India: Maharashtra plastic ban comes into force

Monday, June 25, 2018

On Saturday, the plastic ban in the Indian state of Maharashtra came into force. In an attempt to minimise pollution, the state government has introduced a ban on single-use plastics.

The leader of the Yuya Sena political party, Aaditya Thackeray, said on Twitter, “The ban on single use disposable plastic cups, plastic bags, plastic straws, plastic plates and cutlery, styrofoam cutlery and non woven bags”. He added, “these are global issues now and we have taken a step to combat it”.

Plastic pollution has led to the choking of drains, marine pollution and a risk of animals consuming plastics. This year, India’s motto for World Environment Day — June 5 — was “Beat Plastic Pollution”. People violating the plastic ban are to face a fine of 5,000 Indian Rupees (INR) for the first offence. For the second offence, the fine is INR 10,000 and the third time offence is INR 25,000 and a three-month prison term. Deputy municipal commissioner Nidhi Choudhary said, “To weed out corruption, we plan to give inspectors payment gadgets for electronic receipts of the fines”.

The Maharashtra government has given a 90-day period for manufacturers to dispose of existing polyethylene terephthalate (PET/PETE) plastic spoons and plates, while shopkeepers and citizens in general have six months to dispose of plastics. However, the ban does not prohibit plastic usage for wrapping medicines or milk cartons thicker than 50 microns.

The state government had announced the decision for the plastic ban on March 23. According to NDTV’s report, Maharashtra is the eighteenth Indian state to enforce a state-wide plastic ban. Aaditya Thackeray also said, “I congratulate the citizens for making this into a movement, even before the ban was enforceable, giving up single use disposable plastic.”

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/LA-ND

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

And above all coordinate color themes so the store and its contents showcase a cohesive look. This strategy will reward you in increased traffic and length of visits.

The human brain automatically responds to colors, therefore, the objective is to use color to influence the potential customer. Approximately 80 percent of information reaches our brains through our eyes. Most people are more comfortable when colors remind them of something familiar.

Here are some standard responses produced by a wide variety of colors for Americans; though it is important to remember that the triggers are different around the world. If you are marketing to other ethnicities more research is required.

White

White signifies pure, clean, youthful and mild. It provides a clean backdrop for the more important items names the items you are selling.

Black

Black can denote sophistication, elegance, mystery. It is seductive and commands attention in a more understated manner.

From young on we have grown up associating gold with value. This is exactly what is prompted when we see this rich color used in storefront decorating.

Silver

Silver also represents an elevated stature similar to gold. The cool sleek color sends signals of scientific formulation, high tech and high standards.

Red

Red creates excitement, displays strength and is used to express speed and danger. Red is the color that traditionally stands out in a crowd and causes most people to stop and take notice.

Blue

Blue is the color most often stated as a favorite color. It is refreshing and clean and cool. It reminds most of the outdoors, the sky and serenity.

Yellow

A majority of the population think of the sun and sunshine. It is a warm color that is always cheerful and happy. What could be better than pairing it with blue? Thoughts of vacation and beaches may transport visitors to another place.

Green

Green makes us think of trees and grass. Wonderful associations with nature and growth and abundance generally ensue. In addition the connection to money and prosperity elevate this color choice a step higher.

Purple

When most people see deep purple they think of musical favorites or images of royalty, spirituality and dignity. It is a strong and majestic color making everyone feel grand.

Pink

Usually associated with femininity, it connotes soft, sweet and happy thoughts. It takes most back to the more indulgent side of life even though adult responsibilities many times have jaded views of reality.

Though nothing is an absolute you will wield more retail sales power when you incorporate the maximum amount of information into the planning stages. A problem many retailers face is the expense of changing a color scheme especially if the walls are covered in slatwall panels for display. Jiframs plastic slatwall covers can inexpensively cover your existing slatwall with a new color, pictures or logos of your choice for a nominal cost.

Go ahead plan the display you have always wanted knowing you can change it more frequently without breaking the bank. Ensure you get noticed with an unlimited array of colors. Slatwall covers can be matched to your design specifications.

Farming And Ranching In Colorado

byadmin

Colorado, known as the Centennial State became part of the Union in 1876. It boasts of being the 8th largest state geographically and has the largest peak in the Rocky Mountains. Yet, where Colorado also excels is in its production of food. In farming and ranching, the state remains a steady producer. Unfortunately, drought and hard times may result in farms and ranches for sale. In Colorado, however, farmers and ranchers are still striving to do what they do best for less than they deserve – keep Colorado and its residents, as well as those from other states, fed.

Size

In 2012, Colorado had 36,300 ranches and farms. The average size of these was 862 Acres. Some of them are the property of independent farmers who have held the land in their families for acres and John Malone.

Farms and Crops

What you grow is determined by the location of the farm. If you are located in the east and east-central plains, the farm most likely produces beans, grains, sugar beets and potatoes. Other crops include:

  • Grains e.g. wheat, barley, proso millet corn hay, sorghum – Arkansas Valley and Western Slope
  • Peaches – Arkansas Valley
  • Various fruits e.g. tart cherries, apples- Western Slope

In addition to these, Colorado grows roses and a variety of vegetables for markets. Consistently, Colorado ranks high compared to other states as a producer.

Ranches

While Colorado has a history of farms, it is better known for its ranches. When it comes to cattle, this state has the seventh-largest cattle herd in the United States. In fact, the ranching industry accounts for around 50 percent of Colorado’s total agricultural sales.

Ranches for Sale in Colorado

Ranches for sale in Colorado are a sign of the times. While many farmers and ranchers continue to tough it out in hard times, many cannot succeed in this rough business. While some may turn their place into a working Dude Ranch, others decide it is time to leave. This can provide you with the chance to see if you have what it takes to be a successful Colorado farmer or rancher.

