Dorothy’s dress from Wizard of Oz sells for £140,000

Wednesday, April 27, 2005

The auction hammer came down Wednesday, in London, on Judy Garland’s blue gingham dress, worn in the 1939 movie “The Wizard of Oz.” It sold for £140,000 (about US$262,157.40).

The identity of the buyer, who sealed the deal on the telephone, was not immediately revealed. Bonham auctioneers told reporters there was a pre-sale estimate of £35,000 (about US$65,529.47).

The dress, one of the most recognizable in the movie world, was made for the 17-year-old Garland who had a 27-inch (68-centimetre) waist. Her name is still on a tag on an inside hem. It was auctioned as part of a sale of rock and film memorabilia and was described as a “cherished memory for millions of fans worldwide.”

The story of the “Wizard of Oz,” which sealed Garland’s legend as a worldwide star, tells the story of a young Kansan, Dorothy (Judy Garland) and her dog Toto. They are whisked away from their rural Kansas home by a tornado to a magical realm called OZ.

In their travels, they meet other now-famous characters, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion.

Although the film started with only modest success, it has since become a screen classic.

Connect With The World At A Faster Pace Through Network Cabling Installation}

Connect with the world at a faster pace through network cabling installation

by

VRS Technologies

Cabling framework in office or home is a basic segment of the entire network. Appropriate arrangements, installation and support of this framework can positively carry an organization’s smooth operations. Network cables are the equipment used to link one network device with other or to connect two or more PCs to share scanner, printer and so on. Distinctive sorts of networking cables like optical fiber link, coaxial link, twisted pair links are utilized relying upon the system’s topology, size and protocol. The devices may be kept at distance of a couple meters by means of Ethernet or far away by means of the interconnections of the Internet. For connecting larger computer networks permanently, network cabling installation is a must that facilitates signals to travel from one node to another.

Which type of network cables can be installed?

There are majorly five types of cables and you should have a clear understanding of the purpose before installing them:

1.Twisted pair cabling is a type of wiring, where pairs of wires are twisted together so as to cancel out the interference of electro-magnetic waves that is produced from other wire pairs or outside resources. This type of cable is suitable for home and corporate Ethernet networks.

2.Optical fiber cable has a center glass core which is surrounded by many layers of special material for protection. It offers higher bandwidth and can cover longer distances.

3.Coaxial cable lines confine the electromagnetic wave inside the cable in between the shield and the conductor and can therefore be twisted up to certain limits without inducing unwanted currents in them. These can be used for transmitting TV signals and high-speed home networking applications.

4.Patch cable can be an optical or electrical cable which is used to connect two optical or electronic devices or to create an infrastructure for signal routing. Devices such as a switch connected to a computer or a switch connected to a router can be connected with patch cables.

5.Power cables combined with new technologies like Power line communication are used to connect peripherals or interconnect home computers or other networking devices.

How to install a network cable in Dubai and UAE?

If you are residing or planning to shift to UAE or looking for network cabling installation for your organization – here is how you go about it:

Look for the service providers in your area and your requirement.

Once you have chosen for a service provider, browse about the packages it provides.

These days, all-in-one packages are in great demand in which you get cabling for internet, television and landline all together, but you are free to choose as per your requirement.

Apply for the connection, fill in the details and furnish all the documents like Emirates ID Card as the ID proof or UAE Residence Visa.

Once all the formalities are done, the network cable will be installed in no time.

Large creature loose in London suburb

Tuesday, March 22, 2005

Police organized a search in the Sydenham Park area of south-east London after a local, Anthony Holder, was attacked by a 6ft long black animal while looking for his kitten in his back yard that borders a woodland.

Holder said the animal pounced, knocked him to the ground, and then he was “in its claws for about 30 seconds. Its teeth were out and I tried to defend myself and eventually I got the thing off my body.” Holder was scratched all over his body and suffered swelling and bruising to his hand and the back of his head. He called the police at about 2:15 am while the animal sat in the garden next door.

While Holder was being treated by paramedics, the Metropolitan Police conducted a search of the area. A citizen and a police officer saw the creature, believed by some to be a panther. Another officer also believed he saw the animal and reports it as approximately the size of a Labrador Retriever. The neighbourhood is being patrolled by an armed police response vehicle staffed by officers equipped with rifles and Taser stun guns.

Scotland Yard is currently seeking specialist advice from experts from the RSPCA and London Zoo. A spokeswoman said: “We are trying to establish exactly where the animal may have come from. In the meantime we are asking the public to be vigilant. If anyone does see the animal, do not approach it but dial 9-9-9 immediately.”

People are also being advised to keep pets indoors.

Sightings of big cats have increased in recent years. The notion of a large predator in London was initially dismissed by scientists, but evidence from footprints and droppings has led to other conclusions. The British Big Cat Society estimates 50 to 100 are currently loose across England. Livestock has supposedly been attacked a number of times. Farmers near Burford in Oxfordshire have offered a £5,000 reward for the capture of a large black creature suspected of killing livestock in the area. However, there have been virtually no human encounters.

