under the EPBC Act, and its commitment to best practice environmental measures during construction of the detention centre.”

Research has shown that Abbott’s Boobies nesting within 300 m of clearings experience significantly lower breeding success than birds nesting further away. At last count, 36% of breeding sites across the island were located within this 300 m danger zone.

The centre, under construction since January this year, is not due to be operational until late 2006.

Death toll of Bahrain tourist boat capsizing rises to 57

Saturday, April 1, 2006At least 57 people are now known to have died when a boat designed similar to a traditional dhow capsized one mile of the coast of Bahrain in the Persian Gulf. Seventeen were Indian and a further 13 of the dead are British; people of another six nationalities are also known to have died. The passengers were mostly foreigners from the Nass-Murray and Roberts construction company, and were enjoying an evening dinner cruise in celebration of their completion of part of the Bahrain World Trade Centre towers. Most who died were dining on the lower deck, and were trapped below.

Over 130 people were onboard the boat at the time, although some say the boat was only licensed to carry 120. Others say the limit was 150. Eyewitnesses say the boat was overloaded. The boat capsized in calm seas soon after it left, trapping many below. Helicopters from the US Navy searched for 13 missing persons until Friday morning, when the search was called off. The dhow had been modified to have an extra, higher deck making the vessel less stable. The exact cause is unknown – suggestions from eyewitnesses include the boat suddenly turning left, being hit by a wave, and many of the passengers moving to one side of the boat together. The Bahrain Interior Ministry is to investigate the accident and establish if the boat was seaworthy.
