Wikinews finds citizens’ feelings, actions throughout Texas regarding West Nile virus threat vary greatly

Monday, August 27, 2012

Wikinews spoke to several residents of the US state of Texas finding varying opinions, and responses, to the threat from the West Nile virus; this, in contrast to the troubling media reports released recently. The state as a whole has seen more than 400 confirmed instances of the illness so-far this year.

A Longview woman, said, “[…] It’s terrifying. I’m so scared.” The woman was quick to point out a virus-related death occured in her city the same day. When asked about her daily routines, in light of the virus, she said, “I don’t go outside. I stay indoors. West Nile [virus] is bad.” The Director of Nursing for a large encampment located near Tyler said their operation had seen no cases of the illness, despite serving over 19,000 campers this summer. Her staff took no special precautions during August.

Although having some worries, Jimmy Philmont, 39, of Fairfield told Wikinews, “[…] I don’t let it keep me up at night. Overall, I’m not too scared.” Asked if he was aware of recent virus-related deaths in Texas, Philmont said, “Yeah, I am. That’s kind of scary. But, you have to live your life, you know? The world is hot now. You can’t go hide in a hole somewhere.” Earlier in the month, Tim Whitley, a city official in Malakoff, told Wikinews his city had began using a pesticide specialist to spray twice-weekly. Whitley explained two treatments per week is more often than usual for the city, “With the concerns in Dallas, we’re taking it seriously”, he said.

A nurse at a senior activity center in Austin told media she’d taken time to educate their facility’s clients about the virus and proper precautions; Adding, “They feel less alarmed and we try to protect our folks here […]”. Mark Kitsmore, 54, of Tyler said, “Honestly, I’m not too worried about it.” He jokingly commented, “I’ve probably used a little more bug spray over the past few weeks, though.”

Twenty-six people have died so-far this year as result of having contracted the virus, approximately half occurring in Texas. The mayor and county judge in Dallas have declared a state of emergency in response to the virus.

Time To Take The Advertising Plunge

by

Donald N. Lombardi

So now that you have taken that one step forward and set up your own work from home business, you are ready to take the plunge. You are thinking about how best to make individuals attentive to your products and services and get them to come to you, while you not lose money and sleep over it.

There are many ways and avenues to promote your work from home business, be it through conventional advertising or through the new age advertising on the Internet.Standard Advertising – The foremost conventional form of propagating your business is thru “Word of Mouth”. It does not cost a penny and all that you have to do is speak to individuals and make them get your product. Once they are doing that, and love your product or service, others will automatically follow and come back to you. Added to this method are the typical strategies like using the newspaper or radio as a medium to advertise your product.Internet Advertising – The Web these days has turned out to be the most cost effective and therefore the fastest way to advertise. But, one ought to forever bear in mind to test their internet selling efforts. This means that one ought to not advertise simultaneously but should do so in blocks. The advantage here is that one will gauge how abundant the advertising is giving back to their business and whether the medium works for them or not.Produce your own Web site – This is often the most effective method you will use for your business. You just have to place all your information on the web site and ideally provide a link. Since it is your own web site, you can create links and make it interactive and fascinating to look at so as to draw in a lot of customers. However, one should forever keep in mind to update any changes in the merchandise or business itself that will be of interest to the consumers. You should also be mindful to not having your consumers suffer delays in obtaining services or products.Free Internet Directories – These are literally free for you to register and have fantastic clicks! Simply register your domain name, product or services for free and watch folks flooding you with mails for additional details on shopping for your product.Share the House – Shared internet advertising is a comparatively new concept; the sole hitch being that your product or service needs to be well defined enough to be differentiated from others. Say for instance if you are within the business of teaching on-line French courses, anyone visiting or looking for French courses will have an automatic access to your link.Another technique is to join up with individuals who sell similar merchandise and have their ads on your site and yours on their site.Banners, Blogs, Social Network Sites – Put up a colorful banner or an animated series to attract attention. Produce blogs and post them on directories and search links. Be there on Facebook and other social networking websites. They work wonders, specially the networking websites. You can have your own community and have people joining you. This could result in you throwing a get together through a sale that will have your product fly off the racks! The options are innumerable with a work from home business. But one wants to very careful and persevere checking the result that comes from the advertising. It is to be sustained and tactically so that the cash that you really put to promote your product and services comes back to you in value 10 times over what you have got invested. Happy advertising!!

