French workers use threats in compensation demand

Friday, July 17, 2009Following similar threats by workers at New Fabris and Nortel, workers at JLG in Tonneins, France, threatened to blow up several platform cranes. The JLG factory announced in April 2009 that it will fire 53 of its 163 workers by the end of 2009, while the remaining 110 jobs will not be secure over the next 2 years.

JLG Tonneins was acquired in 2006 with its parent JLG Industries, a maker of aerial work platforms, by the U.S.-based Oshkosh Corporation. Despite being hugely profitable in the past, production has been much reduced since 2008 with the contraction of the construction industry and lower demand for its products. Despite excellent past results the new American management demanded sweeping cuts at the company.

In the view of locals, “the company’s actions are a disgrace given the expensive perks, such as official cars, for its corporate fat cats, compared to the sacrifice, silence, and dignity demanded by the company of those it has made redundant.”

The management offered severance pay of 3,000 (US $4,200), however the workers demanded a severance package commensurate with “the wealth that their labor has generated.” Worker’s delegates requested a “supra-legal” payment of € 30,000, on Thursday 16 of July the management responded with a counter offer of € 16,000. On Thursday night the worker’s actions secured the € 30,000 settlement initially demanded.

On The Job Accidents Usually Require Workers Comp In Hawaii

byAlma Abell

Accidents happen in all walks of life and personal injuries can occur in practically every field of employment. There are numerous reasons why an accident or injury has such a high probability in the workplace, but the most common is probably simple laziness. People only want to exert the least amount of effort on the minimum amount of work required to get their paycheck. True, this may not apply to everyone, but it does apply to a great many workers as anyone in a management position can attest to. Because of this slack work ethic people leave tools, parts and miscellaneous debris scattered around where someone could have a trip and fall injury resulting in a Workers comp in Hawaii claim.

Of course, slipping, tripping and falling is only one category of job related accidents for which employees may require Workers comp in Hawaii. There are times when people become too involved in their current tasks and get stuck in what is known as tunnel vision. This is where the person is so absorbed in whatever they are doing that they exclude everything and everyone else around them. You may have seen a small example of this in high school or college when a student is so focused on their studies or so busy reading a book that they bump into people in the hallways.

Because there is no way to predict an accident there is no way to protect yourself or your employees from the pain and suffering which is the likely outcome of one. However, if you do end up suffering from a job related injury or illness and are covered by a Workers comp in Hawaii claim then you want to find the most reliable and speediest recovery means available. Thankfully, excellent doctors run well qualified clinics and rehabilitation services like Portner Orthopedic Rehabilitation to ensure you get the treatments you need to recover properly and in the least amount of time. Just as importantly, these places specialize in long term treatment and care for those terrible accidents which the patient may never be able to fully recover from. Sometimes, the treatments for these are the same as any other injury, but there are times when severe disabilities require special treatments.

European airspace closed by volcanic ash

Thursday, April 15, 2010

Hundreds of thousands of air travelers had their travel plans disrupted in Europe by volcanic ash from the Eyjafjallajökull eruption.

Tens of thousands of air travelers were stranded when all flights into and out of the United Kingdom were grounded, as it became one of the first nations to be affected. The grounding was even more extensive than that following the September 11 attacks of 2001 when only trans-Atlantic flights were canceled.

Eurocontrol released a statement saying “…most air traffic in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden is suspended.”

The grounding is because the volcanic ash drawn into the jet stream is of a particle size which allows it to remain aloft in the atmosphere. Ingestion of this foreign matter, because of its distribution, would lead to flame outs in all aircraft engines. The composition of the ash also means that it would first melt into glass if it were to enter the engine of an aircraft before solidifying again as it cooled. This could lead to damage to the compressors and fan blades, which would make it impossible to restart the engines, even if the aircraft were to exit the cloud.

The current contingency is informed by the experience of British Airways Flight 9, which on June 24, 1982 suffered just such complete engine flame outs when it flew through the plume of Mount Galunggung in Indonesia. In that case, the flight crew after many efforts was able to restart the engines, though one failed shortly after, and the aircraft landed without casualties.