FOX News previews Grafton Street restaurant and “voice collector” in Harvard Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts

Sunday, May 1, 2005

The FOX Morning News broadcast from Harvard Square this morning in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Anchors Liz Carrigan and Gene Lavanchy profiled a restaurant and a musician who will take part in the 22nd annual Mayfair, which starts on Sunday, May 1. The restaurant, Grafton Street, is on Massachusetts Avenue.

The Mayfair is a festival that takes place in Harvard Square on an annual basis. On Sunday, the Square will be closed from noon until 6 pm to vehicular traffic; according to the Mayfair website, “200 artists and merchants” will participate in the event this year.

The musician, Halsey Burgund, works for a computer security firm, but plays the drums and piano in his spare time. This morning, he had set up his portable recording booth to demonstrate the means by which he records passersby for voice samples in his music. Burgund will have his booth set up on Sunday and hopes to record festival visitors. Eventually, Burgund hopes to release his music under a Creative Commons license. Burgund noted that he previously tried recording people on the street with just a microphone, but he found that there was too much ambient noise for the quality of recording he desired.

Oil price reaches new high

Thursday, May 22, 2008

At US$135 a barrel, the price of oil today reached a new high. BBC News has reported that this recent increase is due to figures showing a large decrease in the US petroleum supply.

However, as of 20:00 UTC prices have fallen nearly two percent since yesterday and are back below $131. Over half of oil executives believe that the price will fall to US$100 a barrel toward the end of the year according to an Associated Press report.

The U.S. average retail price for regular gasoline also recently increased to a new all-time high, with the price going up 6.9 cents to 379.1 cents per gallon. This was the eighth consecutive week for the US average price to increase.Air France-KLM recently said that they would be challenged by the rising oil price. American Airlines has announced thousands of job cuts.

In addition, the U.S. has seen the cost of food rise significantly, an issue which food manufacturers and retail stores blame on the high price of fuel required for transportation. For example, CNN.com reports a 16.7% increase in the cost of hamburger buns, a staple item for many U.S. families.

U.S. presidential candidate Mark Everson challenges debate exclusion

Wednesday, August 5, 2015

U.S. Republican Party presidential candidate Mark Everson, former commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), filed a complaint on Monday with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to challenge his exclusion from Thursday’s first Fox News Republican Party presidential debate. Everson argues his exclusion violates Title 11 of the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations in that debate hosts must not “structure the debates to promote or advance one candidate over another”, and must “use pre-established objective criteria to determine which candidates may participate in a debate.”

Everson served as Commissioner of the IRS from 2003 to 2007, during the George W. Bush administration. After his departure, he briefly served as CEO of the American Red Cross, worked in the cabinet of Indiana governor Mitch Daniels, and worked for the tax consulting firm alliantgroup. He announced his candidacy this past March with a sixteen-page open letter in which he outlined the six pillars of his campaign: amnesty for illegal immigrants, reinstatement of the military draft, a promise to serve only a single presidential term, and calls for tax reform, deficit reduction, and corporate responsibility.

Fox News claims Everson fails to meet the criteria it established for Thursday’s two debates. Only seventeen candidates meet the criteria, which require a candidate “consistently” be included in “recognized” opinion polls. The prime-time event features the top ten candidates by average polling percentage. The other seven participate in a separate debate just before the prime time event.

In his complaint, Everson urges the FEC to compel Fox News to include him in the second tier debate as the eighth participant.

Everson argues Fox News, in violation of Title 11, “structure[d] the debates to promote or advance one candidate over another” through a July 27 change to its criteria that replaced a pre-existing one percent polling threshold with a threshold admitting those “consistently” included in “recognized” polls. He alleges this was done to ensure the inclusion of the low-polling candidates former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, former New York governor George Pataki, Senator Lindsey Graham, and former Virginia governor Jim Gilmore, because Fox News recognizes these candidates as “major players.”

Furthermore, Everson argues the Fox News criteria are not “objective,” as Title 11 requires, because they fail to define the terms “consistently” and “recognized” when referring to polls. He asserts he was included in the Republican Party’s online straw poll in May and is the only candidate still listed on that poll who has been excluded from Thursday’s debate.

Election law expert Richard Winger, publisher of Ballot Access News, says Everson is “completely correct” in his challenge. However, he believes Everson only has a chance of success if he actually files a lawsuit rather than simply complaining to the FEC.

Jawbone found in Aruba is not Natalee Holloway’s

Thursday, November 25, 2010

A jawbone found in Aruba is not that of missing American Natalee Holloway, who was a recent high school-graduate at the time of her disappearance. Officials confirmed the news after Dutch scientists completed tests on the bone. The jawbone, which also had a wisdom tooth with it, was found by an American tourist close to the Phoenix Hotel. A second bone had also been found by another tourist earlier this month.

