Cyber attacks in Estonia threaten national security
Thursday, May 17, 2007
Recent cyber attacks in Estonia that have paralyzed the high tech country’s Web sites are a threat to national security, according to the country’s Minister of Defense. This has concerned NATO, seeing that Estonia is a member state of the organization. The attacks have subsided this week.
The Defense Minister Jaak Aaviksoo also mentioned that Russia may have been behind the attacks. He stated that the IP numbers in the initial attack belong to Russian government offices, but says that it’s insufficient evidence that the government is behind it. The Kremlin is dismissing the accusations, saying that its caused by hackers producing fake Kremlin IP addresses.
The cyber attacks came after Estonia removed a Soviet-era statue of a Bronze Soldier in Tallinn, which angered many Russians. Riots have left 160 injured, and 1 dead.
Both NATO and the European Union views this as an attack on one of their member states. Three hundred Estonian IT specialist worked day and night to fix the problem.
The Estonian government plans to analyze server logs and data to find out who is behind the attacks.

Cremation is A Good Alternative
by
Paula Adams
At times accepting death as a part of life can be very difficult because losing someone special can change the meaning of our life. However we must come to terms with it, as it is something that cannot be avoided. Despite the loss of a beloved, one has to get the body buried or cremated.
Cremation is the procedure of reducing deceased human bodies into basic chemical compounds in the form of bone fragments. The process is conducted through vaporization and high temperature.
If you want, you can bury the cremation remains in a traditional cemetery or other approved site. Usually the ashes are scattered, but there are people who prefer the ashes to be placed in an urn. Cremation urns are containers, where people can place the ashes of the loved ones that can be buried or kept at home as a remembrance. The urns are available in various sizes and types such as, companion urns, individual urns, keepsake jewelry urns and keepsake urns. Some of them are specially crafted for children, with attractive patterns and vibrant colors.
Cremation urn jewelry is studded with precious diamonds and gems. It comes in various shapes and sizes; you can get one in the shape of a pendant and wear it on a chain. Many people decide to get rings crafted with incredible designs that are kept in attractive cases. There are specially designed urns for pets because for most, they are just like part of the family. There are several companies that offers personalized cremation urns. You can even get an astonishing state-of-art 3D imaging, by simply producing a picture of your beloved. So now you can keep the memory of your loved ones intact.
Today more and more people are opting for cremation because the cost of cremation can be much smaller in comparison to traditional burial services. The entire process is considered to be highly respectful and dignified, and is executed under extremely stern regulation. First the departed is placed in an incinerator, and then all the belongings along with jewelry are kept on the body. The casket is closed and the process of cremation starts with the permission of the medical examiner. High flame is used to burn the body, after the process is completed; extra flames are used to break down the remains. The body is removed after the incinerator gets cooled. The entire process takes around two hours.
Cremation is performed by special crematory operator who takes care of the documentation and handles the equipment. The designated funeral director along with the family members, plan the services and sign the permission for the rituals. When the service is over, the cremated ashes are put in a container, or special urn, if one was purchased and given to the family member or friend to take home or wherever.

Ukrainian ship MV Faina with cargo of tanks freed by pirates
Thursday, February 5, 2009
Pirates in Somalia have released the MV Faina, a Ukrainian ship carrying a cargo of 33 T-72 tanks, along with 20 of its crew of 21, the Russian captain having been killed by hypertension during the hijack.
A ransom of US$3.2 million was paid for the ship’s release, compared to the $20 million previously demanded and also down from the initial request for $35 million after the capture in September. By January 16 the ransom sought was $5 million, with negotiations occurring directly between the pirates and the ship’s owner. In October the pirates threatened to blow the ship up unless this was paid within days, and stated they were willing to die and take the crew with them, but this threat was never carried out.
The ransom came in on Wednesday, and after counting the money the pirates left the vessel on Thursday. One pirate, Segule Ali, said of the payment that “no huge amount has been paid, but something to cover our expenses.”