The UK National Air Traffic Services (NATS) has stated that “restrictions will remain in place in UK controlled airspace until 1300 (UK time) tomorrow, Friday 16 April, at the earliest,” and that “We will review further Met Office information and at 0230 (UK time) tomorrow we will advise the arrangements that will be in place through to 1800 (UK time) tomorrow.” The NATS statement concluded “…the situation cannot be said to be improving”.

In addition to Northern Europe, the ash is drifting south; Berlin and Hamburg airports in Germany are closed, and airports in the Netherlands, Belgium and Northern France are described as now being closed or closing. Some flights from Spain and Portugal, together with upwards of 4,000 flights across Northern Europe, have been affected, and the knock-on effect of aircraft and crews out of position could disrupt air travel worldwide for up to 72 hours.

One affected group are British musicians booked to play at this weekend’s Coachella Festival in California. Amongst those stranded are Frightened Rabbit, Gary Numan, The Cribs and Bad Lieutenant.

Hundreds of thousands rally in Australia against IR legislation

Tuesday, November 15, 2005

People rallied in 300 locations across Australia today to protest the Federal Government’s proposed changes to industrial relations laws, WorkChoices. According to police, around 150,000 people congregated in Melbourne, from where speeches were broadcast throughout the country. In Sydney, thirty thousand gathered in Belmore Park and Martin Place to watch the broadcast before marching to Chifley Square.

Sharan Burrow, President of the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU), said that under the changes many working conditions would be under threat, including “penalty rates, public holidays, overtime pay, control over rostered hours, shift penalties, even 4 weeks annual leave.” The government has claimed, despite various expert assesment to the contrary, and opposition from major Australian religious and charity organisations and some concern from its own backbench, that the IR changes will improve the economy and ultimately benefit workers, and dismissed the protests as having “little effect”.

Florida man charged with stealing Wi-Fi

Update since publication

This article mentions that Wi-Fi stands for “Wireless Fidelity”, although this is disputed.

Thursday, July 7, 2005

A Florida man is being charged with 3rd degree felony for logging into a private Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) Internet access point without permission. Benjamin Smith III, 41, is set for a pre-trial hearing this month in the first case of its kind in the United States.

This kind of activity occurs frequently, but often goes undetected by the owners of these wireless access points (WAPs). Unauthorized users range from casual Web browsers, to users sending e-mails, to users involved in pornography or even illegal endeavours.

According to Richard Dinon, owner of the WAP Smith allegedly broke into, Smith was using a laptop in an automobile while parked outside Dinon’s residence.

There are many steps an owner of one of these access points can take to secure them from outside users. Dinon reportedly knew how to take these steps, but had not bothered because his “neighbors are older.”

Benefits Of Installation And Siding Repair In Charles Mo

byadmin

Whether someone is building a home or they simply want to give their current home a new look, investing in top-quality siding is important. Companies that do installation and siding repair in Charles MO know there are a variety of options available, but none match the durability of vinyl siding. Today’s contractors are here to point out some of the benefits of residential vinyl siding. For those considering the investment, below are some of the reasons why vinyl siding comes so highly recommended by contractors and homeowners alike.

Cost Savings

If a person is concerned about their budget, vinyl siding can be more cost-efficient than fiber cement or natural wood siding. In most cases, vinyl siding is about half the cost of other materials. Furthermore, because it’s easier to install, the customer spends less on labor during the process of installation.

Durability

One of the main benefits of vinyl siding is that it is much more durable than other siding options. Unlike wood siding, which can gradually rot, vinyl siding is not affected by water and it is made to stand up to the elements. Most vinyl siding offered by local contractors comes with an extensive warranty for additional peace of mind.

Energy Efficiency

Many of today’s homeowners are concerned about the home’s overall energy usage. Investing in insulated siding can provide the owner with hundreds of dollars in energy savings each year. Certain kinds of energy-efficient vinyl siding may also make a homeowner eligible for rebates and discounts as well.

Low Maintenance

Some homeowners prefer to invest in vinyl siding because of its easy care and low maintenance. It is highly pest resistant, and it does not rot, crumble or fade with time. The only maintenance it generally needs is the occasional treatment with a pressure washer.
