Caroline Kennedy drops bid for New York Senate seat

Thursday, January 22, 2009

Caroline Kennedy, considered to be among the front-runners for the United States Senate seat vacated by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, yesterday withdrew her name from consideration for the seat. New York state Governor David Paterson had been reported as intending to name her as Clinton’s replacement this Saturday.

Caroline Kennedy, the only surviving child of former U.S. President John F. Kennedy, issued a statement at midnight saying she had quit her bid because of “personal reasons”.

A close associate of Kennedy, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, said that the decision was not related to the recent health issues of Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA), Caroline Kennedy’s uncle. The senator suffered a seizure Tuesday while attending a luncheon with the newly inaugurated U.S. President Barack Obama in the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.. He was rushed out of the event in a wheelchair and taken for treatment to Washington Hospital, where he remains. In May 2008 he was diagnosed with brain cancer, which required an operation.

The New York Post has reported that Kennedy withdrew her bid because Paterson was not going to choose her for the position. Citing the anonymous source, the Post said that “her poor performances in media interviews and in private sessions with various officials” is Paterson’s reason for not appointing her to the position. Paterson will reportedly make his decision by Saturday, January 26.

New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo is the highest-profile candidate still up for consideration for the last two years of Clinton’s term. Cuomo, who has not commented on this recent turn of events, was the housing secretary during former President Bill Clinton‘s time in office, and in his current role as attorney general has overseen nation-wide reforms for student loans and participated in limiting Wall Street corporate spending.

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/LA-ND

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to move into Kensington Palace, London

Tuesday, June 7, 2011

British media has reported that Prince William and his recently wedded wife, Kate, are to move their London residence into Kensington Palace, close to Hyde Park.

Two units in the Palace, labeled Apartments 8 and 9, were previously occupied by Prince Charles and Diana, William’s parents, when they married in 1981. Prince William and his brother Prince Harry went to nursery and school nearby. Diana also lived in Kensington Palace after her separation and divorce from Prince Charles.

However, the newlyweds will not live in Apartments 8 and 9, as they are currently being used as office space. They will instead live in a small apartment that was previously occupied by staff. The palace has undergone some renovations, including asbestos removal.

The couple is also set to choose one “housekeeper-dresser”, who will provide valet service for the Duchess of Cambridge. Kate will continue to buy her own clothes, and the new servant is not to be seen as a “stylist”. The position has been advertised internally within Buckingham Palace.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expected to move within a few weeks, before they leave on a trip to Canada and the United States. The London residence is expected to be used only as a starter home for about a year. The couple will keep their permanent residence without personal staff in Anglesey, Wales, where William serves on the Royal Air Force as a search-and-rescue pilot. They will continue to run their Household Office at St James’s Palace.

Public Schools Vs. Private Schools: Which Is Right For Your Child?}

Public Schools vs. Private Schools: Which is Right For Your Child?