Explosion, steam eruption near Grand Central Terminal in New York City

Wednesday, July 18, 2007

A pipe has burst in New York City, the largest city in the United States, causing a generator to explode. The explosion occurred in Midtown Manhattan near Grand Central Terminal (GCT) and the Chrysler Building, and approximately at the intersection of 41st Street and Lexington Avenue. Nearby buildings have been evacuated, and a large area has been blocked off. There are reports of a very large crater at the scene.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) has officially ruled out terrorism. Grand Central Station was quickly evacuated soon after the incident. Subway lines 4, 5 and 6 have no service in both directions between the 125th Street Station and the Bowling Green Station. 42nd Street Shuttle service has been shut completely.

The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) received a call at 5:56 p.m. EDT (UTC-4) reporting an explosion. More than 170 firefighters were dispatched to the scene. Witnesses reported that buildings in the nearby area shook. This was a five-alarm response.

At least 20 people have been reported injured, and one woman, Lois Baumerich, died from a heart attack. Two people are currently in critical condition.

There are potentially harmful materials at the scene of the explosion and HAZMAT crews are on the scene to clean up debris. There are reports that pipes were wrapped in asbestos, but the air is being tested, and results should be available late Wednesday night.

ConEdison Workers are on the scene as well, and it appears that they are working nearby.

Emergency workers are reporting that the situation is not under control. They are still unable to confirm why the pipe exploded due to the inaccessible nature of the scene at the source of the explosion. The pressure of steam has subsided and the air appears to have cleared, revealing the crater. Disruption of electricity in the surrounding area is minimal.

GCT is reported to be reopened at this time. An area was cordoned off and people trapped in the vicinity due to fears of asbestos pollution resulting from the explosion.

According to a press conference with the mayor, the pipe involved was built in 1924, and a likely cause of the eruption and explosion was cold water leaking into the pipe, possibly from rain or from a water pipe. A tow truck had fallen into the crater left by the explosion, and the explosion also shattered glass on nearby buildings.

Designing Bespoke Kitchens

Designing Bespoke Kitchens

by

Carina Evison

There are as many layouts for kitchens as there are clients who ask for them; any one kitchen could be designed in a multitude of different ways. Whether it is a contemporary kitchen, a hand painted traditional kitchen, a simple shaker kitchen or an ornate country house kitchen, each design has to complement the location, the individual and the life they lead.

Plain English has designed bespoke handmade kitchens for every type of property; from town houses to country estates, from Huff houses in the Lake District to beach huts on the East Anglian coast. Our designs vary considerably, so establishing a client s requirements and wish list early on is paramount.

For families with young children, simple shaker style kitchens with minimal detailing on the doors tend to be favoured to allow for easy cleaning and kitchen islands with stools are often appreciated, to give children somewhere to sit and eat snacks or do their school work. Granite has always been the worktop material of choice for families given its practicality and easiness to clean, however with recent advances in sealant technology, beautiful stone such as York or Belgian Fossil can now be equally considered. Beautiful yet hardwearing worktops like these will prevent any staining or marking from accidental spills or children s baking sessions.

For those who like to entertain, the use of space and the practicality of the design have to blend seamlessly with the aesthetic element of the kitchen. Frequent entertaining needs lots of workspace and storage, as well as extra appliances, so housing them can be a challenge. In a large space, appliances can be integrated behind beautifully detailed cupboards, maintaining the look and feel of a room , rather than that of an industrial kitchen. For a country look, Plain English makes freestanding work tables with slatted bases which are ideal for extra storage and additional preparation areas.

If space is restricted, there are always storage solutions to help increase the useable areas you have. At Plain English, we have designed a Clever Corner cupboard that has curved wooden shelves on the door and sliding trays inside, which give access to the deep recesses at the back of the cupboard. From a design perspective, in a smaller room it s better to keep door detailing, for example mouldings and beadings, to a minimum so as not to over-clutter the space and detract from the kitchen itself; simpler is often better and a simple design will defy passing trends.

Whatever the design and layout you choose, you will only really get out of your kitchen what you invest in it. Quality craftsmanship should be the first concern and at Plain English we are wary of kitchen manufacturers that supply drawers with separate fascias screwed onto the main box; every Plain English kitchen has solid wood drawers that have the front panel fully integrated using traditional dovetail joints.

Bespoke kitchens should last a lifetime and if the design is kept simple and quality materials and joinery techniques are used to make it, there should be no reason to warrant buying a new one. And if you ever fancy a change, a new colour palette and handles will give your kitchen a spruce up, without it costing the earth.

Carina Evison is the author of this article. Carina works for Plain English, a traditional joinery company that specialises in the design of

bespoke kitchens

, ranging from country house kitchens and shaker style kitchens to

contemporary kitchens

. Using the time-honoured Georgian techniques of furniture making, their designs are simple and long-lasting, with cupboards handmade and hand-painted in Suf

Woman strikes lucky betting on Champions League football

Monday, September 24, 2007

A woman found herself £226,000 richer, one the biggest ever payouts to a female client, after placing a series of bets on last weeks Champions League games, despite knowing nothing about football.

Kathrin Rotmann, 33, placed a £1,000 bet based on her tactics of supporting “teams that are strong and winning”.

“I am delighted. I only ever bet on football — last year I won £35,000 with one bet. I just keep a track of those teams which are playing well and bet on them. It was very exciting when the results went my way.”

She was delighted when she saw her bet multiply in front of her eyes, when her 226-1 odds of wins for Arsenal, Man United, Rangers, Slavia Prague, Barcelona, Roma, Fenerbahce and PSV come in on television.

The exact amount won was £226,834.36.