The bone was sent to the Netherlands Forensic Institute where scientists completed tests. They compared the bone to dental records given to them by Natalee’s father, from which they confirmed the the bone was not that of Natalee, although it was human. It was said to be unlikely that the bone was Holloway’s as there is no physical evidence that she was murdered.

Beth accepts the forensic conclusions, is emotionally exhausted from the inexplicably long wait, and deeply disappointed in the time and manner in which she learned of the results.

Taco Stein, the Aruban Solicitor General, released a statement after the announcement was made. He commented on the speed of the identification; he said that they had quickly ruled out Holloway because her records had shown that she had her wisdom teeth previously removed.

Tim Miller, the Director of the Texas EquuSearch, released a statement after talking to Natalee’s father. He said “Dave [Natalee’s father] has been in contact with Aruban authorities and spoke with FBI this morning, the agent working the case. Dave believes it is Natalee.”

An attorney for Natalee’s mother, Beth Twitty, released a statement saying “Beth accepts the forensic conclusions, is emotionally exhausted from the inexplicably long wait, and deeply disappointed in the time and manner in which she learned of the results.” He commented on the Aruban authorities saying that “Apparently Aruban prosecutors were more sensitive to media concerns than the painful vigil of a mother.”

Natalee Holloway disappeared on the island in 2005 while on a school trip. She was last seen leaving a nightclub with three men, one of which was later identified as Joran van der Sloot. Van der Sloot was detained twice by police but has never been charged with Holloway’s disappearance. He is currently in Peru facing a different murder charge. Aruban authorities have said that they are checking neighboring islands to find a match for other missing persons.

The Uk Plummeted Into White}

Submitted by: Peter Zolcsak

The unpredictability of the English weather has been there for many years down the ages so much so that it has even found its way into many English literary works. The pristine white blanket covering is an image that has become synonymous with English weather or Snow in London. The moment one tries to conjure up an image of the English weather the words that come to one s mind are frost, snow, gales, sleet, icy winds and that alone is enough to make one shiver even if one is sitting in a warm climate.

December 2010 started on a mild note but it wasnt long before the countrys temperature dipped 2 or 3 C below average with widespread snow fall. This continued right through the month making it a picture perfect white Christmas . A good deal of the country had snow right up to the New Year. An unusually early dumping of snow was the start of brutal weather conditions under freezing temperatures causing severe disruption of traffic leaving passengers stranded at airports and stations. With scores of flights cancelled due to poor visibility, Britain faced the heaviest snowfall in last 50 years.

After an unusual spell warm November 2011, temperatures are low and are all set to plunge some areas in snow in a matter of days. A thick cover of fog finally heralds an end to a balmy autumn and a very wintry blistering week or Snow in UK ahead is the general predictions for the winter season across UK.

London does not usually experience a heavy snowfall and if it does it is usually around late January to mid- February As a visitor you are hardly likely to see snow in London. Even if it does snow it is only about an inch and rarely lasts for 2 or 3 days.

Once you are out of London and travel towards north you are likely to witness snowfall in all its glory with the beautiful English countryside covered under thick coat of snow.

It is often said on a lighter note that no 2 days are ever the same in the Midlands.

Birmingham experiences bitter cold and harsh winters. The cold gusts of winds from the Artic and milder ones blowing from the Atlantic meet over the Midlands precipitating rain and due to freezing conditions it turns into snow in UK.

The government has already started its get ready for winter campaign in order to prepare people for winter weather. Keeping in mind the winter of 2010-11 which with a record low temperature had created travel chaos and disruption of normal life. The inclement can bring life to a halt. Thick fog which engulfed the country starting this month heralds a cold severe winter and mild to heavy snowfall in the country. As this piece is being written there is a news flash that U K first snow fell in the South Tyne Valley today but experts and forecasters insist that chances of white Christmas are slim even though it is going to be gloomy frosty English weather once again for UK folks.

General Motors automobile sales plunge by 45%

Wednesday, April 1, 2009

General Motors Corporation (GM) announced on Wednesday that it saw a 45% drop in United States vehicle sales for its cars in March.

Executives from several auto firms, however, said that there was some hope for the auto industry to stabilise, as car sales rebounded in the last week of March.

“The market is starting to show small signs of life which need to be nourished like seedlings,” said the vice president and chairman of Chrysler LLC Jim Press. “It’s too early to see a trend, but spring shows signs of hope.”

Other automobile manufacturers also saw their car sales slip: Chrysler and the Japanese Toyota both reported a 39% loss, whilst Ford Motor Company sales fell 41%.

Annualised sales of vehicles in the car industry in the US are predicted to have dipped below nine million in March, compared to February’s 9.12 million, which was the lowest number since 1981.

“Auto makers are pulling every lever in their effort to attract buyers, as evidenced by the new programs from Ford and GM. The typical incentive programs simply do not resonate in today’s economy,” Jesse Toprak, an analyst for Edmunds.

Ford shares gained 2.3% to a level of US$2.69 in early trading at US stock markets on Wednesday, while stocks for Toyota’s US depository increased 5.9% to $67. GM shares slipped 1.6% down to $1.92.
