Anti-whaling protesters have joined forces across Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, and the U.S.A calling for an end to the killing of whales for meat by Japan. Greenpeace organised the international day of action as it continued its efforts to disrupt the hunting of minke whales by the Japanese whaling fleet currently in the Southern Ocean.

The day of action was being marked to protest the actions of the fleet which protesters believe violate the 1986 International Whaling Commission (IWC) global ban on commercial whaling. Japan’s JARPA Japanese Whale Research Program was allowed to operate under a Special Permit in the Antarctic according to Article VIII of the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling. In its JARPA-2 plan, Japan plans to double its annual scientific research catch of Minke whales to 935, and to add 10 Fin whales to its quota. The International Fund for Animal Welfare states that over the next two years, Japan plans to kill 50 endangered Humpback whales and an additional 40 fin whales.

Ukraine opposition candidate Yushchenko is suffering from a Dioxin intoxication, doctors say

Saturday, December 11, 2004

VIENNA – Doctors from the Rudolfinerhaus clinic in Vienna say “there is no doubt” Ukrainian opposition leader Victor Yushchenko was poisoned with Dioxin.

Yushchenko’s body had about 1,000 times more than the normal concentration of the toxin. It is unknown if there were any other poisons in his system.

Although it has not yet been proven that the poisoning was deliberate, doctors suspect it was. “We suspect a cause triggered by a third party,” said Michael Zimpfer, head doctor at the Rudolfinerhaus clinic. He suggested the poison may have been administered orally, through food or drink.

Today’s announcements are a follow-up of an earlier press conference, where Dr. Korpan that there were three hypotheses under consideration, one of them involving dioxin. He did not reveal what the other two hypotheses were. Dr. Michael Zimpfer, director of the Rudolfinerhaus clinic emphasized that time there was no proof yet to specify the substance causing the illness.

Yushchenko left Kiev on Friday (2004-10-12) for further examination in Vienna. When Yushchenko fell ill on October 6th, Ukrainian doctors had initially diagnosed food poisoning, leading to speculation that he had been poisoned deliberately. The illness has disfigured Yushchenko’s body and face which doctors say could take up to two years to heal.

He fell seriously ill on the September 6th, during his presidential campaign. Yushchenko was taken to the Rudolfinerhaus clinic of Vienna, where he stayed for four days under Dr. Korpan’s care. He was diagnosed with “acute pancreatitis, accompanied by interstitial edematous changes.” These symptoms were said to be due to “a serious viral infection and chemical substances which are not normally found in food products” as his campaign officials put it. In laymans terms, he developed an infection in the pancreas and got a bad skin condition that disfigured his face with cysts and lesions. The skin condition has similarities with the chloracne associated with dioxin posioning according to a British toxicologist John Henry.

US toy retail giant Toys R Us files for bankruptcy in US, Canada

Thursday, September 21, 2017

On Monday night, New Jersey, US-based toy retail giant Toys R Us filed for bankruptcy in the US as well as in Canada. The retailer filed it from Richmond, Virginia for Chapter 11 bankruptcy code in the US, and a judge allowed a loan of over US$2 billion.

According to the filing, the retail chain owns US$6.6 billion in assets, but has a debt of US$7.9 billion. They were under a roughly US$5 billion debt since the company underwent a three-way acquisition in 2005. Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, Bain Capital, and Vornado Realty Trust acquired Toys R Us for around US$7 to US$7.5 billion. After the US judge approved a loan, Toys R Us received about US$3 billion from the lenders to continue the business and survive a competitive market, and restructure their business model. E-commerce giant Amazon.com, Walmart and Target are some of the competitors for the conventional ‘brick and mortar’ toy shop, with lower priced-merchandise and fast, cheap delivery. In a conference call in June, CEO Dave Brandon said “very, very aggressive pricing online” was causing problems. He also said the company was experiencing “significant weakness in demand for their products globally”. Toys R Us are to clear a debt of US$400 million by May 2018.

Toys R Us said they would continue to operate for the holiday season. Bankruptcy lawyer Jeff Gleit said Toys R Us “need to do both a financial restructuring as well as an operational restructuring” and “needs to modernize with the times”. Last holiday season, Toys R Us made sales around US$4.5 billion. Overall, the company reported a US$29 million loss in 2016. CEO Brandon said, “Our objective is to work with our debt holders and other creditors to restructure the US$5 billion of long-term debt on our balance sheet, which will provide us with greater financial flexibility to invest in our business”.

Toys R Us employs more than 60 thousand people in 38 countries around the world in more than 1600 stores. The company’s stocks fell by six percent after filing for Chapter 11 protection. US bankruptcy code Chapter 11 allows the company to restructure under a plan approved by the court. The company would also be shielded from creditors’ claims during the process. For the stores located in Canada, Toys R Us filed bankruptcy in Ontario and are to undergo reorganisation. However, 259 stores located outside the US or Canada will not undergo reorganisation, the company said.

Over 300 US-based retailers have filed for bankruptcy this year, and hundreds of stores closed.