Too Grimm? Mother Goose cartoonist sued by Colombian coffee growers

Sunday, January 11, 2009

While it was just a joke, the Federación Nacional de Cafeteros de Colombia doesn’t find a recent “Mother Goose and Grimm” comic terribly funny.

In what the coffee growers association calls “an attack on national dignity and the reputation of Colombian coffee,” the characters in a comic strip by Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Mike Peters call into question the relationship of Colombian coffee growers and the crime syndicates of Columbia.

The cartoonist is being sued not only for “damages [to] the intellectual heritage” of the coffee, but also “moral compensation. A public manifestation,” to the tune of $20 million.

At the start of a week-long series of strips, a dog character named “Ralph” finds out that part of chemist and food storage technician Fred Baur‘s remains was buried in a Pringles can, upon his last wishes. Baur’s best known innovation, among multiple, was the patented can and packing method for the Pringles potato chip. The character theorizes what other remains might be interred in their food packaging. Eventually, the dog states that “when they say there’s a little bit of Juan Valdez in every can, maybe they’re not kidding.”This play on an old advertising slogan refers to fictional character Juan Valdez, created by the Federación Nacional.

In a statement Peters says:

I had no more thought to insult Colombia and Juan Valdez than I did Pringles, Betty Crocker, Col. Sanders, Dr. Pepper and Bartles & Jaymes. The cartoon is meant to be read along with the rest of the week as a series of which the theme is based on the fact that the inventor of the Pringles can had his ashes buried in one.

I thought this was a humorous subject and all of my Mother Goose & Grimm cartoons are meant to make people laugh. I truly intended no insult.

Julio Cesar Gonzalez, El Tiempo newspaper’s famous cartoonist, told the BBC that the lawsuit is “a real waste of time.”

In 2006, the Federación Nacional sued Café Britt over their advertising campaign titled “Juan Valdez drinks Costa Rican coffee. In a counter-suit, Britt presented an affidavit from a Costa Rican man named “Juan Valdez”, acknowledging that he drinks Costa Rican coffee, and that the name is too generic to be exclusive. A variety of legal challenges and charges from both sides were eventually dropped. The phrase was actually first used in a 1999 speech by Jaime Daremblum, then-Costa Rican ambassador to the United States.

Mother Goose and Grimm appears in over 800 newspapers worldwide; Peters has won the Pulitzer for his editorial cartoons for the Dayton Daily News. Thirty years ago, his editorial cartoon about electricity prices featured Reddy Kilowatt, an electricity generation spokescharacter. The Daily News defended that comic image in the United States Supreme Court, winning on the basis that “the symbol was not selling a product”, and thus the satire was legally permissible.

Peters drinks Colombian coffee.

Ukraine opposition candidate Yushchenko is suffering from a Dioxin intoxication, doctors say

Saturday, December 11, 2004

VIENNA –Doctors from the Rudolfinerhaus clinic in Vienna say “there is no doubt” Ukrainian opposition leader Victor Yushchenko was poisoned with Dioxin.

Yushchenko’s body had about 1,000 times more than the normal concentration of the toxin. It is unknown if there were any other poisons in his system.

Although it has not yet been proven that the poisoning was deliberate, doctors suspect it was. “We suspect a cause triggered by a third party,” said Michael Zimpfer, head doctor at the Rudolfinerhaus clinic. He suggested the poison may have been administered orally, through food or drink.

Today’s announcements are a follow-up of an earlier press conference, where Dr. Korpan that there were three hypotheses under consideration, one of them involving dioxin. He did not reveal what the other two hypotheses were. Dr. Michael Zimpfer, director of the Rudolfinerhaus clinic emphasized that time there was no proof yet to specify the substance causing the illness.