by

Derek TansThis hot debate may not be ending anytime soon. When children reach the school-going age, parents are usually torn between the types of schools that their children should attend. This is unlike in the past where most parents chose convenience over anything else. They used to take their children to the nearest school. Nowadays, the quality of education matters and that’s why a good percentage of parents in Singapore are thinking about switching their children either from private to public schools and vice versa.Today’s world is so dynamic, and when it comes to choosing schools, parents look beyond convenience. Some of the key areas that they focus on include quality, curriculum, accountability and teachers’ training. With these and many other factors, the difference between a private kindergarten and a public school in Singapore is not that big as it used to be. However, you still need to do some soul-searching and research before you decide on a school for your child. To help you with the comparison, here are some main advantages of both public and private schools. By comparing them, it will be much easier to make a final decision on the type of school that your child should go to.Advantages of Public Schools1. Have more qualified teachersSince public schools are directly controlled by the government, they tend to employ more qualified teachers as compared to those working in private schools. There is also a likelihood of these teachers being more experienced in the job. It is common to find a teacher who has a degree or even masters teaching in a public school. Keep in mind that public schools don’t carry the burden of paying highly trained and experienced teachers. They are paid by the government. They are likely to stick to public schools due to the perks that they get.2. Public schools focus on core subjectsStudents in public schools spend more time studying core subjects. Since they are controlled by external forces, these schools do not deviate to other subjects but instead stick to teaching the main subjects which are English, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies.3. Diverse student populationDue to its affordability, public schools attract a large number of students from different backgrounds. This is unlike private schools which are quite expensive. Public schools give your child a perfect opportunity to interact with other people and learn more about them.Advantages of private schools1. Small classesIt is a fact that any private kindergarten has small classes. The number of students per classroom can be half of that in public school. This automatically means that the student to teacher ratio is small. This allows a teacher to give each child more attention and encourages dissemination of high-quality and student-oriented education.2. Flexible curriculumPrivate schools are flexible when it comes to choosing a curriculum that students use. They do not have to wait for approval from other bodies. In most cases, their curriculums focus on overall development of a person, both academically and intellectually. Some private kindergarten schools offer programs that meet international standards or prepare students for a global environment.3. Strong parent involvementPrivate schools encourage parents to be heavily involved in the affairs of their children. As a parent, you will always be communicating with teachers and communicate matters relating to the performance and progress of your child.VerdictChoosing your child’s school is one of the biggest decisions that you will make. There should be no room to make any mistakes. A good school guarantees your child high-quality education and will leave a positive impact towards your child’s development process. Before you choose a school, first understand personal needs of your child then analyze whether the school will meet them.Derek Tan writes articles relating to education. An account of the Esperanza Fire from an animal rescuer

Saturday, December 2, 2006

As families fled their homes in the early morning hours on Thursday October 26, there was no warning. The Esperanza Fire southeast of Los Angeles and West of Palm Springs, California, had ballooned under the influence of Santa Ana winds to more than 19,000 acres as of the morning of October 27. No time to get the animals, no time for crates or even a leash. Sadly, owners left behind not only their horses, lamas, donkeys, chickens, rabbits, but also their dogs and cats.

Many of the families who did manage to evacuate their pets found themselves in the parking lot at the Fellowship in the Pass Church Red Cross Shelter where a MuttShack Animal Rescue team caught up with them.

Pam Anderson, Director of the emergency Red Cross shelter said that many people with animals had come and left.

The air was thick with smoke, and ash was raining down on the parking lot where dog owners, not able to take their dogs into the shelter were camping out in pup tents and in their cars.

Those who could afford it checked themselves into pet friendly hotels in nearby towns.

Some were prepared. Jane Garner, a small dog breeder was able to get all her animals out, and had set up her puppy runs alongside her RV in the parking lot. Others were not doing too well, having left home without as much as a leash.

The same scenario played out at the Red Cross shelter at Hemet High School. Animals were being boarded in vans, trailers and cars and small travel crates.

When MuttShack Animal Rescue arrived, a small fracas had sent several dogs off in different directions, running out of the school parking lot down busy streets necessitating an instant rescue response.

The Incident Command for the Esperanza Animals, Ramona Humane Society in San Jacinto welcomed MuttShack‘s offer to help at the shelters.

Ramona Humane Society had recently published a notice in their Newsletter about the newly passed “PETS Act” and warned owners not wait until a major disaster such as an earthquake or fire to prepare. “Be proactive to ensure that your pet will be taken care of.”

MuttShack and PetSmart Charities set up ad hoc facilities for the animals at both shelters.

The Red Cross shelter, run by Madison Burtchaell of the Orange County Red Cross was very accommodating about allowing a small emergency pet shelter adjacent to the School.

Barbara A. Fought of PetSmart Charities, an organization that works with animal welfare organizations and provide assistance in disasters, provided crates and emergency supplies.

MuttShack and Red Cross volunteers, Martin St. John, Tom Hamilton, and Steve Meissner helped assemble the crates to secure a safe environment for evacuated pets.