Missing Los Alamos Laboratory documents found in drug bust

Sunday, October 29, 2006

Documents missing from the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico have been found on a USB Flash Drive during a drug bust located inside the Los Alamos trailer park, Royal Crest on October 17 and contain what police say are “classified material.” The drives were marked with symbols that indicated they belonged to the Los Alamos Laboratory.

Los Alamos has since confirmed that a breach has occurred and that at least three computer drives from the laboratory were confiscated during the raid.

“During the course of the search, officers realized that some of the items seized appeared to belong to the Los Alamos National Laboratory,” said a statement by the Los Alamos County Police Department.

A subcontractor, Justin Stone, 20 was involved in the breach of security at the lab and according to Michael Anastasio, the lab’s director, there is an “ongoing investigation.” Stone was working in Technical Area 55, an area of the lab where plutonium is kept or the X Division, where data for the designs of nuclear bombs are kept. Stone says that he was not aware of what the drives contained saying, “I have no idea what’s on it because I didn’t get a chance to look.” Stone also says that he acquired one of the drives a year ago when he traded drugs for the drive and that drive also contained information from Los Alamos Laboratory. Stone had only been living with a female friend, Jessica Quintana for no more than three weeks and was with his girlfriend Jessica Collins when police raided the home.

“I vaguely remember it contained information about nuclear waste sites around Los Alamos. I erased it and used the drive for myself,” added Stone.

Quintana, who also worked in the laboratory as an archivist, was being investigated by the FBI for charges relating to methamphetamine type offenses and was arrested when authorities executed an arrest warrant for the female. Police say a “large amount” of methamphetamine paraphernalia was discovered in her trailer during a raid by the FBI. Pipes with the remains of methamphetamine were also found at the scene and Quintana also admitted that the items belonged to her.

“This is a serious matter, and we are taking immediate steps to address it. We intend to do everything possible to guard against any criminal activity, particularly where a breach of security may be involved. We have already taken a number of steps to address potential security risks,” said Anastasio in a statement.

Drug paraphernalia along with methamphetamine drugs were also seized during the bust. Police were initially responding to a call of a domestic disturbance between Stone and his girlfriend which Stone denies was taking place.

Recording Music At Home

By George Kane

The first thing you are going to need to invest in if you want to build a great home studio these days is a high quality computer with plenty of hard drive space and lots of RAM. Luckily high quality computers are getting less and less expensive. I recently bought a PC with 8GB of RAM for just $800.

After you get your high quality computer (you may already have one that will get the job done) you need DAW software (DAW stands for “Digital Audio Workstation”) that you will be doing your mixing and recording with. The so called “industry standard” is Pro Tools but it’s definitely not the only choice (or necessarily the best choice.)

What you get after that initial purchase of a computer and a DAW really depends on what kind of music you are interested in making. If you want to make entirely electronic music with no recording of vocals or real instruments then you may want to look into various plugins at this point but most people (even those doing mostly electronic music) will want to be able to record vocals and instruments and will need some sort of audio interface.

I should note that many audio interfaces come with a basic DAW program so you can kill two birds with one stone when you buy your audio interface.

So what is an audio interface? To put it in the simplest possible terms, it’s the “in between” between your audio inputs and your computer. Personally I use the E-MU 1616M and I highly recommend it for those on a PC who don’t need a lot of inputs. But there’s really a huge selection of audio interfaces available, it’s too big of a subject to cover in detail. Again the “industry standard” is Pro Tools but that’s not necessarily the best way to go.

Another “must have” for most people is a microphone. A good quality microphone will allow you to record vocals and all sorts of acoustic instruments. It will clearly be a very important part of your home studio. If you can afford it, I would recommend checking out the Shure KSM44. I’ve been using this mic for years and I very highly recommend it.

Your audio interface will have a built in preamp that will be good enough to get you started, but you will likely want to upgrade to an external preamp at some point. One very cool (and very affordable) option is the ART MPA Gold. It allows you to get that sweet “tube” sound for just $300. Plus it gives you two channels to work with. On top of that, many people replace the stock tubes that it comes with and get an even higher quality sound quality by doing so.

Once you get all of this gear you get to the really important part of recording music, learning how to use it! Recording and mixing music can be a pretty complex thing so if you are new to it, I really recommend getting some books on the subject to help you through the growing pains.

Earthquake, tsunami combo caused devastation in Pichilemu, Chile

Thursday, March 4, 2010

Pichilemu, Chile – Last Saturday, Chile was hit by a 8.8 earthquake. Many coastal towns were also hit by a tsunami, and Pichilemu was one of them. Its inhabitants were surprised by the giant waves that destroyed the most of the costanera and that reached the city square.

Pichilemu, that means in Mapudungun language small forest, is one of the most famous Chilean resort towns in the central zone of Chile. It is recurrently visited by surfers from all the world, because the Punta de Lobos beach is considered one of the best for surf practice worldwide.