Yushchenko left Kiev on Friday (2004-10-12) for further examination in Vienna. When Yushchenko fell ill on October 6th, Ukrainian doctors had initially diagnosed food poisoning, leading to speculation that he had been poisoned deliberately. The illness has disfigured Yushchenko’s body and face which doctors say could take up to two years to heal.

He fell seriously ill on the September 6th, during his presidential campaign. Yushchenko was taken to the Rudolfinerhaus clinic of Vienna, where he stayed for four days under Dr. Korpan’s care. He was diagnosed with “acute pancreatitis, accompanied by interstitial edematous changes.” These symptoms were said to be due to “a serious viral infection and chemical substances which are not normally found in food products” as his campaign officials put it. In laymans terms, he developed an infection in the pancreas and got a bad skin condition that disfigured his face with cysts and lesions. The skin condition has similarities with the chloracne associated with dioxin posioning according to a British toxicologist John Henry.

Earlier, doctor Nikolai Korpan of Rudolfinerhaus clinic confirmed today that the illness of Ukrainian presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko was caused by an attempt to kill him.

Belgian bus company knows solution for car parking problems

Monday, May 21, 2007

Do you have a hard time finding a parking space? Take the bus or tram if you go to the city. That’s the message Belgian bus company De Lijn (The Line) is sending to promote public transport as a solution for car parking problems. As a part of their media campaign, they have jokingly suggested that people use the top of the busses as parking space.

Another idea they are using in their media campaign: maybe you could park your car on the bottom of a canal? The bus company is using an invented diving company called Cardive, which has divers that offer to dump your car in the canal. The divers walk around in cities and hand out free bus tickets and maps of the bus network.

To reach car drivers who are not using public transport, the media campaign has several radio commercials that present other solutions to the car parking problem. You could use “asphalt-spray” to camouflage your car, making it invisible for policemen (although you then need to remember where you’ve parked). Or you could use the “flat tire kit”, which comes with a fake flat tire and an inflatable dummy, so it looks like you’re replacing your flat tire. The final idea the bus company has is to use a View-Master to fool parking guards into believing that your car has been stationed correctly.

A survey among 4000 customers of De Lijn shows that two out of three car owners who use public transport, do so to avoid parking space troubles, and in cities this percentage rises to 90%. The survey further shows that 39% use the bus to go shopping.

During the month of May, the auto-bus and the divers tour several cities in Flanders (Leuven, Hasselt, Ghent, Bruges and Antwerp).

Several groups seek to purchase Saturn auto brand

Thursday, May 7, 2009

Penske Automotive Group, Inc., an Ohio-based investment group and Telesto Ventures have indicated separately that they are interested in purchasing the Saturn auto brand from General Motors (GM).

According to The Wall Street Journal, Nissan-Renault is interested in purchasing Saturn. Bloomberg, however, indicated that Nissan-Renault may be a partner of Penske’s potential bid. If Penske acquired the brand, they would distribute Saturn vehicles and outsource the assembly.

GM revealed that the Saturn brand along with Saab and Hummer were up for sale when unveiling their restructuring plans to Congress for governmental loans. While the Pontiac brand was originally to be a niche brand, GM had changed their plans recently and decided to eliminate the brand.

Telesto Ventures is an investment group that includes private equity firm Black Oak Partners LLC of Oklahoma City and several Saturn dealerships. Initially, Telesto will purchase Saturn branded cars from GM then act as a general retailer for foreign brands. Telesto is in talks with several foreign manufacturers.

The Ohio group includes many former senior auto company managers plus private financial backers, chemists and engineers who live in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Florida. This group plans to initially purchase cars from GM then purchase existing but closed plants due to automaker restructuring. Additionally, one of the partners indicated a willingness to accept some “legacy” cost in relation to the United Auto Workers. The Ohio group is also pursuing possible loans or other support from national and state governments.

GM is reviewing several offers for Saturn. GM has contracted with S.J. Girsky & Co. to advise them on the sale.

Russian spacecraft Phobos-Grunt falls in Pacific Ocean

Monday, January 16, 2012

The Russian spacecraft Phobos-Grunt fell into the Pacific Ocean some 1,250 kilometers west of Wellington, Chile yesterday after circling in Earth orbit for two months. The spacecraft was designed to retrieve soil samples from the largest moon of Mars, Phobos, but its engines failed and it had remained in Earth orbit ever since.