It was a great relief for evacuees who had camped out in the parking lot to finally leave their vehicles and relax at the shelter, setting up their cots to grab some sorely needed rest.

Firefighters and residents reported loss of wildlife and animals. The Esperanza fire burned 34 homes, consumed 40,000 acres and cost five Firefighters their lives before it was contained four days later on October 30. Firefighting operations cost nearly $10 million.

MuttShack Animal Rescue is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization active in disasters and dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and care of lost or discarded dogs, cats and other animals.

Bush EPA nominee abandons insecticide-on-children study after Senate hearing

Saturday, April 9, 2005

Following a Senate hearing in which the Bush administration’s nominee for EPA administrator, Stephen Johnson, stoutly defended his plan to pay parents to document the effects on infants of insecticide use in the home, he reversed course and stopped the program.

Among the original requirements for the 60 families requested to be participants in the “Children’s Health Environmental Exposure Research Study” (CHEERS) study according to EPA were that they must:

  • Live in Duval County, Florida
  • Be a parent of a child under the age of 13 months
  • Spray or apply or have pesticides sprayed or applied inside your home on a routine basis (You do not need to change your regular household routine for the study.)

This original version of the requirements can be viewed in the Internet Archive, a free online repository that creates copies of websites on a regular basis. The third requirement was reworded by November 2004, according to the Internet Archive: “Maintain your normal pesticide or non-pesticide use patterns for your household. We will not ask any parent to apply pesticides in their home to be a part of this study.”

According to the above document, the area of Jacksonville/Duval County was chosen for reasons of existing year-round high usage of pesticides and other household chemicals within the home, as well as relevant data from existing prior studies. The study involved researchers visiting the home of participants, parents videotaping their children’s activities with a supplied camcorder, children wearing a small “activity sensor”, and parents collecting food and urine samples for detailed analysis of the effects of chemical exposure to common commercially available chemicals, primarily pesticides, on which “current information… is very limited” [1].

Selection for the study began in fall 2004. As incentives for their participation in the planned two-year study, parents were to be given $970, a t-shirt, and other gifts, and would have kept the video camera at its conclusion.

Complaining that the study was necessary, Johnson yielded to two Democratic Senators who had threatened to block him, using all means available, from officially taking the helm of the Environmental Protection Agency, of which he is the acting head. The block on his nomination was lifted afterwards although some Democratic Senators would not say how they would vote on the final nomination.

Under his guidance, the EPA agreed to accept $2 million for the controversial $9 million CHEERS study from an industry trade group, the American Chemistry Council, which represents the chemical insecticide manufacturers. The study was to be conducted with the cooperation of the Duval County Health Department, and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, based in Atlanta.

Senators Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Bill Nelson, (D-FLA), demanded the cancellation of the study as proof of Johnson’s acknowledgement of what she called a “gross error in judgment”.

“The CHEERS program was a reprehensible idea that never should have made it out of the boardroom, and I am just happy that it was stopped before any children were put in harms way,” Boxer said. She added that testing on humans should not be a part of any United States environmental policy.

“I am very pleased that Mr. Johnson has recognized the gross error in judgment the EPA made when they concocted this immoral program to test pesticides on children,” Boxer said.

Work on the study was halted last November by Johnson while an independent review of the study’s design was conducted at his request. Part of the reason for the study’s current cancellation was what the EPA in its press release has termed “mischaracterization” of the nature of the study as though children were being deliberately sprayed with pesticides.

Johnson defended his approach, “I have concluded that the study cannot go forward, regardless of the outcome of the independent review. EPA must conduct quality, credible research in an atmosphere absent of gross misrepresentation and controversy. I am committed to ensuring that EPA’s research is based on sound science with the highest ethical standards.”

In November 2004, William Farland, an administrator with the EPA’s research department, told The Oregonian, “There’s no suggestion that we are asking them to use pesticides. We simply want them to continue to carry out their day-to-day activities.”