Central Pichilemu was not severely damaged by the earthquake, but the tsunami caused significant destruction. The Fishermen Creek, located in front of the beach, was completely destroyed, and its machines are now unusable. Most of the Agustín Ross architecture that characterized the city, three of them being National Monuments of Chile, were damaged. The Agustín Ross Mirador, a famous location in front of the beach, located less than 200 meters from the Fisherman Creek, was completely destroyed. Its famous balustrades were washed away or thrown asunder. Many restaurants, kiosks and a circus were affected by the tsunami.

The rural parts of Pichilemu, like Ciruelos, Rodeillo and Espinillo feature houses constructed from adobe. Many were more than 100-years old, and were destroyed or are now uninhabitable.

The most powerful aftershock was produced almost 40 kilometers in front of the coast of Pichilemu, at the 03:10 local time (07:10 UTC) in March 2, with an intensity of 5.5 in the Richter scale, according to the USGS.

The Intendant of the O’Higgins Region, Juan Núñez, had a meeting with the Governor of the Cardenal Caro Province, Loreto Puebla, the Mayor of Pichilemu, Roberto Córdova, and naval and military authorities, juntas de vecinos representatives. They decided to leave the Carabineros police force to maintain the security of the city.

Your Master Bedroom Can Be The Relaxing Oasis You Desire ~ Even Without Spending A Ton Of Money

By Reba Collins

Everyone loves a beautiful relaxing bedroom. The bedroom is the one place where you can unwind and rejuvenate your body in preparation for your busy days.

Unfortunately, often the bedroom is one of the most neglected rooms of the house since its the place where quests dont go. Quite often, at the end of a busy, hectic, and sometimes very tiring day, we strip our clothes and just drop them to the floor or drape them over the back of a chair. Then, in our rush to start our day the next morning, they dont get picked-up and our bed doesnt get made. Fast-forward to the next night, repeat. It soon becomes chaos and we begin to not care, so the clothes dont get picked up until we do laundry at the end of the week.

A close companion to the mess described above is the clutter that seems to collect in the bedroom. Again, since the bedroom is usually hidden from guests, it also becomes a place where we put things you know, things we dont know what to do with. Soon the bedroom is filled with clutter and clutter collects more clutter and wellthats when we know its time to do something.

First things first, if you really want a relaxing, calming bedroom, a place where you can exhale the days stress, youre going to have to get rid of your clutter. Clutter makes the mind feel active and thats not very conducive to relaxation. First sort through everything, categorize what you want to keep, whats trash, and what you want to donate. Then put the things that will stay in the bedroom in pretty containers and pack the rest away in storage or put it in the room where it belongs. Ridding yourself of clutter and keeping your house clutter-free is like learning to live a new lifestyle, an organized lifestyle. Its hard work but well worth the effort.

One major thing that helps make a room relaxing is color on the walls. When walls are white, the light bounces around the room. Color will absorb some of the light, create a bit of drama, and make the room feel more relaxing. And since painting is an easy one-day job, and you can do it yourself, its the first thing you should consider when wanting to make a change.

When trying to pick relaxing colors, try to stay away from the red family. Red heightens the blood pressure and quickens the minds pace, not exactly what you want in the bedroom. Neutral colors like those in the beige family are good but with neutrals it will be important to add some color punch with accessories, window treatments and bedding. The other color family that is quite relaxing is blue. Colors that are toned with or mixed with blue also work well, like greens and bluish purples.

Next you need to consider your bedding. Bedding can be quite expensive but there are lots of choices that you can examine. Try finding something you like in one of the off-price retail stores like TJ Maxx or Marshalls. Or, if you already have a comforter but want something different, try covering the old comforter with a duvet cover. Duvet covers are made to cover plain white goose-down comforters but will work perfectly well with any comforter, even if its not goose-down. Duvet covers usually cost much less than buying a comforter. On the other hand, you might consider making an investment in a goose-down comforter as they last forever and you can change the look of your room easily and inexpensively by just changing the duvet cover.

Pillows on the bed are the perfect way to make your bedroom look like a relaxing place to be. Pillows can be expensive when purchased ready-made, but try making them yourself. Cloth table napkins and remnant fabric are great to use when making pillows and usually really inexpensive. You can buy old throw pillows from the thrift store or use your own old pillows as the filler, just be sure theyre clean before you use them in your new pillows. Voila, new throw pillows for a fraction of the cost.

When dressing your bed with pillows, use large pillows at the head and taper down to the smaller ones in the front. However, dont use too many, try not to take up more than one-third of the bed with pillows as it starts to look overdone and they are a pain to remove and replace each day.

Lastly, accessories and artwork will help the space feel relaxing. Candles are a beautiful way to accessorize and can add romance when the time is right. Pretty lamps can add ambiance with their soft light as well. And as far as artwork goes, creating your own will give the room the personal touch that only you can give. Consider using frames from old pieces of artwork that you can find at garage sales or thrift stores.

Creating that wonderfully relaxing bedroom does not need to cost a fortune. Just making a few inexpensive changes can make a huge difference. And remember, the entire room does not need to be redecorated all at one time. First make the changes in lifestyle that will help you keep the room clean and uncluttered. Once that step is in place, just take it one step at a time. Soon youll be retiring each night in your relaxing sanctuary and waking in a room that will brighten each day.