The ownership of the cargo, which includes ammunition, rocket launchers, small arms and spare parts as well as tanks, is uncertain. Although the shipment was said to be for Kenya, as acknowledged by the Kenyan government, the pirates claim to have documents proving they were destined for Sudan, currently the subject of a United Nations arms embargo. Sudan denies this.
At one point, with the ship anchored off Harardhere, the pirates claimed they had put down an attempted revolt by the crew. However, the Faina’s owner has expressed doubts about the veracity of this report, which originated with the pirates themselves.
The remaining crew are reported to be healthy by the Ukrainian Presidency and the ship is now heading to Mombasa under US Navy escort. There are 17 Ukrainians, two Russians and a Latvian on board.
Fall ’08 styles at New York Fashion Week: the miniskirt is back again
Sunday, February 3, 2008
The first two days of New York Fashion Week have debuted fashions similar to past years. Since Friday’s opening of what is the world’s largest fashion show, many designers have unveiled their newest designs. These include turtleneck sweaters and miniskirts. However, the ubiquitous fashion staple seen on the runway has been incorporated in designs that are even shorter than in past years.
Major labels Nicole Miller, Lacoste, BCBG, and Baby Phat debuted their styles in the first two days of the week-long extravaganza, nominally the official unveiling of the Fall 2008 styles and leading up to similar fashion shows in Los Angeles, London, Paris and Milan. If the first two days of Fashion Week are any indication, another year of miniskirts are in vogue, partnered with tights, which were widely expected to go out of fashion for 2008.
Day one kicked off with a Red Dress Campaign fashion show, aimed at educating people on the dangers of heart disease. Among the celebrities to walk in red gowns for the Red Dress fashion show were Rita Moreno and Liza Minnelli.
Talk of a budding recession in the United States has sparked fears in the couture world, in which a lackluster fashion season can make or break many designers, both up-and-comers and established names. New York designer Nanette Lepore has led the charge to save money by only debuting two different collections a year.
New York Fashion Week runs until Friday. Designers yet to unveil their fall lines include Oscar de la Renta, Anna Sui, Bill Blass, Michael Kors, Vera Wang, and Diane von Fürstenberg.

Today as automation has taken over almost every department of business operations, the HR department is not far behind. The new age advanced HRMS software available in the market today are designed to automate every HR task to save the time and efforts of the HR personnel and at the same time, boost efficiency and productivity of HR department. Digital HRMS, Pocket HRMS, Keka and Beehive HRMS are good examples. Having said that, HRMS is perhaps the most data intensive software in organisations today. In such a scenario, it becomes extremely important for organisations to ensure optimum protection of data from breaches, external threats and vulnerabilities of all sorts. HRMS advanced security features are thus, extremely essential for ensuring protection of employee data within the organisation.
There are several threats to human resource data in today’s world. To begin with, more and more HRMS software are now hosted on the Cloud, to make way for applications and on-the-go access. The rise in the popularity of enterprise mobility has taken things a step further, as now employees access HRMS software on the mobile devices of all kinds, including smartphones, tablets and laptops. Even as more and more employees access HRMS software on their very own devices, there is the risk of malware and other threats creeping into the application. After all, the more number of devices on the network, the higher the chances of threats creeping in. This is the reason enterprise mobility has resulted in stricter security measures in enterprises across the globe.
The fact that not many people are aware of the consequences of compromise in data security, means the stakes are high. Surprisingly, a significant amount of data breaches happening in organisations across the globe, are directly or indirectly a result of employee activity. This calls for the need for an initiative to raise awareness about information security in organisations today. Also, controlled access and role based access to information is a good measure to prevent misuse of sensitive information.
Talking about HRMS advanced security features, here is a quick look at what can be expected from the new age HR software that the organisations are investing in today.
Key Features of New Age HRMS Software
- Encryption of user data
- GDPR Compliance
- SSL certification
- Physical data security
- Role based access to data
- Measures against unauthorised access
- Controlled access
- Internal security controls
- Strict password policy
- Data purging policy
- IP based access restrictions
- Antivirus and firewall
As cybercrimes continue to rise, there is an ever increasing need to step up when it comes to information security in organisations. As data is being gathered from different sources, there is a very high possibility of threats and malware linked to this data, being transferred into the system of the organisation. This can prove to be highly damaging and the consequences can be disastrous.
Hence, it’s high time the enterprises woke up to the seriousness of the situation. There is the urgent need to take concrete steps for complete security of HR and employee information. Advanced HRMS security features are a must-have if organisations want complete protection of information that they have stored and maintained in the database.
The good news is that the new age HRMS software that one finds in the market today, have these HRMS advanced security features built in, so all that the enterprises need to do is get one such software and use it to the maximum potential.