According to the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos), the spacecraft was in a near-Earth orbit with perigee 113.8 km and apogee 133.2 km at 8.15 p.m. UTC yesterday. It fell into the Pacific ocean around 9.45 p.m.

Predictions had varied on whether any segments would reach the Earth’s surface, and it is still unknown whether any did so. People from New Zealand and London reported sighting the spacecraft glowing bright orange as it passed eastwards.

Russian authorities plan to determine the reasons behind the accident. The failure of the mission is being considered as a major setback in Russia’s interplanetary programme. Vadim Lukashevich, a space expert, commented, “Five and half billion rubles and all the hopes of Russian space science for a revival… today burn up without any glory in the earth’s atmosphere.”

Growing Herbs For Health And Profit

Growing Herbs For Health And Profit by Jason MckinstryIf you want gardening and want to start your own home business, then growing herbs might be a fantastic way to make some extra income. All you need to know is how to grow your herbs and how to sell your herbs – and you are on the way to earning money from doing something that you love.Growing herbs in a garden bed will provide you with more space, so that you can not only grow more herbs, but many different types. However, remember that not all herbs grow well together. Also, some herbs will dominate the garden bed, stopping other herbs from thriving. Like, mint is generally best grown alone and it tends to run wild. In addition you need to consider the best growing conditions of every herb. Some herbs prefer more sun (for example, basil, chives, parsley and coriander), where others are okay in shade (mint, comfrey and lemon balm). Generally, though, most herbs prefer sun to shade. So if you only have the one garden bed, choose the good sunny position to see your herbs thrive. You don’t need to have your entire herbs in the one garden bed, though. You will have more separate garden beds, ensuring that you have the best growing conditions and best companions for each herb. You may also grow your herbs in raised containers. While pots is the most frequent one, take a look around the rubbish in your yard (or at the tip) and you might find some items that can be recycled into useful gardening containers for your herbs. Old baths, tires or polystyrene containers work well. One other benefit to growing herbs in pots is that they can be studied indoors through the colder months.Growing a few herbs in containers on the window ledge will work well even in winter, provided they get enough light and heat. So this means you do not need to stop your gardening the moment the cold months come. Just take your herb home business indoors. When growing herbs inside, do not pick herbs that grow too tall or too wide. Lavender, mint, parsley and thyme are good herbs to grow in indoor containers. Now that you have worked out how to grow your herbs, you will need to choose how to sell them. Farmers’ and cottage markets are an excellent place to grow herbs. You can put up a stall for a small fee. And as they are usually held outdoors, you will have enough room to make all of the herbs you want to sell. Furthermore, people often arrive at most of these markets looking for fresh vegetables or herbs. Buying locally is very trendy at the moment. And there are many people who would much prefer to buy herbs from a local grower when compared to a big chain supermarket. You don’t need to make herbs that look at good as those on supermarket shelves in order for people to prefer your product. Other places that you can try include food coops, school fetes and friends.Don’t limit yourself to just selling fresh herbs either. Many individuals like to buy dried herbs. You may also contact herbalists and health food stores who may decide to use dried herbs within their beauty treatments or natural health products. You may also like to consider trying to make your own products using fresh or dried herbs. Research recipes for herbal massage oils and skin care lotions. This will add value and prestige to your house business – as well as improve your earning opportunities. Another benefit to these type of products is that you are no longer limited by places like school fetes or farmers’ markets. Products like these could be sold online and posted out all over the country. If you make enough goodwill, you might find that many of your customers return again and again. If you do decide to sell online, it would be worth your time in taking a look at getting some professional labels printed off. Nice, pretty bottles also make a good impression.Growing herbs is a fulfilling and satisfying past-time. So why don’t use your gardening skills to earn your cash through doing everything you love. While selling herbs as a home business may seem daunting at first, all it requires is a little bit of thought, creativity and imagination. And then you are well on the way to earning a home business income.Click Here for more info.Article Source: eArticlesOnline.com