California public school requires RFIDs on students

Saturday, February 12, 2005

Sutter, CA –An elementary school in northern California has been testing a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag-based identification program on its 7th and 8th grade students since January 18th, 2005. According to the ACLU, this is the first time that public school students in the United States have been required to wear devices that enable automatic identification. RFIDs have previously been used to track students in Japan.

RFID tags contain antennas to enable them to receive and respond to radio-frequency queries from an RFID transceiver, enabling identification of pupils when they are in the vicinity of the detectors.

Each student is required to wear an ID card on a lanyard around their neck. An RFID tag, manufactured by local Sutter corporation Incom, is attached to the card. The school has installed RFID detectors at the doors of seven classrooms as well as the bathrooms, though they claim that the bathroom units were not turned on, and subsequently been removed after complaints from parents.

While some parents have complained about the system, local high school teacher Tim Crabtree told the San Francisco Chronicle, “It’s baffling why so many people are bothered by the district being able to tell them where their kids are at,”

On the other side, the San Francisco Chronicle quotes the 13-year-old daughter of Michelle and Jeff Tatro as saying:”Look at this. I’m a grocery item. I’m a piece of meat. I’m an orange.” Another couple in Sutter, Michael and Dawn Cantrall, filed a complaint with the American Civil Liberties Union, or ACLU. The complaint centered on the violation of privacy and concerns about safety.

Marlin Fishing In Cabo San Lucas &Amp; How Do You Fish Marlin?}

Marlin Fishing in Cabo San Lucas & How Do You Fish Marlin?

by

Greg Arizpe

When youre in Cabo San Lucas for Marlin fishing adventure, you should know how exactly the fishing is done.

How Can Be Fishing Performed in Cabo San Lucas –

If youre a first-timer and never gone for deep sea fishing in Cabo, you should read this post carefully beforehand. However, around 99.9% fishing in Cabo is done using trolling. However, trolling is a simple method that involves the boat pulling lines behind with lures, teasers and live bait to attract fish.

Some boats will have as much as six lines in the water simultaneously. Even some of the lines are very close to the back part of the boat and some of them are trolling dredges or teasers that are specifically designed to attract fish to the surface so that they can bite on other lines with live bait or trolling lure.

Again, you might have fished in many parts of the world or watched TV shows where the boats are anchored, lines are dropped to complete the fishing process. But this is not the case for Marlin fishing in Cabo San Lucas. Even inshore fishing can be done by simply trolling. This is even the most effective way to catch fish in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

When fish bite, you will able to listen to the line scream from the drag on the wheel. It will get the crew in motion right away. Then, the mate will grab the pole and set the hook on the fish using a solid tug. After that, you will be handed a pole and you are the one on one with the fish on the line

While fishing, you may choose to stand and fight or sit in the fighting chair. In fact, the mate will help you, if you are a first-timer and might say reel and pull. Again, if you want to stand up, you can ask for a belt or harness from the crew as all the boats have them on board.

However, its quite difficult to know sometimes what type of fish or size is on the line. But the mate might make adjustments to set the reel and help you land the fish. When youre on with a huge fish and don’t want to keep fighting, the crew will be happy to take over or you can hand over the pole to others.

Remember, landing a fish is not a much easy task as the fish get away often. You just enjoy the fight, take your time and rest assured that the professional crew is ready to help you with your Marlin fishing in Cabo San Lucas.

Most of the crews use fluorocarbon leaders that are specially designed for offshore fishing adventure are quite similar to the ordinary fishing line and are meant to create more strikes.

When fishing in Cabo San Lucas, you can set your own hook. You just let the crew know that you would like to set your own hooks and they will set hooks to give the perfect chance to land the fish. Please keep in mind that, improper setting of the hook is the best reason for losing fish. Even seeking help from an inexperienced mate can be the reason to lose fish during or before a fight.
